If you want the "Legendary Defender of Ascalon" Title then you need to stay till you are level 20 (that is the only way to get that title). But that takes a loooong time (even with the new daily quests) so its kinda boring.

For the rest it doesnt mater much... i suggest you make sure you did all skill quests (that way you dont have to BUY those skills later) and get your 2nd profession. A higher level makes things a bit easier in post Ascalon.

You can BUY skills at the skillstrainers in post Ascalon...

LDOA can be achieved in two weeks if you have the time and patience to farm the quests.

Ideally, particularly if it's you first time, you should explore the entire map and do every quest you can find, especially all the ones that give you skills (you don't have to use the skills, but you might want them later - for other builds or heroes, for example.)
That way you get all the skills and you are a higher level (9-12?, at least 7)) when you go to post-searing, making that easier. For later characters, when you can have gold, mats, weapons, etc, waiting in storage, you can leave whenever you want ... or never.

As a general guideline I would stay till I had visited all the towns finished all the missions and tried out all the secondary classes.

At that point if I was happy with my choice of secondary class I would leave.
I would expect to be around lvl 6 or 7 at this point, but the level doesn't really matter.

The start area of prophesies is meant to be a learning area to ease into the game proper, if you have learned enough then move on.

As a new character that was destined for post, I would do all the quests available to me, and depending on which profession, that would get to about level 6-8. I've done it on all professions, and the only one that didn't get to level 8 was a N/Me.

I agree with getting all the skills that are available to you, check out the wiki if you're not sure what ones are available to you. I always go with searching "List of Prophecies Quests", and the first box are the ones available to you (apart from the Vanguard quests and certain profession quests that are only available if you have become that profession).

Leave as early or as late as you find it interesting in presearing. You can even leave immediately at level 1 or 2 without spending any time there - everything important that exists in the game world can be obtained as well in the "real world" after leaving. The first areas you encounter afterwards are tailored towards level 1-3 players, so you are never too weak.

As soon as you feel you have seen everything in presearing, visited every outpost and explorable area, don't heasitate to leave.

Edit: and forget about that "Legendary Survivor of Ascalon" title. This is something for bored people that already did everything else. For beginners, this makes absolutely no sense to do.
