I REALLY want to like this game please help
kerbion
I come from WoW, and Rift and bought this game at release and recently bought all of the expacs. I really like the premise, but the low levels, and the henchmen kill it for me...
Coming from this background (which I am getting tired of) what class should I play? In WoW, I played a Hunter for a year, a Shaman for 3, and a rogue for 1, my Shaman was obviously my favorite character, and in Rift I play a Cleric tank.
Any tips for a newcomer who really wants to have a good time?
Or should I just move along? ;-)
Thanks all!

For best experience, I recommend Assassin or Ritualist. Either will work great playing solo or getting into groups of human players if you have the right builds.

I think you would enjoy playing Warrior, Ranger or Elementalist.
If you don't like henchmen and heroes you should try to find a guild with people that are willing to help out.
Good luck!

Ok - first forget anything you knew from those other games , it doesnt apply to gw.
Guildwars does take a short while to learn and is always a constant learning game - when anet does skill updates ( buff/nerf ) the skills also apply to foes which can mean having to learn new ways of things - many can recall the old derv foes and how easy they could be to kill and now its a tad harder.
Now you have several chr slots and you can try a few different professions and make your own choice - asking players will get all 10 professions being said as good , end of the day its your own choice.
Next find a guild thats both patient and helpful with new players and have no requirements - a guild can offer advice and insight into many aspects of the game as well as build suggestions for you and your heros.
Dont rush a campaign - its there to be enjoyed the first few times and you will learn a lot - a player who rushes the whole game first time wont know as much as you will .
You will find as you progess the henchmen in outposts will also start to be higher level - i believe anet designed it so you and hench will be same level for fairness and ease.

Forget about the levels, that's not what this game is about. Getting to level 20 is basically the tutorial bit. The main part (and the best parts) of the game starts at level 20.

Level doesn't matter, everyone has 20lvl. Weapons and armors don't matter too. Everyone has perfect ones. But there are some cool designs, that are not easy to get.
What really matters are skills, your build and weapon mods.
But most of all, how can you use them.
Because you have all campaigns bought, start in NightFall or Factions.
NightFall is easier than other campaigns and you get heroes.
Factions is very quick and if you sail to NF after getting to Kaineing city or go to Eye of the North, you'll get heroes and opportunity to lvl up.
Prophecies is very slow and long and boring, without heroes and attributes quests are available almost at the end of the campaign, but it's the 1st GW campaign and you should know what is Pre-Searing.
Every campaign is avalable to every toon after you reach the port town.

Visit Wiki at http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page Bookmark it and refer to it often. In particular, this may interest you: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guide...acter_creation
Short version of the above: If you want to start very slow, start in Prophecies. This can get boring, though, and hench-only play can get tedious. If you want super-fast start, go Factions. If you want polished game and heroes (I'd recommend this, if you're annoyed by henches), go Nightfall.
Don't buy runs, that really spoils the storyline. In general, try to play through each storyline at least once.
Yes, characters can travel between campaigns.
The only irreversible decision is your class (although name, gender and looks can only be changed with real money, so you should stop and think about those). So experiment.
America/English districts are the most populous.
The game is vastly more fun in a guild (look for a casual/newbie friendly one).
1-20 leveling is only a few hours, except in Prophecies. In either case, the 'endgame' is most of the game.
If you're interested in PvP, roll a PvP-only character and try it. I'd recommend Alliance Battles for starters, but you need a guild for that. Random Arenas can be fun but require patience, frustration resistance and thick skin. Also, press 'B' in game for observer mode to see what high-end PvP is like.
Also, for more help, as more specific questions.

As much grumbling that goes on these forums, we're always glad to see new people joining the game and especially people who want to learn how to play the game right.
GW is very cerebral in the planning as you only have 8 skills and build management is the most important skillset to have. You can check out www.gwpvx.com for build ideas and get a feel for how each profession plays, though at the end of the day you should use skills that best suit your own style.

Atm I play WoW & GW and obviously the difference between community behavior is tremendous, whereas WoW community sucks ass 90% of the people are trolls or ass holes most people on this forum will be happy to answer any question you may have so don't be afraid of getting bashed on. umm I've played rogue dk and mage never a shaman but I agree they would correspond roughly with ranger (hunter) assassin (rogue) and shaman (ritualist) they will be much different gameplay compared to those classes in wow I emphasize they're 'roughly' similar. Have fun in GW, don't let the learning curve scare you away.. that's what most people seem to do. Oh and join a helpful guild as soon as possible so you can find people to run missions and pvp with, we have a subforum for that. here you are http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/g...ment-f265.html

Just a thought here some of the games have a faster character progression than others.
Prophesies is quite slow Factions a fair bit faster and Nightfall very fast.
If you consider yourself fairly experienced in this type of game though not gw itself perhaps you should start a character in Nightfall.
Advantages are you will get to lvl 20 quickly have access to heroes and there are probably more people to play the game with.
Of course the disadvantage is its a harder learning curve and you will be short on decent skills to equip your heroes.
Since you have a number of character slots it might be worth experimenting with characters in each game and see what works for you.
Tradition says start with prophesies but common sense says play what's fun for you.

personally, i would do a /bonus and use the Fire Imp. He was my bestfriend leveling.

If you're a PvE player that enjoys story lines I'd suggest going Prophecies > Factions > Nightfall > Eye of the North then proceed through the 2 recent'ish updates War in Kryta > Winds of Change pt.1 - No, it may not be the fastest nor easiest way through the game, but it's the logical progression through the story line.
On Classes: Your primary class is unchangeable. Eventually you get to choose a secondary class. Don't fret much when you get to this point, because later in the game you unlock the ability to change that secondary to ANY other class as many times as you want.
On Skills: Someone pointed out you only have 8 skill slots. However, due to being able to change your secondary profession you have access to quite a few hundred skills that can be endlessly combined to create builds. Experiment, and have FUN with it!

The best tip I can give is to really look over your own and your heroes builds, and to modify them constantly.
When you've built a great team you've come a long way.

For an overview of each profession and the secondaries that work well with each, check out the sub forums in our Campfire section. Each one has a stickied basics thread that will help you to understand the profession and how it is played. Some of them have single campaign builds to give you something basic to work on while you are at a lesser skill level.
Find a guild. Check in the Guild Connections section where you can check out the Guilds Looking For Members and post in the Players Looking For Guild forums. Find one that understands you are new and are set up to help out with specific advice.
Welcome to a great game. While it is nothing like any other online game, you will find it is great fun and, as you have seen, the community is generally also great.
Also, don't let people get you over excited about the heroes. While your account is so new you will have very few skills unlocked for your heroes to use. This makes them less effective than the henchmen standing near the exit of each outpost.
EDIT: here's a link to the basic guide for hero's http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/b...t10293264.html
