With the anticipation of the coming GW2, I figured I would get back to GW1 for HoM. I haven't played for about 3 years now, but I still kinda have a clue of how the game works. While I'm currently downloading the client, I have some questions:
- I have a couple of characters that finished all 3 campaigns as well as EotN. I know what the HoM is, but I haven't really put in anything into it. I do have some nice armors, weapons, pets and titles iirc, but I would still appreciate a quick guide to how to start building my HoM points.
- I stopped playing GW1 shortly after EotN came out. What are some big new changes to PvE an PvP that I should know about and participate in?
- Are there still a lot of people playing? I play on the North American servers.
Returning player, need advice on HoM and other things

Welcome back
There is a starter guide for the HoM stickied in this Q&A forum.
Major content updates are in the form of Guild Wars: Beyond. Free updates that tells the story between GW1 and GW2. This content is geared towards experienced players and some of the rewards can be placed in the HoM as well. The Wiki is a good place to start.
Another update was the Embark Beach update where you can team up with other players and start a mission immediately.
I'm not really into PvP, so....
People mostly gather on the american districts, so stay there if you want to team up.
However, most people play with heroes nowadays (you are now able to bring 7 heroes) or are busy completing their HoM (farming reputation and such) or farming money in the Underworld, Fissure of Woe and Domain of Anguish.
If you are interested in playing the game from start again, I'd suggest finding a guild.

Hope this helps.

The Superb Killer
In regards to PvP, a few major things have happened since the release of EotN.
1. Towards the end of 2009, Hero Battles and Team Arena were removed from the game and replaced with Codex Arena.
2. In regards to skills, a PvE/PvP split has been made sometime in the past few years. Some skills are the same in both forms of the game while others have "duplicates" that have minor and major differences from the corresponding one.
3. In HA and GvG, the ability to use heroes has been removed. In place, henchman have been added. The skill bars for these have been chosen by players. Some of the henchman perform much better than a few do in PvE, while others are underused due to lacking abilities.
4. The Flux has been added. This is an effect that is in each PvP arena and outpost. It changes at the start of every month. This month's flux causes health loss whenever you move at speeds of 116% or more.
Being me, I probably just made half of the more confusing than it needs to be.

The sticky Arduin linked to probably mentions it, but the HoM Calculator will pretty much indicate what you need to do to get points.
Depending on exactly when you stopped playing, you may or may not be aware of the addition of Nicholas the Traveler, who gives gifts for a selected collectable item each week. These can be farmed to provide sweet/party/alcohol items (plus other goodies) for your progression in those tracks, or they can be sold to other players (4-5k each) to fund other parts of your HoM.
We also have daily Zaishen Quests that award Zaishen Coins. You can use these to buy tomes or equipment packs (other things are offered, but those are the only sensible things to use them on), or trade the coins directly to players (I think silver coins are going for 1.5-2k each).
Welcome back. Good luck and have fun.

Thot
Hi, and Welcomeback.
Most of the game is now doable with a full hero team, but if you like pugs, you should do the daily Zaishen Quests (Predictions : http://gw.web-widget.net/predictions.php)
To fill your HoM, this page will tell you what you need :
http://gw.web-widget.net/hom.php#Guide
You can update prices yourself or ask someone to share his pricelist.
Hope it helps....
Have fun with GW ;-)

Welcome! and don't stress the HoM overly much. Unless it is fun for you. Truth to tell GW 2 will be so full of new gear that the only people who will recognize vet items will be vets. Same with titles. GW 2 Guilds will let you in based on what you are doing there and how well you do it. Not on your HoM score. At least I hope not!
