Sad scenarios/quests in GW1.
Prince Nightwing
Personally, I'm a sucker for sad quests/lore in Guild Wars. For example, I absolutely loved the dialogue between Gwen and her mother (Sarah) in the Underworld if you had Gwen as a hero. I hope this doesn't sound too nerdy, but when Gwen and her mother started talking I actually felt sad for both of them (which surely is a sign of a good quest) and I was actually hoping for a quest that would somehow relate the two the first time this happened to me.
I haven't actively played GW in years but does anyone know of any other sad/depressing lore in the game? I already know of quests like "Messages, Messages Everywhere?" and the story of Rurik/Althea but I would really like to know of other quests/landmarks in the game.
Oh and as a side note, I really do hope GW2 has some depressing/sad lore
Edit: I've added some links for some of the lore I was talking about earlier.

my favorite quest is http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Lost_Treasure when i first did it it annoyed me because i felt rushed and he would always go ahead of me, but once we got to the treasure it became my favorite quest plus the 16 Attribute points is a nice prize

The Prophecies quest 'Family Ties' (http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Famil...phecies_quest)) comes to mind. Quite sad.
Only Prophecy born characters can do this quest and it's done very early on after pre-searing. Wiki doesn't document the dialogue between the boy and his decesed parents (they're displayed in word bubbles above the NPC's heads ingame). If you have a Prophecies character and, for whatever reason, like the sad quests, this one I suggest you do.

A Leap of Faith...nightfall quest where the girl has to pick between her dad and boyfriend
thedeadwalk!
My quest doesn't involve reuniting someone with their dead mother, or making a Sophie's Choice between a father and boyfriend, but the quest that really got to me was one where some poor creature was sacrificed just so Koss could learn a lesson. I mean, it just wreaks of hubris and is sickening because of that. Poor Slort Nilbog's life, his childhood, his dreams, are rendered irrelevant because Koss feels impotent on the battlefield.
R.I.P. Slort Nilbog.

For some reason, that quest dialogue still makes me cry like a baby.
Also, the Destroy the Harpies quest. As I said on its talk page:
"Oh my god... this quest makes you kill BABIES. What the heck. They didn't mention that in the quest description! I didn't sign up for this! I just targeted one of the baby skree hatchlings, a lvl 2, and watched him try in vain to get off a single "Read the Wind" before his death. He didn't make it. That poor little bugger will never have a chance to fly or or grow up at all. I killed helpless, defenseless babies, for a trade contract or two. Then again, I also legit cried when reading the Oswalt's Epitaph dialogue, so... maybe I'm taking this too seriously? I'm going to go drown my sorrows in Juniberry Gin now.Ailina 02:34, October 14, 2010 (UTC)"

I like the quest err forgot its name but its in nf - possibly gate of pain where dunkoro meets his dead son.

Very sad and adds a rather vengeful cliffhanger we'll be hopefully seeing the effects of in GW2.

Lets be honest, GW may have some scenes that bring a slight quiver to your lower lip, but nothing in the Aerith death in Final Fantasy VII league

Nicholas the Traveler, how he met with Yakkington is very cute. And: "Before the Searing, he was in love with Mary Malone who was killed during the devastating event. Due to her death, he didn't travel for years."
The very first dialogue with him was also nice, a reminder of the past: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Nicho...ialogue#Trivia

Armageddon (Varying Name)
The Sadiest part is Rurik and Togo dying. Now why you may ask? Lets Be realistic. Rurik is a beast and will literally carry you to Kryta. Togo actually helps you. Most Npcs we have to help or join us(do nothing) are completely and utterly useless (*cough Kormir cough*).

I'd say that Anton's story qualifies. Here's this Ascalonian that basically betrayed his people to the Charr in order to save his small village from destruction when the Charr invaded. Instead the Charr burn and pillage his village and his family.
He basically got what he deserved as a traitor, but he's now older and wiser and seeking revenge.

I'm surprised no one yet mentioned the Bleached Bones in the Crystal Desert. The most depressing to me would be:
"Why did we come out here? My daughters have grown sicker each day, and nothing I can do will save them. At night I see the gleaming eyes of creatures that wait just outside the firelight for me to fall asleep, so they can feed on my little ones. Their mother, dead these last two weeks, will curse me from her shallow grave, but I have no choice. Tonight, the soup will contain enough choke root to put the girls to sleep once and for all. When they are safe once again, I will eat of it myself, for I'll not face the morning without them."

"... Our rations were exhausted two days ago. We held out as long as we could, but this afternoon we voted to amputate Cerzak's injured leg and distribute the meat equally among us. Even if he survives, he'll not walk again. But if we don't do this thing, as vile as it is, none of us will live to see another day."

Oh and I should add Saidra's story to this topic as well. I think it's also cool how I think they added her ashes to some Asuran place in the game. Courageous was Saidra I think was the item's name.

Kaira says: "Saidra was a heroic member of the Shining Blade who sacrificed all to help her friends and our cause. She embodied everything our organization believes in. Ever since the Dwarves of Deldrimor delivered her ashes to us, I have searched for a fitting place to leave Saidra's remains. That place is here in Sparkfly Swamp."
If that's a tribute befitting a hero, I hope the Shining Blade never see me as a hero...
Also, the cutscene where Vekk finds out his dad died and scatters his ashes had me tearing up. Especially since that's when we also first find out that Gadd was his father. And now they'll never get a chance to reconcile...

I always thought Kehanni's death was rather sad. Although we never witnessed her in combat, I know somehow that she was probably the best Mesmer that Vabbi had to offer.

Cool topic!
There's a lot of sad stories around, but the only one I can come up with now is A Belated Betrothal. I think it's enough of a touching love and death story.

I'd agree with most of the quests posted here, the ones that get me the most being the Bleached Bones in the desert, Family Ties and yeah, the scene in the UW with Gwen and her mother. Pretty much any sad story involving family will get to me
There's another one set in early Prophecies too, where we find out about Althea's fate - The Duke's Daughter.
I think there will be - I've heard it mentioned in a couple of GW2 interviews that there will be graves of some of the GW1 NPC's to be found, and if you vistit them at night their ghost will appear and you can chat with them. Has to be something sad in there ....

You see, whoever discovers her grave, she then haunts, as an unshakeable companion, until she learns how to be a good monk (or how to make a wammo a good thing)....
So every time you log in, SHE'S there, waiting for you (and you know she'll never, ever, be leaving) .....
OT: I always thought Shiro's story was kinda sad (in Factions), after all, was easy to see it wasn't his fault - kinda felt bad killing him in the last mission. Hmm, maybe sad's not the word, it's more tragic than anything. Particularly the cut scene showing him just before he kills the Emperor.

I prefer when they allows us to choose the best way.
If I have to choose between saving the veterans and the orphans, I choose both, even if I have to rip space-time to do it.
The only good ending is the Good Ending.

Hopeless Romantic.
Not in the sense that it is a particularly deep quest, but rather that the main character of the quest is pitiful.

The first time I went through Prophecies I did feel really bad for many of the Ascalonians that lost their lives, and the Althea's Ashes quest. Rurick may be irritating and a bit of a tool, but he tried his best for his people.
The bleached bones story is probably my favorite, or that of the lost family from the plague in Fahranur, the First City in NF.

For the most part, the quests make some sort of sense in GW. However my friend was by today and I was playing my Dervish and I was doing the collector's "Juvenile Termite Legs" quest when I killed a termite in Plains of Jarin. I leaned over and said, this never makes any sense. I just killed a giant bug and I can see the legs, more than the two I need. He laughed and said they should have told you to get 50 or 60 of them. It is not just that but then I started killing them left and right and I was picking up gold. My friend asked if they had pockets? I stated that's nothing considering some drop spears and bows. He suggested that maybe they lost their real legs and were using the spear or bow as a replacement....
For the most part I do enjoy the GW detail to the quests. I played WoW before and I can tell you that the quests are always dry and lifeless. Just some NPC telling you to go collect a number of some animal part and bring it here. Uh why? Don't ask questions just do it for the glory of Stormwind!

I found this father's description of his plight utterly wrenching. I want to give this guy a brohug.
For a mixture of heartwarming/sadface, I find Too High a Price to be a close contender. A girl who will do anything to protect her father, even up to selling herself. It made the "Here is another arrangement. I Take the loan out of your hide, and you die like the worthless scum you are!" option all the more satisfying when I pulped Sunzu and his cronies. Left me with a Big Damn Heroes feeling.

No quest ever made me sad except the scenario of Ventaris fate. The poor centaur dies alone in his grove not knowing whether or not if his efforts to create a better world were in vain. All he could do was write some of his philosophies on a stone tablet in the end.
On a side note... shouldn't this be in the Druids Overlook section of the forums?

Saddest story in game is Dhuum's. Imprisoned for centuries because of a managerial disagreement, and then he finally breaks free to smell the flowers and feel the breeze through his cloak, only to... get thrown back in jail by some random farming PUG. Talk about tragedy.
Vivi most probably dies at the end of that, poor little guy. Since he's the character the represents what it means to be alive, I have to admit its appropriate that he goes out at the end though. FF games have a tradition of killing off one of your playable characters in one way or another. |
Another very sad tale is the fate of Ascalon. King Adelbern loses it and kills everyone. Walking around in your shattered homeland as ghosts for eternity is not my idea of heaven.
