Calendar of Events
Spooky decorations, Halloween treats, creepy new quests, and the Mad King's malevolent games—all this and more await you during the Halloween Festival! Here's a schedule of events:
- Thursday, October 20th: The Halloween celebration begins at noon, Pacific daylight time! The mood will be set with eerie decorations in the cities of Lion’s Arch and Kamadan and the towns of Droknar’s Forge and the Tomb of the Primeval Kings. Plus, the Costume Brawl starts today!
- Monday, October 24th: Halloween quests begin in Lion’s Arch and Kamadan. Pit your skill against the Lunatic Court, delve into the Underworld to take on Dhuum with your allies, or embark on a classic Halloween quest from holidays gone by. Speak with the Mad King’s Steward to begin your adventure!
- Monday, October 31st: Mad King Thorn appears every three hours in Lion’s Arch and Kamadan. Participants in the Mad King’s games will receive holiday treats, and those who complete his challenge will get one of this year’s two Halloween masks. The Mad King rewards participants in both Lion’s Arch and Kamadan with a different mask, so be sure to attend at least one of his events in both cities to get both masks!

The Mad King Thorn!
Who is Mad King Thorn?
The Mad King Thorn will begin showing up in Lion's Arch and Kamadan 5 times a day starting from Monday 31st October, so if you missed him during the whole event... unlucky. Because he's not coming back... till next year.
Mad King Thorn appears in the same mushroom circle area in both Lion's Arch and Kamadan. Undead horsemen "Heralds" routinely warned travellers of their master's impending arrival in both cities. They however are simply scripted NPCs and not very accurate.
When does he show up?
Starting from Monday October 31st, Mad King Thorn makes appearances every three hours throughout the day in Lion's Arch and Kamadan. His first appearance will take place at 12:01AM Pacific Time and his final appearance be at on Tuesday November 1st at 12.01AM Pacific Time. For a total of 9 appearances.
Mad King Thorn's Games - Primary Phases
The name of the Mad King pretty much speaks for itself, he's completely insane! So besides really bad jokes, he also beckons players to join in his games. The Mad King will go through three phases of games before giving out a prize and then leaving. The primary phases are:
Notes: Deaths during the finale do not count against the Survivor title.
Phase 1 - Do as the Mad King Commands, or die...
After some minor introductions from the Mad King, he wastes no time to get everyone there to entertain him.
A number of things will be asked:
- He will tell jokes (Bad ones) and expect everyone within the green circle area to use /laugh
- He will command everyone to play music, so /flute or /drums for example.
- Or he may just ask everyone to /beg.
Those who followed his orders were rewarded with Halloween collectable items (See section later in the guide for more info), but those who don't will be killed on the spot!
Phase 2 - Lethal Rock, Paper and Scissors - win or die...
In this phase, the Mad King will challenging a random member of the crowd to a game of Lethal game of rock, paper and scissors.
Use the command /rock, /paper or /scissors and hope for the best.
If you win, you will be rewarded with a a Trick-or-Treat Bag. Nothing happens if you tie with the King. Losing, however results in... you guessed it, death!
The Mad King will do a few rounds of this game before going to Phase 1 again.
Phase 3 - The Mad King says.... Likely more death!
After a few rounds of Phase 1 and Phase 2 games, the Mad King will then begin the final phase of the games... a few simple games of Simon Says!
Anyone who played this game in real life knows how it works: if the King says "Mad King says Jump!” you have about three seconds to do it, or die.
The emotes which are bolded in the list below, are the ones which you must do as he says. Ignore the others:

Once inside the underworld you will still have the effect of Transmogrifier Tonic, your skill bar will have the following available:
The north-east door out of the central chamber will be open. Head through this door and on into the Ice Wastes. At the far west end of the Wastes is the Hall of Judgment, where King Frozenwind awaits you.
All the normal enemies of the Underworld are still there, but you will have a special skill bar with skills uniquely suited to running past them.
You should be able to get past most enemies using only Sugar Rush, although Sticky Ground can be helpful in some spots. Coldfire Nights, however, can slow you down immensely with Shard Storm, so you'll probably want to neutralize them with The Mad King's Influence.

Use a Transmogrifier Tonic and speak to the Voice of Grenth and gain audience in the Underworld as an agent of the Mad King.
Once inside the underworld you will still have the effect of Transmogrifier Tonic, your skill-bar will be the same as the last quest - by now you should have a good idea of how the skills work.
In short you need to travel about and visit all 7 Reapers of the underworld. Most areas can be handled easily with the skills available. Make good use of The Mad King's Influence if the going gets tough.
Take special care in the Bone Pits area, where the mobs can cause massive amounts of health degen with long lasting hexes. Use knock-down on single mobs and The Mad King's Influence if possible when many are clumped together.
Most people recommend completing the Bone Pits are first, as the rest of the quest is easy compared to it.
Above all else, go slowly and watch the patrols.

At that point, the doors to the Hall will close and the party forced to fight him. At the same time, every Reaper of Grenth will appear in a large radius next to the walls of the Hall and continuously cast Dhuum's Rest, also a Dhuum's Rest bar will appear to show the progression on putting Dhuum to rest.
After the Dhuum's Rest bar is finished, all Reapers will stop using Dhuum's Rest and begin to attack Dhuum, the Dhuum's Rest skill will have no effect from this point. Continue damaging Dhuum until he has 25% health and then talk to King Frozenwind for your reward.

Defeating Dhuum requires careful planning, strategy and team work. It's highly recommend you read the following Wiki page for a general idea of what you need to do BEFORE attempting this as the time investment for the Underworld is great:

Commandeering a Mortal Vessel

- See The Countess of Hakewood for your reward.
The Countess of Hakewood in Lion's Arch
Requirements:
Heirlooms of the Mad King
Quest log:
When you enter Majesty's Rest, three Mad King's Guards will spawn with you. To enter The Mausoleum, you must "speak" with the Enter the Mausoleum NPC, which is located behind Rotscale. It is not necessary to kill Rotscale, however — as long as someone can reach the NPC and click through the dialogue, you will be transported into the Mausoleum.
The Mausoleum itself is populated with large groups of undead that are packed fairly close together. Careful pulling should be employed to separate the groups, otherwise your party may be overwhelmed.
There are 5 Elegant Sarcophagi in the Mausoleum. The "correct" sarcophagus is assigned randomly each time, and the other sarcophagi will spawn an undead. After finding the one that updates the quest, you can return to Lion's Arch.
Reward:
- 10,000 XP
- 1,500 Gold
- 100 Trick-or-Treat Bags
An Ingenious Plan

- See The Countess of Hakewood for your reward.
Obtained from:
The Countess of Hakewood in Lion's Arch
Requirements:
Commandeering a Mortal Vessel
Quest log:
The Ingenious Ettins spawn at the same points as the normal hydra and ettin bosses on Perdition Rock (see map at right), with 2 of them spawning at the southwestern point. They spawn in addition to the normal group of ettins and hydras at that point, which may include a boss.
Be careful of over-aggro, especially at the very beginning where multiple groups of Mahgo Hydras and Flesh Golems patrol in overlapping paths. If you are familiar with Perdition Rock, then this quest should present no special difficulties.
Reward:
- 15,000 XP
- 2,500 Gold
- 100 Trick-or-Treat Bags
The Emissary of King Thorn of Kryta in Kamadan
Til Death Do Us Part...

Enter Resplendent Makuun from Honur Hill and walk to the Palace of Bokka. After conversing with Zola's spirit, numerous Suitors and accompanying undead will spawn around the palace. The easiest 3 to reach are:
- Outside the entrance to Bokka Amphitheatre, to the south.
- Just inside the palace entrance, to the west.
- East of the portal to Honur Hill.
Only the Suitor must be defeated to update the quest. After killing them, return to Zola for a short dialogue to complete the quest.
Reward:
- 5,000 XP
- 1,000 Gold
- 50 Trick-or-Treat Bags
Open the Flood Gates of Death
Summary:
- Travel to Joko's Domain and challenge Palawa Joko.
- Kill Joko's minions quickly enough to fill the Kill-O-Meter
- See Emissary of King Thorn of Kryta for your reward.
Obtained from:
Emissary of King Thorn of Kryta in Kamadan, Jewel of Istan
Quest Log:
Enter Joko's Domain from the Bone Palace, get in a junundu, and head east to the quest marker where 6 Mad King's Guards will be waiting for you. After a short dialogue, groups of Awakened will spawn at three points and moving to your position; new groups will spawn as the previous groups are wiped out.
For every foe killed, the Kill-O-Meter will increase by a small amount. The meter will also periodically decrease by a small amount, but you should have no trouble killing foes quickly enough to overcome this.
Instead of staying at the quest marker and waiting for the Awakened to come to you, some players prefer to move to the Bone Palace's gate and engage the Awakened as soon as they spawn at that point. This does save a little time, as you can stay in one spot instead of moving back and forth between the different groups, but the quest can be completed quickly enough anyway that the difference is negligible.
Requirements:
Til Death Do Us Part...
Reward:
- 10,000 XP
- 1,500 Gold
- 100 Trick-or-Treat Bags

Quest log:
Enter Vehtendi Valley from Yahnur Market and follow the quest marker to Qwytzylkak's location. Approaching him will trigger his one line of dialogue, after which he will turn hostile. A group of Smoke Phantoms and Ash Phantoms spawn next to him, which you can pull away and defeat separately.
A group of Behemoths spawns behind Qwytzylkak, and sometimes very close to him, so you may wish to pull him a short distance as well to avoid aggroing them.
Reward:
15,000 XP
2,500 Gold

2011 Challenge Mission - Scarred Psyche: An Extensive Guide - Full Credit to Shayne Hawke
For discussion of this mission you can also go here: http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...t10496194.html
Introduction Palawa Joko is displeased with your little adventure into his territory from last year, and he seeks revenge. You have been recruited into the Mad King's army to take down Joko and his generals. The following is a guide on how to complete this mission for speed based on practice with seven hero teams. How to Start You may enter this competitive mission from one of two locations: by speaking to The Sorceress of Kessex in Lion's Arch, or by speaking to The Harbinger of King Thorn in Kamadan. After a brief introduction of the situation, you will arrive in Scarred Psyche. Once inside, you may step forward and speak to Colonel Kernel. The Colonel can return you to where you came from, or give you advice on the mission (see below: Objectives). There are two Xunlai Chests, a merchant, and the Royal Bard, who will show you the records set in the past day, month, and quarter for the mission. To begin the mission, simply press the "Begin Challenge" button in your party window. You may play this mission with up to eight players and/or heroes. Objectives This mission has the following objectives:
Skills While in Scarred Psyche, you will be given new skills:
The Mission This mission takes place in the old Scarred Earth map from Heroes' Ascent. You will begin in the center of the map with Mad King Thorn and six Candy Corn Infantry. Thorn stands atop the altar in the middle while each of the infantry stand near the mouth of each path leading outside the center. The infantry have the same adjusted skills as yourself, whereas the Mad King has some slightly different skills:
After five of Joko's generals have been killed, Joko himself will enter the battlefield. He will appear in the room of the last general alive. At this point, killing Joko will end the mission. You do not have to kill the last general. Upon completion of the mission, you will be rewarded with an amount of gold, Trick-or-Treat bags, and Gamer points based on your level of completion relative to the Daily and Monthly best scores. At the end of the event, there may or may not be a prize for being on the highscore list. Preparing for the Run I have tested this mission extensively and successfully with seven heroes. Properly coordinated players can likely do this much better than one team full of heroes, but your first step at doing this mission should be learning how to do it with seven heroes. Once you have become comfortable doing it with seven heroes, you can then move on to playing with other players who have made the same preparations. In preparing to play with heroes and do the mission as a whole, you should keep the following things in mind:
My Run I have achieved various times through different builds of this mission, but it all boils down to a run that takes a little more than five minutes. This was always done with heroes for me, and I predict players will together be able to post much faster times. To begin, stand at the north gate. Your first target will be the elementalist boss. When the gate opens, rush towards the room. When you get there, the two Awakened will be just running into you. The other two will be well behind you and go to Thorn. Before you get to the boss, find a suitable target for your nukes. Tell your two designated heroes to nuke that target. Do the same from a different position to avoid AoE. The two Awakened coming from the room may or may not aggro the rest of the normal mobs in the room, so be prepared for this. The first boss should drop somewhere between :20-:30 if you have done it right. Flag your heroes off towards the mesmer boss. Get into position, find a new target, and blast them to the Mists. If you ever find yourself not targeting the boss for your nuke, make sure to target and call the boss after the nukes go off so that your heroes begin to focus down the boss. Be very careful of Cry of Frustration and your hero micro. If one of your heroes gets interrupted, they may still be trying to cast a skill on recharge. Make sure to pull them off using that skill, or they will do nothing for a long time. After the boss falls, run back to the center. Do not bother with killing Priests or focusing them down. They don't need to die to complete our mission, and you can easily overpower their healing and be out before they res their team. You can safely leave behind one dead teammate. You should be done with the mesmer boss shortly after the 1-minute mark. Back in the center, clean up any surrounding enemies and help out Thorn if he's low. If he's in trouble at this point, you will probably not make it through this mission in any record time. Our next target is the necromancer boss, so head up the ramp to the southeast. If you are fast enough, you can cut off the patrols coming in from each boss in that direction, kill most of their forces, and still make it to the necromancer boss before ~2:00. Once you get there, nuking down the boss is quite simple. At this point, based on how well your team is taking the damage, you can run to the ranger boss under the bridges, allowing you to cutoff and kill the patrol coming from that boss, or you can walk around the tunnel to avoid the patrol. You may also want to keep an eye on how many Infantry are up and how hearty Thorn is at the moment. The ranger boss itself tends to sit well outside of its group. This will often be a case where you must nuke down the Awakened mob and deal with the boss only using focused fire. You should be finished with both the necromancer and ranger boss by ~3:00. WARNING: Based on experience, 3:00 is a make-or-break point for this style of run. It often happens around this mark that Thorn ends up being overwhelmed and dies. The point when it appears that Thorn is on his last laugh can happen any time between when you start to approach the ranger boss and on your way back from the ranger boss. If it happens late enough, you can have a chance to heal him and save him from the oncoming enemies. If not, you're done. Breaking off to attempt to save him before killing the ranger boss will add perhaps a whole minute to your run, which would easily disqualify you from making a record. As such, you can only hope that Thorn will hold out. Assuming Thorn manages to survive, make your way back to the middle, mop up the enemy, and wait for the wave that had spawned at 3:00. Take out the group on either side of the ramp and leave the other group for Thorn and his troops to deal with. Our next target is the monk boss. You will probably arrive at this boss just before 4:00. Nuke him down fast. This is probably the largest force at once that you will have to deal with all game. If you are lucky, all the mobs will be surrounding the boss, and they will mostly fall due to the AoE. You can use the mobs that spawned at 3:00 to charge some adrenaline and open this spike with a knockdown. At this point, it's almost necessary that you do so. When the monk boss is dead, run back. At this point, Palawa Joko will enter the field, stationed at the room of the warrior boss. Thorn and his Infantry will march forward to help you, provided they are not still dealing with the enemy mobs from 3:00. Approach the room the same way as you did all the others, this time focusing almost entirely on Joko. Be very careful of Joko's Scourge of Candy skill, as this will render you useless for five seconds. Position yourself in a way that it hits the fewest members of your team as possible. With the potential combination of your AoE and Thorn's Daze, Joko will fall quickly, allowing you to achieve victory around the five-minute mark. Remarks Another route besides Elementalist-Mesmer-Necromancer-Ranger-Monk-Warrior that I have tested is Warrior-Monk-(Elementalist/Mesmer)-(Mesmer/Elementalist)-Ranger-Necromancer. Try different things. Just be sure to only leave a branch of the map after you've killed both bosses in that branch. This is a high failure mission if you are going for a record. If your team gets trapped in nukes, you lose. If Thorn gets overwhelmed, you lose. If the Infantry are stuck trying to shoot through walls, you lose. This will happen a lot. You must become used to it. Thorn has a behavior where he will refuse to leave the center of the altar unless one of your party or his Infantry is near enough to him and is attacking or being attacked. Theoretically, a party of one player and six heroes going around killing bosses would not be much slower than a party of one player and seven heroes. This would leave a slot open for another player to guard Thorn and allow him to move intelligently. This mission, as with any kind of timed mission, requires strong coordination between players in order to be successful. It would be much easier for one player to coordinate seven other heroes and complete this than eight players working together. Assuming some can pull it off though, the benefit would be better spikes, less damage from AoE, less bodyblocking trouble, and extra freedom to keep Thorn alive. With a full team of people and a run similar to what I've described, runs as fast as ~4:30 could be possible. To go even further though, split tactics of sending half of the team to each boss could be explored, potentially shaving off even more time. This could be achieved with as little as two players bringing three heroes each. Splits like these could possibly post times under four minutes. In closing, good luck to everyone who hopes to chase the record time! |
