Is getting EOTN necessary for newbie?
tieve
I'm going to start playing this game in a few days hopefully, but I have read a lot of hype about the Hall of Monuments, which requires the EoTN expansion. While I'm probably going to end up playing GW2 in the future, I'm just wondering if it's really necessary that I start playing GW1 with an unlocked Hall of Monuments, or can that wait until further down the road?
I do still want to enjoy the original game for what it is, so I was thinking of just not buying that expansion until I got to a later point in the storyline, but if my achievements and stuff won't register until I unlock the HoM, then I guess I will get it, but I'd rather save the money.
Sorry if this is worded awkwardly, but I hope I got my question across

The HoM is just a trophy cabinet. Going there doesn't actually get you anything. The stuff you put into it comes from doing the actual content (i.e, campaigns). So to answer your question, if you don't want to pay for EotN atm, you don't have to.

Great! Thanks a lot for the quick reply on this thread and my other one

The HoM does however unlock weapons and other things for gw2. I am not absolutely sure if these unlocks give gw2 an actual advantage but I would guess they would not. They would probly just be cool looking vanity skins with the same stats as any other max weapon.
Also, EoTN offers pve skills, many of which are overpowered and make the game very easy. However, any campaign is still very much beatable in Normal mode and Hard mode without pve skills. If you prefer to challenge urself, then don't get EoTN/pve skills. It comes down to personal preference.
Good luck and welcome to the GW community!

If you hold off on getting EotN, any titles you earn beforehand can still be added to the HoM later, as long as you don't delete the characters before registering the titles. Elite armor sets can be added later, as long as you have all 4 non-helmet pieces (and again, don't delete the armor or the character until they're added). Some things, like for example, the statue in the HoM for finishing the Fissure of Woe, would have to be done (or re-done) after acquiring EotN.

If you want to play any SC roles, which you probably will after a few weeks, EoTN is a must, plus the heroes make it all even easier

As several people already pointed out, you can achieve everything without EotN, and later buy EotN. However, to count, you will EVENTUALLY HAVE to get EotN, as the Hall of Monuments will only register your achievements once you display them in it.

I wouldn't buy EotN for the HoM, but the skills, the ability to level up more quickly and the heroes all make it worthwhile to own (especially if you don't own Nightfall which also provides heros). Every character I have started in the last few years moves to the EotN as soon as they are level 10.

I bought EotN before realising that there was an advantage to GW2 if I added titles etc. I mainly like it for the lore continuation and the new elite armor.

Play the core game for a while and see how you like it, I would definitely recommend buying EoTN at some point though, it's a lot of fun.

Basically, you don't 'need' the HoM. As Marty says, it's just a trophy cabinet. As I often point out, it just gets you a few weapon/armor skins and mini-pet(s) which will be common as dirt and quickly surpassed by the desire for actual GW2 versions.

They had to be done after the launch of the expansion and the introduction of HoM. It doesn't matter if your account currently has access to it or not.

As they've said, you don't have to have eotn at the start to get the items etc for hom, you just need eotn in order to put them in the hom (aka register them for gw2), which you can do at any point.
However, eotn is good for other reasons: It provides with alot of high level content, and story. Maybe most important in the hero era of gw1 is that eotn gives you access to what is it... 10 heroes? Including Livia and Xandra which are staple heroes in many team setups.

One thing we do know is that they won't give you any real advantage in play, so as I said, people will very quickly want to be getting fancy new GW2 versions rather than the common HoM ones. Consider how many people in GW1 go around wielding /bonus weapons.
I am curious about the spider pet - not that I want one - but is it an actual pet that levels up and will there be other (meaner) spiders available. (I'll have to look into it to find out)
