I think it doesn't have to be that excessive, maybe just 1 or 2 days more so people who are busy on weekends have a chance to play too : )

Hm... I see weekend events as something meant to give people that can't play during the week a boost to their points, weeks have (usually) 5 working days and a 2-day weekend.
Meaning that if you play only 1 hour every day during the weekends, you'll get over 4 times the progress someone that plays only 1 hour each day during weekends gets.
By adding 'double progress' weekends, you can compensate that.
If you can play during the weekends, but not on work days, you have these 'boosts'.
If you can't play during the week, but not on weekends, you don't need the boost, all you have to do is play every day a little. Since boosts are usually 'double' things
If you can play everyday, you are a lucky bastard. You have both the work days and the weekend boosts. You need nothing.
And if you can only play a couple of days during the week, but none at all the weekends, you may need the boost, but you are most probably a minority, and schedules can't be made for everyone.
