I'm new to the game and have noticed guilds advertising themselves (in-game and in the guild section of this forum) as Kurzick and Luxon guilds. I've completed the Factions campaign and understand the difference between the two within the context of the storyline but I don't understand what separates the guilds.
For example, if I were to join a Luxon guild, would that restrict my gameplay in anyway?
If I dedicate myself to one side, would I be unable to do anything on the other?
Do guilds have any rules or regulations regarding the other side, and are they often strict or not?
What are the advantages?
I'm quite curious because a) I'd like to join a guild to beat off the boredom that comes with playing alone, and b) because I'm not keen on entirely ditching one side as I don't want to miss out on anything.
Thanks for reading.
Question regarding Kurzick and Luxon guilds.

In PvP, there is no advantage with the update regarding Imperial faction instead of specific faction for each side.
Some guilds will be Kurzicks and others will be Luxons : for the simple reason of personal taste.
For example, if I were to join a Luxon guild, would that restrict my gameplay in anyway?
Not at all, the only thing you will not be able to do is deposit Kurzick faction to your guild.
If I dedicate myself to one side, would I be unable to do anything on the other?
You can't ''dedicate'' yourself to one side, NPCs will sometimes talk to you with a rude attitude if you have more faction in the enemy faction.
An example would be : (Random names were added) ''Alex wants to use the Merchant in Brauer's Academy. It is under Luxon control and he is in a Kurzick guild. Alex just finished a PvP match in the Jade Quarry and converted his Imperial faction into Kurzick faction. He tried to talk to the merchant but he answered with a mean attitude : ''Go to Hell''.
Alex could not use the merchant because he did not have more luxon faction then Kurzick faction. (Or the opposite).
Do guilds have any rules or regulations regarding the other side, and are they often strict or not?
Some guilds will require massive Faction farming, which is boring and repetitive. Those are like ''donations'' you can give to your guild.
What are the advantages? None

I'm grateful for the quick response, thanks. However, whilst it did answer my questions, it raised a few others.
The faction farming and donations you mentioned earlier; what purpose does it have, and how do you and the guild benefit from this?
If you wished to switch to another guild that were on the other faction, how would you go about this?
Thanks again.

Factions is used for several benefits for both guilds as yourself.
Guilds: The guilds with the most factions are rewarded an outpost or town with access to a discount merchant.
Guilds use the amount of faction also for advertising. A Guild with a lot of faction is seen as an active guild (though it's not that a guild without faction isn't active).
You: factions is used for a title track that is rewarded with a title. The more progress in that title you get, the better certain skills become:

A personal advantage to the player I have not seen mentioned yet: You get double faction added to your track when you donate it to the guild. This bonus also applies if you turn your faction in for skills, but you only have so many characters and so many allegiance skills. If you happen to be working on progressing your Luxon title track and belong to a Kurzick guild, you would not get the benefit of double track points from faction donation (because you would be donating to the Kurzicks, thus it would not help your Luxon track).

Note that if you are for instance a Kurzick in a Luxon held town, the merchant will be rude to you and not trade with you. The armor guy will not sell you armor. However, if you want to take henchmen out into the area, they will gladly go along. They don't care. They get paid, all they care about. However, you cannot take the quests in the area unless your faction matches.
But eventually you can play both sides of the map for explorable area quests. if you have more Kurzick faction than Luxon at the moment, then you are a Kurzick; and vice versa. Once you have done the "friend of the X" quests for both sides. I have been a Kurzick way back there. Now I'm a level 12 Luxon. Just names, really. Both sides have great guilds and good players.

Another thing you may find tho with ab/jq/fa giving imperial faction these days - when imperial faction didnt exist rewards in those places depended on which side you were aligned to , eg if you were luxon you would play on the luxon side for luxon faction against the kurzic players and vice versa.
So say you were in a luxon guild ( and had factions campaign ) you can go to the luxon outposts for the ab/jq/fa or if you were kurz you would do the same on their side.If you were luxon and wanted to play on the kurz side you used to need a guest invite to a luxon guild. You cant donate faction to the opposite side if you are the opposite faction - when you donate to your alliance you get that amount doubled and that amount is put onto the luxon or kurz title - eg 5k donated to alliance gives 10k towards that title.
There are 2 titles linked to the kurzic and luxon side - doesnt matter which side you go tbh as most long time players in gw have done both kurz and luxon titles.
I always look at the 2 sides this way - you need a way to split players so its always 1 side vs the other , in pve it doesnt matter at all which side your on ( tho there will be comments about xxx side being better than xxx - its just crap tho some idiots have issues seeing the diff between rl and gw and they will be nasty towards other side - in a way the 2 sides create some forms of ingame racism ) you can do both sides in the story line with no penalties.Infact cartographer title and protector titles require both sides explored and missions completed.
