I made a mistake, I think...

So, I read the whole guide to 30 HoM points. Now, just really using it as a small guideline, since the main part is actually playing through all the campaigns. amd that was my goal more than the HoM, but while I was doing them I wanted to make sure I got stuff done that would be useful for HoM.

Well, I got the stupid idea that my anal retentive self would make sure I got the Defender of Ascalon title before I did anything. Well, just sitting in pre-searing is already getting boring for me. Its like playing 1% of the game over and over and over again. I thought having one extra title would be cool.

I am trying to convince myself this was the dumbest idea ever as a new player and I should just move on in the campaign or just go ahead and start a character to take through Nightfall. But, sometimes I am stubborn about trying to get a "full" complete character. Which in itself is a dumb idea this late to the game...

Yeah, you'll want to skip it as a new player... actually I've been playing for nearly seven years and I still don't have any interest in doing it. You don't need LDoA for the HoM (and even if you do you can always just create another character for it later and work on it gradually while you spend most of your time playing your main characters). Move on and consider it later (and if you only want 30 points, forget it altogether imo). If you're level 20 you wouldn't have the same classic prophecies experience anyway (after you leave), which is one of the biggest reasons to start in that campaign imo.

LDoA is not needed for HoM although it is helpful.... as a new player being lvl 20 directly after per-searing will effect the game play threw out the rest of prophecies.

That being said... if you are a completion-ist, i would stay and finish that title because you will not be able to go back, nor gain access to pre-searing with a character created in another campaign... and if you are interested in the title "God Walking Amongst Mere Mortals" (requires 30 completed titles) to transfer to guild wars 2, LDoA is a preferable option than one of those titles that will cost you 1,000K+ to buy.

Seriously, start a new character and go back to your pre-searing character later. You REALLY don't want LDoA to be your focus as a new player. Just do the quest of the day for it and spend the rest of your time on another character's achievements. It'll take you longer to get LDoA, but you'll be doing stuff that's a lot more fun in the meantime.

Not the dumbest idea just not a good way for a new player to enjoy the game.
As has been said you can do that later on another character.

There is a method to getting that title in that you need to slog your way to lvl 10 so you can start doing the 1000 pt daily quests that kick in at that lvl.

Points for killing stuff drops as you gain in lvl but the quest rewards are always worth full value.
So you need to take as few quest rewards as you have to till your most of the way to lvl 9 then if you do all the missions you will get to tenth level.

There are other ways like death leveling so when your ready to attempt the title read up on the various ways.

Filling purple bars and the methods necessary to fill said bars is not the object of the game. If completing a title or progressing it bores you, do something else. The Hall of Monuments can easily ruin a player's enjoyment of the game, but only if you allow it. You may easily acquire points for the HoM while avoiding Legendary Defender of Ascalon.

you can keep that character in pre....start a new one (how about in factions? or nightfall?) and un-lock some other skills and learn about how other classes play....(and do a bit of that hom stuff--)...and then, go back to that pre characters.....

or play a bunch of characters at different times......

you cant really mess up, with at least 4 slots you have plenty of chances to make different characters and learn even more about the game.

HoM aside, it will greatly help you getting GWAMM with that toon.
And it's not that hard/long if you're up to grind some bandits for several hours.

The real question is, are you up for it and won't run away in the meantime?
If you feel you might get discouraged to play GW, at all, after so much grind in the beginning (LDoA is probably THE most grind-based title), i'm not sure it's worth it.

I'd definitely start a new toon. The vanguard quests you can get in pre can be 'farmed' to an extent, especially the farmer hamnet one, but its still no fun compared to playing through the game. Save it as something to come back to.

Thanks for the advice all.

Charr at the gate did get boring but I got to 9 finally, and then started turning in quests. I at least read the guides that far. I think I got discouraged when I hit 10 and found out I still couldn't even solo some of the VG quests (got Countess and rescue dude in northland as first two)... and I couldn't really kill the groups of 4 charr in northland either.

This is as Warrior (I didn't actually choose a 2ndary yet, wasn't sure what was best, but I had Elementalist stuff on my skill bar, thought the aoe fire rain would be good as I am tanking stuff, but I just end up dying with axe+shield). And I had fire imp out.

I guess finally getting to 10 and then still having a brick wall sort of really discouraged me.

If you really wanna finish it on the warrior, choose ranger as your 2nd class. Its the best for a LDoA warrior, I'm almost done with mine and it has been a breeze, also, make sure to get all pieces of the upgraded armor (including the helm from Prof Yakkington for 50 red iris flowers). I will say the longer you wait to choose ranger as 2nd though, the harder it will be because you pretty much use the pet to tank for you through the initial hits, and having a low pet will make it hard, sometimes impossible during the vanguard dailies. Good luck to ya and if you need help on some of the vanguards look up Nay of the Ether, I'll swap to my warrior and we'll rip it up.

I had hard times killing the Charr beyond the gate as E/N with all those devastating spells and some minions, albeit really crappy, serving as a great mitigation of initial caster damage. I think it was about 12th level that i started to die less and actually farm the Charr.
That said, i believe that farming beyond the gate is pointless once you've reached lvl 10. Here's what you want to do, if you want to get that LDoA with little frustration (albeit, keep that in mind, quite a bit of grind - though, as i said, LDoA is the biggest single grind-fest you'll encounter in GW, and if you live and survive through that, you will enjoy the game even more so, i guess) starting with today (and now):
  • Pick the daily quest, Footman Tate. Rescue the guy, turn the quest in for reward.
  • Gather all the stuff for additional armor (be sure to, in general, make vast use of the wiki, it helps A LOT). I know that gathering the flowers might feel tedious, but it helps, too. I might have some spare stuff on one of my pre-searing mules, so PM me your in-game name and we can meet up in game.
  • Pick the new daily quest once it's available, Bandits. With new armor and careful pulling, it shouldn't be that hard. Complete it, turn it in.
  • You might want to farm some items for Nicholas Sandford in the meantime, including getting stuff for the upcoming days.
  • Pick the new quest once it's available, Utini Wupwup. It's a good quest to farm experience. Just start out from Barradin's Estate and kill any quest-related (high-level) Grawl you encounter. Zone back to the outpost and repeat. You may want to kill just a few of the initially found Grawls and then re-zone, so that they are spawned again, without the need to run through the entire location, but that's up to you. If you kill Utini and it doesn't feel hard, go to an outpost, abandon this quest and take it again from Langmar. This way, you can farm Utini himself what yields much more xp than just killing other Grawls.
  • Continue it until severely bored. You may, at any time, kill Utini and turn the quest in, to pick the new quest and turn it in, but i would stick with killing the Grawls over and over for three days. When bored, just farm the easy-to-get upcoming items for Nicholas.
  • Then, finally, when Farmer Hamnet quest is available, kill Utini and turn this quest in. Pick the Farmer Hamnet one and stick to it. It's the fastest and probably the easiest xp farm available while getting LDoA.
  • Zone to Foible's Fair. Exit the outpost and go back inside. Exit it again - doing so will make you respawn right at the exit of the outpost once you /resign. Type in /resign into the chat, but don't hit enter, just highlight and cut (ctrl+x) it. You are now fully prepared.
  • Run up the slope to the south. You'll see some bandits there, they usually come in pairs, sometimes solo. Kill them and continue forward. Kill everything on your way. You will go through a kind of narrow snowy passage, and after getting out of it you will see a cavern to the left, with quite a bunch of ice elementals inside and some bandits on the way. Kill everything, being careful not to drag more than two bandits at once. Once you have reached the cave, you should have killed 8-9 bandits if my memory serves me right. Then, just hit enter, ctrl+v and enter again to resign. This will let you teleport back to the outpost, positioning you right at the exit via the exit-enter-exit trick - this cuts a few seconds on every run. Rinse and repeat until lvl 20.
  • Being lvl ~18, i got ~1k xp every 15~20 minutes, and that's quite a bit, when i went for LDoA on my ele. You might get killed a few times, especially in the beginning or when the quest mobs' levels get heightened as you progress, but don't get discouraged by deaths, you will eventually get proficient at it. The only problem with this way is its repetitivness and mindlessly grinding the same few mobs over and over, but again - it will make getting your GWAMM on this warrior so much easier.

I can't help with picking the secondary for a warrior, or suggesting what/how you should run. You might want to take a look at The Pre-Searing Community, primarily its forum, for hints, tips, trades and companions in the pre. Believe it or not, this community is quite big for a tutorial in an MMO game, and there are many players both going for LDoA and just enjoying the scenery. For years. However, getting LDoA, based on the above guide, should take no more than 2-4 days of excessive grind a few hours a day, and a little bit over a week of moderate playing.

My LDoA character is a Ranger. I already have 3 more Rangers in post, and he was born pretty much just to achieve LDoA, so I decided to keep him in pre, making it a perma-pre character.

I like it much better that way - don't know why, but I feel that allowing the Searing to happen for him kinda defeats his purpose - , and I can still visit Pre-searing Ascalon whenever I want thanks to it.

Maybe you can consider having a dedicated character for Pre-Searing to go after LDoA and stay there - you can still add the title to your HoM from pre - , and a new character for everything else.

Having LDoA on a secondary character, left in the pre-, lets people farm Nick's gifts daily, and adds that special feeling of having a perma-pre character.
On the other hand, getting LDoA on the primary character makes it so much easier to achieve GWAMM, especially with the revised Survivor title. It all depends on one's priorities and willingness to farm something else than LDoA later on, if GWAMM is desired.

Thanks for the tips all. I do have all the extra collector Krytan armor except the helm. If I continue with the character, I may try to /friend or whisper some of you in the game.

I think what drew me to the LDoA title grind is that it was something you could do right from the start. Every other accomplishment seems to be at end game, level 20, after farming a ton of gold to buy armor sets or grinding other titles that actually cost money... having little carrots during the whole journey in a MMO (like little gold stars in Kindergarten) is preferable to me than only being able to get all fluff kind of stuff at end game. Having short term goals (even if grindy LDoA is at least doable right from start for a week but I did get burned out so I guess I couldn't even focus on that as short term, hehe) keeps me going, if I start thinking too far in future, my attention starts to trail off...

There's nothing wrong with having more than one character. I do encourage you to have a character work on LDoA, since it's so easy to get nowadays (your main would be a good choice, since it's a good step towards GWAMM), but I also think you should start a second character somewhere right now so you can experience Wintersday. Factions or Nightfall would be pretty quick through the tutorial areas and onto port cities where you could open up access to all the quests.

The hats you get at the finale are a one-time-only thing, and you might regret missing out.
The Wintersday gift rewards would also help you with your sweet/party/drunk tracks, or they/their contents could be sold for cash to fund your other endeavors.

Just something to consider.

This isn't really a question but there is lots of good advice here. I suggest checking out: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guide...uments_rewards < that link and just playing the game. If you're new, there isn't any reason to sit there and grind. Go explore and follow the storyline.
