[UBUNTU] Guild Wars black player models?
BettaDenU
Hey guys, I got really sick of Windows so I installed Ubuntu, so far I love it except it's not gaming friendly which is why i'm posting.

How do I fix this? I get black player models all the time, yet the game runs reasonable.

Do you have the video drivers up to date? After installation you should have been prompted to do a full system update to the latest packages. After you do that, run System / Administraton / Hardware Drivers and select the most current version.
What video card do you have? I'm afraid ATI have become notorious over the years for their quirky drivers.

Guild Wars and Ubuntu don't like eachother one bit. I'm willing to bet that, even if you fix this blackness issue, another problem will arise.
GW likes to periodically crash in Ubunti, also.

Hey, great that you've got it running under ubuntu! (Offtopic) Does fullscreen also work? I myself have never tried installing it under ubuntu but I will defenitely give it a try after this. To all that haven't tried ubuntu, please do, it's fantastic.

Hey, thanks for the replies.
I'm running UBUNTU 10.10 and i've got ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4500 Series graphic card with most recent driver.
Any suggestions?
Yes fullscreen works, but I don't like playing games fullscreen so hence my windowed mode.
Linux to me is the best OS out there, EXCEPT for gaming, which is a big loss. looking for second laptop or an XBOX360 to use that for gaming and this one for everything else.

ATI are mostly designed for FPS games, where Nvidia are designed for the MMO TP type games. Never used Ubuntu, so no idea about that.
Have you tried reinstalling or running the -image command? Could be caused by a corrupt data file.

Works fine here, fullscreen and everything, and it's nice because you have multiple workspaces and GW is only on one, so you can basically switch to a browser or whatever without having to minimize etc.
Try the workarounds from the wiki and hope for the best. Myself, I've given up trying to cope with ATI drivers and went NVidia. But if it's a laptop that's obviously not an option.

Yeah i've got a laptop, so you recommend giving up Ubuntu and go back to that retard OS that goes by the name Windows 7?
Can I also ask Urc how you got GW to work properly?

You could consider setting up a dual-boot system with Windows and Linux.

I have an Nvidia card (7300 GT) and other than that I didn't have to do anything. Simply runs with the default Wine settings. :/ That's why I suspect it's the ATI drivers more than anything.

I got Guild Wars to run on Mac OS X perfectly only once.. but it never worked right again. Basically the same as linux, unix. Was using wine.

I guess when I buy a new laptop I should make sure it has an nVidia graphic card in it.
Cannot stress this enough that I absolutly hate Windows and everything about it, yet i'm forced to use it if I want to play my games
.
Also dual booting isn't an option, I like to do multiple things at the same time, like Gaming, IM, Video's, Homework.
I guess I can only hope someday Linux will be more gaming friendly.
Unless someone can get Guild Wars (and Guild Wars 2) to work on an XBOX 360. Then i'll totally give up PC's forever lol

I hate people that steal my stuff but I don't need therapy for that, I just hate how Windows runs. I prefer Linux over anything
.
A pink unicorn would be slightly gay but awesome nonetheless

Well, frankly, I can understand someone preferring one OS over another, but to actually "hate" Windows is a bit overboard. It's therapy time.

I can relate to Tjal's situation. I use Linux for everything and a Windows desktop just doesn't cut it. And I find dual-booting a big chore as well. I can tell you right now, if GW2 won't run under Wine I'm gonna have a problem.

I don't know if I can help you (because my husband is the one who figured it out for me) but i play GW on UBUNTU 10.10. It took a lot of tweeking and i had to change my network card and graphics card.
At one point we were also getting the black faces but my DH worked it out (I think after we changed the graphics card). You can look on the Ubuntu forums for help.

Slackware, here, and don't have any problems, but I've got an NVIDIA card. I'm guessing it's the ATI drivers.
