I am American and long before everyone starting to leave this game movement happened, I remember seeing a lot of American guilds and players. Now I dont know if it's just where I am at now (high end sc), but I frequently see lots of deutch and German guilds and players. Where are all the US-bound players now?

I think it depends how you look at it. Most high-end American players tend to play exclusively within their guilds, so you don't see them out PUGing too much. When I PUG, I often find myself in groups that consist of 4 or 5 European players from the same guild or alliance. I'm guessing this is just because when I play late at night, it's very early in the morning for them, so not a whole lot of their guildies are on. So when you see European players instead of American players, it might be because for the American players, all of their friends are also online, so they're busy playing with them.
Just my observations and assumptions.

Mostly, it's two factors you see here:
1) most players have left and are waiting for GW2, so the total player base has shrunk
2) most players remained in US districts, and since people tend to go where most people are, non-US players now often play in US districts

I am in Australia, and I play in the international district most of the time. I know if I want help with a mission or to trade something, to go to the US district, but lately I have been talking to quite a few US players in the international.

Guess it depends on a person's preference on where to play. I play international because (usually) there's less people = less lag.
