Two factions uncapitalized since I am talking about the Kurzick and Luxon factions, rather than the game "Factions."
So I've posted a few posts around here about me coming back to GW and so far the whole faction/alliance system has completely flown over my head and no one in game has been able to explain it to me in a way to get me to understand it.
Now from what I have figured out is that the faction allegiances are account based. I have a slight preference towards Kurzick in that I like the armor rewards better and think their areas are more pleasing to the eye. But for my necromancer, with the exception of elite cabal, the elite Luxon is my favorite female necro armor. I would also like to experience both factions' campaign missions.
So that said: Right now I am mostly Luxon. Have the title Luxon Supporter. So my first real specific questions are:
1. Can I switch factions?
2. If so, how do I switch factions?
3. How do guilds and alliances affect my factions? If I am say Luxon, I cannot join a Kurzick aligned guild?
4. Faction is earned by quests and pvp yes?
5. What do 'Raising Kurzick/Luxon' cap do? What does increasing your Alliance's rep do?
Some Questions on How the two factions Work

You are not actually allied to one faction or the other - you can do each factions quests, visit each factions outposts etc, however you like. If you say "I am Luxon!" The only thing stopping you joining a Kurzick guild is your own decisions. If your guild is allied Kurzick, you can still PvP for the Luxons etc, the only thing you can't do is donate Luxon faction to your guild. Nowhere in the game do you choose one side or the other - even in the primary missions you can go back and complete each side's missions. Yes, faction is gained by quests & PvP. Raising the "cap" means you can store more faction - when you reach the cap, you must spend faction gained, as you cannot gain/store any more - on skills, scrolls, materials, or donate it to your Alliance - all of these add points to a title track for allegiance to each side; http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Allegiance_rank

2 well, it depends on how you look at it. The way NPCs look at it is that you're alligned to the faction which you have the most raw faction points for atm (aka the points which you still can buy amber chunks etc from). So if you're luxon atm just do some kurz stuff and voila.
3 Uh, I don't remember... It's more complicated to be a lux in a kruz guild, because you can't contribute lux faction to a kurz guild, but nothing stops you from doing lux content.
4 You can also gain a boon from the priests standing at the res shrines in the kurz/lux areas of Factions. There's a complete list on the wiki: http://www.guildwiki.org/Faction_%28Luxon%29
5 Raising your cap means that you can have more points at a given time. Say you have 10000/25000 luxon faction, then you win a battle in the jade quarry for the first time and your faction cap is raised by 5000. It should look like this (ignoring that you actually get factions by winning JQ) 10000/30000
Increasing alliance rep is just what it says. If your alliance is really really devoted to farming faction you can hold your own town.
I think you can get most answers to your questions from the wiki, follow the link I posted earlier.

Here's the simple explanation: Kurzick and Luxon factions are both a number. You start with zero, you get points by doing stuff that is specific to one or the other. If at any point you have more of one than the other, it is called being "aligned" to that faction.
In the game there's Kurzon NPCs and Luxon NPCs (and cities etc.) Whenever you're aligned to one faction, only NPCs of the same faction will allow you to use their services. This makes the most difference with armor crafters (want Luxon armor? gotta make the Luxon crafter accept you).
Pretty much the same applies to donating faction to a guild you're in -- you can only do it when your higher faction is the same faction as the guild's.
Other than this, faction doesn't mean anything, technically speaking. Both sides offer comparable quests, NPCs, zones etc.
PS: Oh and one more note: whenever you spend one faction for whatever reason, both faction numbers decrease by the same amount. This is so your alignment doesn't change by spending, only by earning.
PPS: Please let me know if I said anything stupid, I'm not really much into Factions and I may very well be wrong.
