Hello everyone, I just ordered the GW complete collection for my wife and myself. This will be the first time i have touched GW since beta. I bought it to have a game to play until GW2 comes out, we intend to work on our HoM, learn a bit about the lore, and simply enjoy the game.

Just wanted to post here and see if i can get some information out of you guys and to say hi.

- Helpful Tips and information?
- Places to check out?
- What do you guys enjoy most about the game?
- Guilds? (I like to heal, my wife likes to mdps, neither of us are much into PVP)

Welcome to GW!

Official wiki will be your best friend while playing GW. Everything you may need is there or on PvXwiki or here on Guru.
About Guilds, there are tooo many guilds and I'm sure one will them will suit you perfectly, so you can afford to be picky.

About the other question, firstly finish all campaigns + expansion, that's your current goal.

It's actually very hard to advise very new ppl, you just have to explore the game, experiment and try various proffesions.

PM me in game for some more information when you get used to it a little bit and/or for a guild invite if interested. IGN: Sagittario Mell

Welcome to gw (and the right forum )!

A useful tip that is kind of dificult to come up with yourself is that it's almost always worth it to identify every item that you're planning to merch (sell to a merchant). See the wiki article for more info: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Identification
Quote:
Identifying white (common) items is recommended when the unidentified value is 25Gold or more.
You will also soon start to appreciate the heroes: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Hero
Remember that their builds are just as important as your own; a good teambuild will take you through many situations.

You might find the pvxwiki to be of use: http://www.gwpvx.com/PvX_wiki. Remember though that a part of the fun in gw is to come up with your own builds and make them work.

As heroes and their builds are important you might want to check out zaishen elite (http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Zaishen_Elite) sooner or later as this will earn you balthazar factions which you can use to unlock skills for your heroes and pvp-only characters. The common team consists of 3 trappers and 1 nuker (3 rangers and an elementalist).

I suggest you play through the campaigns at your own tempo and have fun!

Welcome to Guild Wars! Best piece of advice is to take your time and have fun. Guild Wars 2 may still be quite a ways away and Guild Wars 1 will still be around after 2 is released. You'll still be able to work on getting teh shinies with your Hall of Monuments.

I've sent you a private message with my in-game name if you ever need some help or tips or just company.

Again, welcome to GW and see ya in Tyria!

WIKI IS YOUR FRIEND!!!

I've only been playing for about 18 months now, but it helps me out on most days that I play it, say 80-90% of the time I am in-game it is open.

wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page

Use it to your advantage if you need any knowledge! Heaps of stuff on there!!

Helpful tips:
  • When Googling information about the game, avoid any Guild Wars wiki that has the word "Wikia" in the URL.
  • Be mindful of the daily Zaishen Quests. They can grant you bonus exp and money for doing things you'll be doing anyway.
  • ID all colored armor drops so you can salvage useful runes/insignias. Get to know your Rune Trader NPC so you can watch out for valuable upgrades to sell to him.
For guilds, you could join a random you see recruiting in a major city... Or you could check out our Guild Recruitment Section.

Welcome back. Have fun.

best advice.....do what you want...play as you want, its a GAME, have fun. (yes you will make mistakes, but that is part of the gaming experience!) at the beginning there is no need to have the uber builds, the best equipment etc....just goof around and enjoy it!

oh yeah

and welcome to the game (my hubby got my into this 6+ years ago--and I am STILL addicted to it!)

- Have fun & make friends with this website http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page
-I loved the lost feeling when I didn't know where everything was and went exploring. Main towns like Lions Arch and Kamadan for the upcoming Wintersday (although you will experience it in Ascalon, you need to be in LA etc. to do so in full.)
-It's hard to pin that down for me, exploring probably or getting my builds up to scratch and evolving with the game = getting my bum kicked less
-Guilds - You shouldn't/won't be persecuted on your professions choice in a guild unless you join an under 12's one , check em out. http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/c...ions-f263.html A lot of recruitment happens in game, be prepared for some pm's (private messages) asking you to join Guilds etc. in game.

Good to be in a guild for advice/help. Just don't let over zealous Guildies/Alliance members run you through the game. Although a run to LA (Lion's Arch might be worth it for the Wintersday finale)

Hi and welcome to Guild Wars.

Plenty of pointers in above posts to guide you along the way.

AS with some I would agree dont rush it enjoy the gameplay play whatever professions you wish as you both will have 8 slots.

All the campaigns have the 6 core professions with Nightfall and Factions having a choice of 2 different ones in each.

Nomatter where you create a prof you can travel to each campaign at certain points and travel between each once there so you can map back and forth as often as you like.

Exploring is fun and if you get lost use the F10 KEY while in game it will bring up a list just click the quest you are on and it will bring up a map and show you the road ect

As a duo both of you can assist each other along the way and experiance the synergy between both of you.

Most of all have fun and enjoy the game as you both will have fun

been checking out the trial (until my discs get here) had a few questions

is there a way to track more than one quest at once(on my map)? along with that, is there a way to display my active quests on my UI or do i have to always go into my quest log?

Obviously the main reason i am playing GW is to work on my HoM.

Can i use multiple characters to work on HoM?
Someone told me i should have a pre-searing char. is that necessary? are there titles, achievements and loots that can only be obtained pre-searing?
How do i reserve GW's name in HoM for GW2? is there a way to reserve a 1 word name?

I have more questions but im trying to watch my football team get thier ass kicked.... thanks in advance all.

hi There,
with regard to doing more than 1 quest .they can be done in any order once they are in your log an example of this is..

Regent Valley in post ascalon...if you are in piken square quests take you there as with one or 2 from ascalon so you can complete them all by going to regent valley ...Fort Ranik is there so if u have those and then leve fort u have few thats all done at same time with liittle back and forth .then collect all rewards when done...Just click a quest open your map and you will see ..the star where the quest ends .

When quest done it states completed in your log .

Hall of M you can have it Account wide so all chars can contribute if so desired .just speak to guy as you enter and ask it to be account wide that way different chars like Elite armour all help in the points

Pre Searing there is a title there thats only avalable there called Legendary Defender of Ascalon.......there are posts on how to obtain the title in a short time like a week now as opposed to before it took months.
your name is safe if it accpects it on a char and is not classed as obscene or derogatary. so you will be the only one to use that name as its reseved for you if you make 1 in any campaign in GW1

You can only have 1 "active" quest as in only one map marker. However, you can work on the quests you don't have as "active" anyways. You just don't get the guidance until you swap to it using your questlog (L by default iirc)

Can i use multiple characters to work on HoM?
Yes you can, however you have to spend more monumental tapestries and maybe unlock the same areas twice. I have 3 characters which have all contributed to the hom, so it's possible and not that annoying if you already have the necessary areas unlocked. Another thing is that you have to max all titles on the same character if you're looking to get the gwamm title, which also transfers to gw2.

Someone told me i should have a pre-searing char. is that necessary? are there titles, achievements and loots that can only be obtained pre-searing?
It's not necessary, some people do it because they enjoy pre-searing. There's one title: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Ldoa

How do i reserve GW's name in HoM for GW2? is there a way to reserve a 1 word name?
No exact info as of yet, so atm just by having a character in gw1 named what you want it to be named (as long as it is not against the rules).

I highly suggest that you and your wife start characters in the Prophecies campaign. Since it was the first campaign released, it is definitely more geared toward new players. I also highly suggest not just doing primary quests. Much of the lore can be unveiled through the less common secondary quests. Also, don't rush into the higher level places. Do most of the secondary quests in an area and then move on. This may seem tedious but then again, we still have lots of time till Guild Wars 2...and you said you wanted to work on your HoM anyway.

While exploring, look around for things "of interest" meaning statues, landmarks, and plaques. Some of them have great stories to tell.

Since you like to heal, I highly suggest playing Monk. Since you wife likes playing melee dps, pick Warrior. Those both are great beginner classes. As for secondary classes, pick one that compliments your skills in a way that matches your playstyle (you will be able to try out ALL of them so take your time).

In some of the less popular missions, there may be few people to group up with so in that case, use the available henchmen to fill your party. They are AI and will fight, heal, and resurrect you.

As for guilds, they don't provide much benefit besides bringing people together and high-end PvP such as Guild vs. Guild.

You will come across many high-end things such as dungeon running, farming, and speedclears...but don't worry about that stuff now.

Explore the game.
Experiment with everything.
and most of all...
HAVE FUN!

while you can have only one quest active at any time you can....
select one: then check where it leads you on the M, select a different one-do an M, see where it leads....etc. that way you can do multiple quests even though they wont all show up on the M at one time.
When you get to factions, its recommended that you try to do some of the quests in an area (you will find you will need to go and talk to npc A and then npc B, while npc B will have a quest that will take you to npc C and talking to them helps with the quest from npc A...etc).

I HIGHLY recommend you play a few different characters--they can all contribute to the Hom---and some armors are only available to some character classes--so having multiple characters offers more armor chances for the Hom; as well as learning how the different classes play (will help you with how the mobs act as well).

You can also delete characters that you feel arent working for you and create new ones--though you do have multiple slots so you have more than one chance to have a character you enjoy playing (I have way too many I like playing ).

as for pre searing--if you dont plan on working on ldoa (and since you are new, we suggest you not work on it with your first characters)...leave pre-searing when you are ready--as mentioned you have multiple slots, so if you decide you want to have a permanent pre-searing character you can create one later.
