Unfortunately for you, it is impossible to go back to pre-searing Ascalon aside from deleting your char and starting again. The people that were Lv20 did so by either completing daily quests or by death leveling enemies.

Also; while you may not like the sudden change, you are actually following the games storyline, where you wouldn't if you just stayed in pre-searing forever.

as you move thru the story line, you will leave the dingy ascalon behind and see more of the world (and it looks a lot better!).
so persevere and you will be rewarded!

The GW world is massive, while "Old Ascalon" is drab and dreary compared to the one you left behind, I council you to progress and follow the story line and missions.

There is a lot that awaits you, and you will not regret the leaving the tiny limited Ascalon you left before too long

If you love the pre-searing landscape as much as I do, you'll be happy once you visit the charr homeland in EotN (follow the ebon vanguard primary quests in the eotn storryline).

Well, one doesn't have to do that. You get multiple character slots. The OP could always make a new character to enjoy Pre-Searing again. In fact, many people devote a character slot to having a "Perma-Pre" character.

Attaining level 20 there gives one the title "Legendary Defender of Ascalon." It might be worth considering doing, since that title can go into the Hall of Monuments (and you don't have to leave Pre-Searing to add it).

Prophecies is vast, SoSerious. There are many landscapes that you will encounter, most quite breathtaking in their own ways. The only "problem" with that campaign is that you spend a good chunk of time in each environment. So if you're in a place you don't like (such as the Old Ascalon area), it can feel soul-crushing. Just keep pushing on, and remember you only have to do the Primary Quests and Missions to find where you need to go and progress. While the side quests enrich the story, it doesn't make much sense to slog through them if it makes you miserable. (The skill quests can be beneficial, though; you might not want to skip them.)

Just remember: A little unpleasantness will make the change of scenery that much sweeter.
