Opera in my ram taking all my memory

Does anyone here ever use Opera? I've been using it for a while but only recently realised it's eating a massive amount of memory. (400k)

Any ideas on how to turn it down? It can't be necessary to run a simple browser with that much power.

Do you mean 400Meg? 400k could run entirely in the CPU's cache - it's hardly a "massive amount".

After a quick google, 400Meg or so is normal for opera - there's not much you can do about it until it's memory usage improves in later versions maybe.

I'd suggest you either get more RAM or switch to Firefox (which averages around 200Meg).

Opera will very occasionally seem to take up a lot of resources, but 400,000k is not unusual nor the large amount it's sometimes prone too.

Had a spike on Firefox today of 900mb... And yeah, I got the values mixed up (kb->kb!) I much prefer Opera to Firefox; it's faster and alot plainer. Usage is actually about the same on this craptop.

I wouldn't have thought, though, the amount of RAM I have in my laptop would change the values of the usage my programs take.

The amount of RAM in your laptop could affect the amount of RAM a program uses because it may use more if it's available. But the main thing is that, if you have for example, only 1Gig of RAM, then a program that uses 400Meg is a more of a problem than it would be if you had 2Gigs of RAM.

Did you have a lot of tabs, email, etc opened? Opera is supposedly well praised for having a small resource footprint. Firefox-- for a while there actually took up more RAM than Opera. However with version 7 I find the memory usage has dropped quite a lot. Of course I suppose this depends on how many and what kind of plugins/extensions you're using.

This is why I was so confused. However it was just because my laptop was shit. Got a new PC now which is great; I'm running both Firefox and Opera (one for work one for personal) and Opera is nice and smooth.

Don't think Opera has any extensions, does it?

Opera has extensions but in my opinion they're rather flimsy little things compared to Firefox and chrome extensions.

And on a side note ever since I read the title of this thread I haven't been able to get the whole "Im in ur <something> doing <something>" styled lolcat memes out of my head.
