I started an account back in 2007, I might have only had original game (possibly first expansion, if it was even out back then)...I am not sure I have any existing characters (I am at work now researching, am going to reinstall when I get home).

Is there any advantage to keeping my account from 2007 and adding the new expansions to play?

Or to just buy a new trilogy version + eotn and start a new account?

My main goal is to play through and get some of the stuff unlocked for GW2 and to learn and take in the story of the game.

Thank you for any help, I am sure it gets exhausting answering so many new people who are getting interested (or re-interested) in the game in anticipation of GW2.

All three campaigns were out by then, and the expansion (EotN) was released in 2007. It's possible you have all the games already.

Yes. Your characters will have Birthday Presents which contain minipets which you can put in your HoM and unlock things for GW2 (see here). You'll also have the benefit of having some established characters, some cash, some title progress, and so on.

PS: If you do need to upgrade, you're better off buying the complete collection or the trilogy+EotN and adding it to your old account. It's cheaper that way.

If you still have your chars you get your b-day minis( if you dont delet them) which can be quite valuable now. If you don't have any chars left well you get no benfit for keeping the account.

Aside from the minis you might also have some elite armor which you can put in your hom. But more importantly you most likely have some cash and maybe ectos or zaishen keys as well? Having a good sum of money will go a long way to filling your hom.
You might also have some progress in titles/have some maxed out. This will also help you. All in all: yes you're at an advantage with an old account over a new one.

This isn't really an either/or question. If you can access your old account, it would be best to keep it, for the birthday gifts, etc.
If you only have Prophecies (the original game), the best thing to do is to add the Trilogy + Eotn to your existing account. While you might say that that would "waste" the Prophecies part of the Trilogy, it would still be the cheapest way to do it (plus, you would get the /bonus items from the Game of the Year edition).

Once you log in to your old account, you can ascertain what campaigns you have, and what would be the cheapest way to upgrade it. But, in any case, there is no problem with adding a Trilogy key to it.

Keep the Prophecies only account separate and use purely for storage.

Thanks for all the replies. I downloaded the client then ran into the issue where I couldn't remember any of my character names. So I haven't been able to get the status of my account/characers/expansions yet. Working with support to get my character names, and they are being really helpful.

Ooops, should have just waited to post. New update. I got in, I believe I have base game + Factions, since I have an assassin character. None are higher than level 13, apparently I didn't play it that long. And I have a horrible memory apparently.

welcome back! (lots of people cant remember their character names or what level they were--so terrible memory is pretty ubiquitous)

you have a few bday minis I am sure--and if you get doubles you can sell them for a bit of extra cash (to help with the HoM).

So, I guess I have 15 bday presents, I had 3 out of 6 characters.

I opened them on my first guy:
Whiptail Devourer
Juggernaut
Raptor
Quetzal Sly
Shard Wolf

Should I open on my other guys, or leave as un opened presents? They are tradeable or sellable even if opened?

Moving forward, if I just use this account as storage as one person suggested, I can trade all mini pets I want to a "main" character who I want to fill their HoM on a newly created Trilogy-EOTN account? Does Trilogy mean GOTY edition? I don't want to miss out on the /bonus items.

I guess Trilogy+EOTN = 30 + 20 = 50 bucks
Adding Nightfall + EOTN = 30 + 20 = 50 bucks but if Trilogy is same as GOTY, I would miss out on /bonus items this way and I would have 6 less character slots on a 2nd account?

Also check for old weapons. If you have req 7 or req 8s or any decent skinned items, it could be worth not much to whole lot. Take screens and use the Price check forum before selling or risk getting less than going rate.

Hrm, reading through a few threads again... maybe Trilogy isn't what I should be looking for, but Complete Collection, sounds like that one guarantees all that is in trilogy but also EOTN and /bonus GOTY items.

Look around -- you can probably get the trilogy for around $20-$30 depending on sales, and then North can go on sale for ridiculously cheap at some e-tailers.

If you haven't accomplished much on your original account (which would contribute to your Hall of Monuments) and don't have any exclusive goodies on it you want to use, I suggest keeping the original account as-is for storage, b-day presents, gifts of the traveler, and quest-leeching. If you're going to get a new trilogy/complete collection anyway (which is often the better deal), I personally would start it fresh from there.

We've had a number of people in your situation come in and ask this question, and most have been glad that they started a second account.

Thanks I am just going to get Complete and transfer/mail my mini pets to a character on there. I ended up getting 1 gold and 2 purple mini pets out of my 15.

That's not too shabby, you just need the black moa chick and 4 more in order to get 5/8 from the monument of devotion. Be sure to transfer over anything else that you might need.

Why does it seem like if I get Trilogy + EOTN, I am missing out on the GOTY edition /bonus items?

And I can't figure out why the Complete collections aren't available digitally...

Disregard, I may have found my answer, I will add it here for helping any other new players:
"Also, if your existing Prophecies is not the Game of the Year edition, upgrading with the trilogy key will add the GotY bonus items to your account."
