New Here.. I have a couple questions. Please assist.

Hello! First off, I started the free trial the other day and I am looking forward to the Guild Wars 2 release as many of you are I bet. I have no clue what I am doing ingame atm but I have no doubt I'll get it as I go.
I have been very tempted to purchase this game in anticipation of part 2 and I very well may do it. I would like to know what benefits there are from being a current Guild Wars character and then going to Guild Wars 2. Can I start leveling in this Guild Wars and get credited my earned levels in Guild Wars 2? Or is it a complete wipe? Is there anything else that might provide me with some insight? I don't like being the new person but I think it will be fun to start over. My current game has announced its shutdown in December so I am trying to find a new home, I keep leaning in this direction and will probably play more on my trial account tonight.
Thanks for any helpful information you give me.

The second game takes place 250 years after the end of the first one. So no you won't be able to play the same character since he will be long dead.
You will on the other hand get loads of info on the lore and story of the world, and will be able to gain access to certain special stuff via the Hall of Monuments in Eye of the North

Yes, playing and getting achievements does help toward your Guild Wars 2 account.
As how to start off, I suggest you just play through the game to get the feel for it first, then go back and start grabbing achievements.

Going through the storyline in preparation for Guild Wars 2 which takes place so much later seems to be a MUST. I'd hate to not know what was going on.. I hadn't thought about that.
My wife will be joining me in this game provided we both choose it.. Im leaning on it heavily and I believe she is gaining enough interest to start playing.. The quest line.. is it something people have to do solo? We would like to play side by side as much as possible. Since I know nothing about how the game works, please shed some light on what we can do as a duo and what we can't do, if you don't mind.
Do players have homes in the game? Please explain..

Players do not have homes in the game as such suppose I give you a rough game description and you ask more questions as the need arises.
Its called guild wars because players join guilds created by other players "or create their own" you can have a guild hall to meet up and plan game sessions but it isn't a place the characters sleep or store things.
There is a storage system and whatever you put in that storage is available to all of your other characters on the same game account.
Players usually meet up in the towns and cities in the game some of these cities due to location and convenience have become trading centers so more people tend to gather there.
Outside of the cities you are all alone in the game just you and the party you have formed.
This party ranges in size from 2 to 8 and is made up of any players such as you and your Wife.
Plus any AI help made up initially of henchmen found in the cities and later by heroes "which can be equipped with weapons and skills of your choice"
That is pretty much how the PVE "player vs environment" part of the game works.
There is also PVP player vs player where you fight arena style against others.
GW2 no one is sure when GW2 is coming I recon November at the earliest but it could be next summer or later we simply do not know.
The addon to the GW game is called eye of the north in that game is a hall of monuments gaining certain achievements in the game or gaining certain special weapons armour animal companions etc gain you points in the hom these give you some rewards in GW2.
The rewards are cosmetic ie armour weapons etc not otherwise available but in no way better than you will get by playing gw2.
Hope I haven't confused you more

My hubby and I played through all of GW together, usually just the 2 of us and henchmen or heroes. The great thing about GW is that you don't need to join a guild when there are 2 of you to do all the hard stuff.
It sounds like you are coming from SWG? If so, one of the big differences is the instanced areas. You will be all by your lonesomes when you go out to play and I personally enjoyed that very much.
The trilogy is pretty cheap now and more than worth it.

If you and wife are playing together, yes it is possible to "solo" the entire game. By solo I mean you and wife and balance of party filled with heroes and/or henchmen. Hench-persons ... your wife should like this game. Lot of the hench and heroes are women.
Best place to start, IMHO, would be Nightfall to get heroes right away. For the lore and the story best place to start is Prophecies. Your character can eventually move between all 3 chapters and Eye of the North.
http://www.guildwiki.org/Main_Page great information source on the game.
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page and the official wiki too!
http://www.gwpvx.com/Main_Page great place to get ideas on character builds.
Vast game, 3 chapters plus Eye of the North. GW got started off as a splitoff from WoW during WoW's development days. So there are similarities, but also huge differences. No monthly fee for GW is very nice difference! Buy the game and the rest is all free.
The story and lore of GW is different from WoW's, but in its own way deeper and more complex. And more consistent. At least today ... after Cataclysm ... sheesh! The game is also a bit more geek than WoW; there are a lot of skills in GW. But like any game you pick it all up one bit at a time and the learning curve is gentle most of the way.
Guilds? Join one, or don't. Up to you. You do not really need a guild if you know about the wikis linked above. A good guild is a great thing. A bad guild is a horrid experience.
What else? Remember that the "s" key will make you back up. Get a longbow or flatbow for pulling and keep it in weapons slot 4.
Welcome to GW! Have fun!

Yes, I play through this game with my spouse also, it is great to have a partner to go through the game with. The skill unlock packs make everything much easier, but if this is purely entertainment until gw2, then maybe you don't want to spend extra money on those. As said there are benefits from gw1 to gw2, depending on time spent playing per day you may be able to get the 30 points neccessary for all item rewards in the next installation.

Press F10 ingame and you get access to information about all your current quests.
There is also a search box with direct access to wiki.

As for playing together, yeah, almost all of the storyline is played in a group.
No homes but if you're in a guild, your guild can get a guild hall where you can meet up, otherwise it's pretty easy to find people since you won't have to transfer around servers and stuff, just remember that some of the busier towns have multiple districts (top left corner of your screen) so you'll have to keep that in mind when trying to find someone in, say, Kamadan.
In order for your achievements to matter in GW2, you do have to get the Eye of the North expansion so you have access to your Hall of Monuments. And here is the link to the Hall of Monuments reward calculator so you can view your progress.
And soz about Star Wars Galaxies getting moved along to make room for The Old Republic. But welcome to GW, I know I love it.

On topic: you should be aware that GW1, GW2 and SWG are three very different games in how they build their world and relate players to it. GW1 is completely instanced and story-oriented, GW2 is split between a persistent world with ongoing world story and instanced personal story, while SWG (to the best of my second-hand knowledge, forgive me if I'm wrong) is world simulation, where story content comes from player-to-player interactions.

If you are heavily into lore you might want to play all of GW1 in preparation for GW2, but then again, you could simply read it all rather than play.
Basically, playing GW1 has no real benefit toward GW2, if you've played any other MMORPG. If you play lots and lots of GW1 and put stuff in your hall of Monuments, you can get a few trinkets in GW2, which will basically only say "I played GW1". It's not worth playing GW1 for anything you may get in GW2.
However it is worth it to play GW1 for the fun of playing GW1.

I should mention that GW2 will be quite different from GW, so do not expect anything other than lore to transfer over. They're for most intents and purposes completely different games. Play them as such.
The Hall of Monuments rewards you get in GW for GW2 are purely cosmetic. They will not offer any advantage, of any kind. Do not stress over them. They were meant for people who played GW over and over for the last 6 years and are stir crazy by now.
You can play with your wife for the entire game and is the best way to play.
GW will be a pleasant surprise for you, I think. In addition to the privacy and relaxation of the instanced areas, it lends itself to quite a bit of strategic planning, and is not requiring absolutely any grind. That's right, you can get everything you need (money, max items, max armor) just by playing the game normally. Add to this that you can change absolutely anything about your character (only the primary profession and the range of primary-specific armors are fixed); you can change name, looks, gender, secondary profession, freely change skills and attribute points, items etc.
Another interesting difference from classic MMORPGs is the leveling system. In GW the 20 levels only offer a boost in base HP and a number of attribute points (up to 170). Getting max level 20 is widely considered just the end of the character's training and where the real game begins, not an end-game purpose.
If you get just one campaign, for starters, get Prophecies. See how you both like it, and then you can move on to Factions, Nightfall and Eye of the North. Story-wise they're best done in this order.
You can get all the campaigns at once (it comes out cheaper) and travel between the continents fairly easy. But please be warned that doing so is a major trap that can undermine your enjoyment of the game. All campaigns add specific perks and it's very easy to give in to temptation and get those perks, which will be overpowered for the earlier campaigns.
wilebill's recommendation (get Nightfall, get heroes, beat all content easily) is such a temptation. You can do that... and you can also get heroes and overpowered skills from Nightfall and EotN. But Prophecies and Factions will become a joke if you do that, because they were designed to be played without heroes, without getting max armor early, and with only certain skills.
My advice is to try to complete each campaign in order, using characters created new specifically for the campaign, using only what that campaign has to offer. It's the best way to enjoy everything to the max.
But ultimately it's your choice and we can only offer advice. Play the game any way you see fit.

What it comes down to is by all means buy GW as it is a very good game but be aware that due to it being quite an old game many players have moved on.
There will be times when you will be playing with just the two of you and some AI help not that this is a major problem.
Some people prefer playing this way.
To gain anything towards GW2 you will have to own any one game plus eye of the north.
Once you have created a character you can check out the hall of monuments calculator and see what rewards your likely to get.
It will involve a fair bit of play but you will be able to keep adding points after gw2 comes out.
As long as your having fun nothing else matters.
