I don't know if this will help 2D artists, but here is a video tutorial I ran through using 3D Ripper DX and Blender 3D.

After viewing the tutorial I ran GW.EXE in the Ripper and took a shot of my Dervish at the log in screen. This is what imported to Blender.

- -

In wire screen view I removed a lot of garbage and then went to textured mode.

-

When I got done fine tuning some details I ended up with this as my working 3D model.

-

Well that's all I have for now, hope it helps out in making your screen shots even more interesting than ever.

BTW the default hotkey for taking a shot is F12 and when done GW asks if you want to log out. You can change the key if you like.

I want to clarify that this program captures the wireframe only, it does not capture skeletal animations or anything else other than what you can see on your screen. "3-D screenshot" is an apt term. You can't, for instance, capture your character at the login screen and then put them in a battle pose (okay, well, you can, but you'd have to do it yourself).

You can capture at any point during the game. So if you are fighting a monster and hit F12 it will lag and then capture EVERYTHING in the world. But only the mesh and textures. I was informed that camera angle is important to be level with the ground. So I left the camera alone and took my shot.

I didn't want a butt load of mesh and textures so I use the login screen. If you are handy with the Blender it can add the "bones" to animate or pose your figure. I am not too familiar with the software just thought this idea has potential for posed models getting the right look without using photoshop or gimp. I had to ask some questions on Blender forums because for some reason parts were "inside out" and they told me the normals were flipped. I knew I was abnormal already but now so are my games. lol

I am no 3D expert but apparently Guild Wars worked better than his Halo example. I didn't have to go to all that trouble for a clean shot. Of course his tutorial is a year old and they do have a newer version of Blender released this year. I am told OBJ works with most 3D editors if you don't use Blender.

Could you then import it in Pepakura and make papercrafts? *considering* Argh, I don't have enough time in my day.

Very neat though.
