Why join a Guild?
Chuy Dog
Let me start out by saying that I am new to GW. I purchased the game a month ago and probably played 50 plus hours. I started with Prophecies and currently in Lion’s Gate. So far I have been able to play the game with Henchmen with no problems and last night received two my first two heroes. Right now I am only playing PvE. I am 40 years old and like to take my time exploring everything and doing every mission available. Sometimes I just replay an area to test my new skills settings.
I know I am probably missing part of the game by not being part of a guild, so here are my questions:
Can someone tell me a few benefits of joining a guild?
Should I wait until I’m level 20, or finish the Prophecies story line to join a guild?
Where can I look to find a guild that is best suited for my playing style?
Thanks for the help.
PS. I love the game, and can’t believe it took me this long to try it out

Being in a bad guild is probably worse than being in no guild at all.
I was lucky as a good friend introduced me to his guild and its worked out great.
If you meet up with other players in pvp or pve and they seem like good people why not ask about their guild, if they suggest you join in a few guild activities to see if you get along they are probably a sensible bunch and worth joining.
Some guilds are part of a larger alliance of guilds this can be very useful.

Is it normal to pay entry fees and monthly dues to join a guild?
Lord Dagon
you shouldnt ever be paying a guild join them. once you're in one you stay in it till you're either kicked out by an officer or you leave. so no you dont have to pay to stay in a guild(if they say you do then they are just trying to take your money

Only reason to join a guild is to Dump Faction, U can have friends without a guild, imo real people just slow me down, heros are your best friends, they don't complain, they don't brag, they do as their told,no questions asked,if u die they don't take it personal. create your own guild if u want a cape, thats what i did, 5+ yrs playin no probs without guild. but is up to u.

I agree with Lord Dagon. It's not normal to pay for the "privledge" of being in a guild, but some PvP guilds sell memberships to people who want to have the gold or silver trim that that guild got by winning matches in PvP. (Any guild that charges fees/dues to maintain membership isn't one I'd want tobe any part of.) One thing you'll find is that different guilds have different requirements - such as age restrictions, Vent or TeamSpeak, being active in-game, X amount of faction donated per month, etc. Just take your time when making your choice.

Apart from the social aspect, you have access to a Guild Hall with handy NPCs all in one place (if the guild isn't too cheap to get the NPCs); you need to be in a guild to participate in the Guild vs. Guild and Alliance Battle PvP formats (though a lot of people just ask for guest invites for the latter); and since The Deep and Urgoz's Warren elite areas are designed for 12-man parties, it might be easier to form a successful group with a guild than a random PUG.
Otherwise, if you like chilling with your heroes, no need for a guild.

Guilds? What are those? *points at nickname*
For me, guilds are there for the social part of it all. If you can find a good friendly guild, it will surely speed up your understanding of Guild Wars and make it enjoyable. Personally, I decided not to join any guild because I don't want anyone to have to depend on me as I often go afk during play, or alt-tab and chat, etc. but that's why I came to GWG, so I can still interact with others, attend cool events and all that cool jazz!

Welcome to GW
All guilds are different. Some are run by people who just want a full guild and invite anyone, some want people to farm faction everyday....etc
To my mind the best are groups of friends who get on quietly with their own stuff but help each other out when needed and just hang out a lot
If you do decide to join a guild you will want one that has members in your time zone. If you join a guild do use the guild chat to get to know people, and if by any chance you find a guild you do not like, or cannot find any like-minded people in, don't give up on guilds.

Things to look for when joining a guild.
Is the guild newbie friendly - ie they will listen to your questions regardless how newbie it sounds and they will offer advice and help where possible.
Size - some players like joining guilds with a lot of members and other prefer small close knit guilds so always ask.
Does the guild have any reqs - some of the guilds that are in an alliance that owns a town may have reqs that members donate xxx faction daily , some have age reqs etc.
Some guilds are pve based and others are either pvp based or mixed.
I always think of guild recruiting along the lines of - its not what a player can offer us but what we can offer the player - theres a big difference between the 2.
Lastly a guild is a good way to make friends ( as already suggested ).
You always have the choice to leave a guild if it doesnt suit you.

A Guild is a group of people who gather in a social function using a special feature from the game.
Having said that, no guild is the same. The reasons for joining a guild are numerous but a few:
1: To get help with the harder parts of the game
2: To get info bout the game you wouldn't know on your own
3: To socialise and have a nice chat with game friends
4: To form groups to play high end elite content
5: To play GvG
6: To have acces to a GuildHall with possibly all the mayor NPC's (e.g. merchants) you also find in towns.
etc, etc.
Joining a guild is in most situations free and in your case I wouldn't recommend a Guild that asks fees to enter.
In most mayor towns people are recruiting for guilds (e.g. Lions Arch). Understanding the recruitment line is imo an important thing.
Ignore things like Helpfull, Friendly, Social, etc.... It's not that it's not true, but it is an advert.
Kurzick/Luxon: In factions, you can choose sides in civil war beteen luxons and kurzicks. When you pick a guild, this has some influences to the game (but you can play everything no matter what you pick). to give a very short description without given out spoilers...Luxons are pirates and Kurzicks are gothics.
TS3/Vent: These are voice servers enabling you to speak with guildmates through an headset.
Full GH: A full Guildhall means you have access to a guildhall with all the services offered in towns, like merchant, xunlai chest, material trader, etc. The benefit is that the guildhall is always one click away and you don't have to scout a strange town to find the right NPC.
When you see an advert you are interested in, whisper the person advertising to ask some questions. What I usually ask are the following things:
a: How many ACTIVE people do you have? (a lot of guilds have a full guildroster, but nobody actually plays).
b: at what times/in what timezones are you the most active?
c: If I join, are there any rules I should be aware off?
In your case I would add:
d: I'm reasonable new to the game, is that a problem?
If you join a guild you can always leave whenever you want. so you can't make the wrong descission, but remember that an invite cost the recruiting officer 100 gold, for you that might seem a lot of money, but for them it's just a small amount, however they do stack up, so don't go joining guilds you have a lot of doubts bout before hand.

In my opinion guilds can be really useful, especially as a new player
There's no reason to wait to join a guild unless it's a Underworld/Fissure Of Woe speed clear guild, in which case you be able to properly to participate in guild events and chances are help wont be as available because people in these guilds often just want more ectos ^^
Another type of guild you might want to avoid at first is a FFF (Fast Faction Farming) guild , these guilds can be pretty pushy for faction etc which wont be an option as a new player in the prophecies campaign
Your best bet is a general PvE guild where people are talkative and ready to help
For example huge guilds like KISS have no requirements what so ever lol

I really recommend to join a guild.
Even if you prefer to play alone (like myself) be in a guild to chat while you are doing missions, vanquish, dungeons, etc is very nice.
Also you'll end needing a help in some mission bonuses or that really hard dungeon and the guild will be there to help you.
Check this part of the forum and look for a nice PvE guild, I joined mine that way and was the best thing I did.

Since you're starting i recommend that you join a friendly guild that doesn't in specialize in high end/faction farm or PvP.
Since the game is quite old many players can give you insight from personal experience and clarify things that you read on wiki.
As you get yourself more experienced the role of the guild will change to the point that you'll probably wont need it unless you want:
-socialize with other players
-max luxon/kurzick title
-high end farm (DoA/UW/FoW)
-PvP (and with this I'm talking about organized PvP)
-don't be bothered with invites every 5min in kamadan when you're trying to sell/buy stuff
From all the sorts of guilds i can give you some insight on the faction farming ones (but it's an old experience so i don't know how it applies now).
They will have a daily minimum amount of faction that you'll need to donate, and you'll be farming most of the time with a guild group.
The work you'll be doing will be long and repetitive but with the right people it can be quite amusing.
