upgraded Friends list
flammanga
Something I have been missing in game for a while is the ability to Group friends or to add Tags to them.
My thoughts on both those things are:
Groups: The ability to put your friends in different groups. Preferably groups we can name/rename ourselves. example: sellers, runners, FoW, UW, DOA, HA and many more that can be thought of.
Tags: Just a small line of text that you can add to any player on your friends (ignore) list. For instance: "great t1 FoW", "dust seller", "lockpicks", "friendly PvEer".
The reason why I would really like to see this is because I have a full friendslist and only a third of them I know and know why they are on there.
Why should this be done before the release of GW2? one might argue..
To get more involved with more people in game before the release and giving a new impulse to the excisting players will create a bigger tighter community for Guild Wars 2.

That would be a nice touch. Additionally what I would find helpful is knowing what alliance members are online as well. You can look at your own guild roster, but that is all.

It's about time they gave us a small little box that we can type VERY brief descriptions in.
Characters would be limited however, hopefully to a reasonable amount.

/signed for sure. It would be nice to organize the buyers/sellers on my friends list and to seperate them from my guildies and alliance members.

also so you can know why you ignored that person. i tend to forget after a while why i had someone on ignore list xD

Yea, totally /signed
I often find myself deleting people only for them to message me in the next few days and I am like who are you? lol XD
Maybe you could replace there char name with "dust seller" because you don't really need to know who they are in a case like that. Then when it puts there name in the box for whisper it would show there char name. That would also be able to limit them to say the # of characters that a gw's name could be...however, if it also implied the rule of being two words+ might not be a great idea.
Just throwing that out because it would save space and you wouldn't have to have a super wide friend list. It is already annoying to have to widen it to see what zone people are in imo...if you double that width again for a special name...ugh
Edit: Or, make a scroll bar for the bottom of the friend list as well as the side

So umm, these are friends?
Anyway, have you not discovered the low-tec joys of a piece of paper?
Or would you rather have GW staff piss about pandering to every daft idea that crosses their desk rather than concentrating on GW2 or code that matters?

I've been missing custom afk statuses as well. "Away" is a bit generic, I could be away for a couple of minutes ("Be Right Back") or definitely away for a while ("Away"), but there's currently no way to discern.
Auto-afk after some minutes of inactivity and custom autoreply messages ("Don't bother messaging. I'm taking a break for lunch and won't be back until 9:00 PM" or "Just went peeing, don't start the dungeon without me just yet!") could help, too, but I'm afrad that would make GW closer to a graphic instant messenger...
Oh, and what about chat logging?

Its a good idea but I feel an idea for gw2.
I depend on a couple of notepads for much of my gw play as its the only way to remember friends who are really just contacts that you added for a reason that is long gone.
I note down character birthdays I should also list what my current mission state is so I can remember who was going for what.
Sure by all means add it to the game if it can be easily achieved but I will not push for it.
As for daft ideas I think its up to us the players to throw ideas at the community and hopefully anet in the hope that they might prove useful.
Its for anet to pick out those worthy of inclusion.
I rattled on for ages that they should use environmental effects in pvp rather than altering the skills every time there was a problem, now we have these fluxes.
I like to think someone saw my posts and thought it worth experimenting with at least in part.

I thought of it as being an idea for Guild Wars 2, and then I thought that Guild Wars could be an excellent place to test out how it would work best.
Programming wise it is not a hard thing to do at all. Especially since all of it is pre written for tons of applications. Just finding the right setting for the Guild Wars Community might take some tweaking. And can then be implemented in Guild Wars 2 (as well)

You only know a third of your friends list this is really all I need to know. No.

it's called FRIENDS list for a reason. You're not supposed to put random people in there. So you should know the reason they're in there -_-

Good idea to use it, can't really understand why other people don't like the idea.

i actually like this idea but i'm not quite sure how much effort it would take to make this happen.

I've had this same problem. May add someone one day, then not talk to them for a few months, forget who they are, then defriend. A simple tag would help me remember who's who!

Anet seems to adapting their GW2 development projects over to GW1 all the time so maybe another upgrade to the friends list could happen.
Wanting to organize the list as been mentioned a lot through out the years. I mean Anet finally alphabetized the hero list...lol.
We got seeing where your friends are, like GW2 will have so organizing our friends would be cool. Just having two dividers for friends and acquaintances would be nice. My friends list is always filled with potential recruit names.

/signed. Notes and ability to classify would be helpful.
Ability to see alliance members as well as guild would be awesome. There is not room on friends lists to keep track of allies as well as friends after six years spent in game. Old friends drift away but I still want to keep them on my list in case they come back! But we have to choose because 100 isn't enough room for good current allies, old friends, trading friends, etc etc....

I'm sorry, but where in that sentence were there big words?
It's a MMORPG, where people talk to each other and socialise as part of the game... it is improving the game.

It is, indeed, a MASSIVE MORPG
Which means there are definitely more than 100 people you're going to meet in the game, depending on where and when you play (district, time, whether there's special events on, etc), which is why I think this is a great idea. I hope Anet considers to upgrade it =]

+Alliance Friends
Kaida Godfray [Nolani Academy]
Lady Kiayada [Embark Beach]
+DoA Friends
Malandra Tiamat [Fissure of Woe]
Suriyana Tempest [Shing Jea Monastery]
+Uw Friends
Kaleth Bellator [Underworld]
Kinda like how they seperate the online/offline friends.

On another note,

Maybe expanding the friendlist isn't a bad idea.

I couldn't care less about tags for peoples names because if the person is important enough to be on your friends list then I would think you might remember their name. I would rather see an increase in the amount of people you can add to your friends list. I may have no friends in RL but I have more than 50 in game and I want record of this.
/notsigned because there are about a million more important things Anet should be fixing in GW1 when they actually decide to update things

In this thread I have noticed some things returning in the comments, so let me adress those things.
People use their friendslist in different ways. Also, a lot of GW players have taken breaks from players and then (sadly) become forgotten members on anyone's friendslist.
I use my friendslist for people who run and trade different things and for friends, allies and guildies. Which makes 100 as a max all of a sudden seem rather small.
For my English I do have to apologize (I have seen some people complain about it). English is my second language so sentence structures are sometimes not what they should be, and while typing I sometimes miss a silly thing.
Overall I hear people saying the following things:
* They like the idea and sign it;
* Don't want to take away from more important stuff that the Live team is on;
* Would like to see an increase in maximum numbers on friendslist;
* Would like to have a visible alliance roster (just for officers?);
* Both tags and groups seem wanted;
* think that old fashioned pieces of paper don't get lost over the course of 6 years of playing.
So far, I would like to thank everyone contributing to this thread!

Great idea - having 'contact book' functions in a social game seems like a very useful addition to me.
I've always thought the word 'friend list' is a misnomer because there are many people you might want to keep track of apart from your close friends you play with regularly - indeed it is those acquaintances that you really need help keeping track of. As has been said before, traders and suppliers, people with particular skills for PvP or endgame PvE may not be close friends but there will often be occasions you need to get in contact.

I stick by /signed. This would greatly benefit the community. Whether it be groups, tags, colour coding, whatever. And the increased cap (I have dummed my list down to 7, but I speak for the 6+ years players) would be greatly beneficial as well.
I do hope Anet see this and at least consider it.
