The problem with PVP isn't that people have to buy the game to play it... it's that PVP is, for most people, no fun to play.

Even if they go freeware someday it will not change the bottom line that for some people they have no desire to PvP.
godis
Free PvP will only get you more bots to play against.
turbo234
agreed. the only thing that would make people play more is if there was a way to get people to understand it better and make some sort of entry level gvg to teach them. if they were able to make npcs scrimmage against you i'm sure alot more people would practice and try

This thread again.. it's a horrible idea it won't make pvp more lively unless you count bots of course. The problem is pvp itself like others have said, not the cost of the game.
HigherMinion
If GW was free and you had to buy LoL... This is basically the premise of the request, isn't it?
So, what would you rather play if both had to be pre-paid for?

I'm not against of some for of Open PvP to attract players, but it should be limited. Like a weekend or a week once or twice a year.
Otherwise you'll get countless bot accounts, even if they didn't get any rewards like the strongboxes.

Nothing to lose. Sums up the main reason to do this. It worked for TF2.
Xenomortis
Ditching the skill unlock bullshit, thus lowering the cost of a PvP account to £13.99 (which is already more than any of the campaigns) from the currently ridiculous £55.93, would probably help.
Free PvP I guess would help more, but I have a feeling that the game just doesn't get the exposure needed to relight anything.

If they do make a limited PvP free to play, there have to be some limits. No-trade accounts so bots can't harvest zkeys first comes to mind. Since Anet is a business, most likely such free PvP would be designed to get people to eventually buy the game.
Artisan Archer
Guild Wars 2 promotion should be enough. Just make the whole PvP thing free, get some promotion for GW2. Not like they're spending any resources on PvP anyway.
And ye, it's not gonna make much of a difference anyway, since it'll get very little exposure.

As someone who is still fairly new to the game, got a lot to explore about the PvE ahead of me, I'm not interested in PvP as of this moment, and I only play it on bonus weekends for title grinding -.-
If you think, there are a LOT of people coming back to gw for the HoM rewards. Where are most of the points for that going to come from? As to my knowledge, there are 5 statues that count as PvP in the calculator, and one of those you can get just from Zaishen Bounties/Missions/Vanquish, or get extra for the Combat. If the community as a whole has the aim for 30/50 at least (which is what I have been understanding from a lot of people. 50/50 would be nice, but 30/50 will do), one doesn't even really need a PvP statue.
Imho, I think that the only thing that would make people PvP is the bonus weekends and the Zaishen Combat bonuses. Making it free would only make more bots, as has already been pointed out.

The problem with PvP is it has no flexibility to offer players. I can't simply create an 8v8 hero match against a friend I want to pvp against. Just compare with Team Fortress 2.
Yeah, I know Guild War isn't Team Fortress 2, but Tf2 really is a model of good PvP in a class based game though.
The problem with Guild Wars is it designed to reward players for PvP victories, and that limits the player could control in a match's customization. Team Fortress 2 works around this by overall awarding player activity overall, regardless of victory in a match.

To clarify, the Zaishen title track isn't directly affected by z-dailies, since the z-title only awards points for using z-keys on the z-chest. They can help, since the coins can be traded for z-keys, but you'd be better off doing z-elite daily.
tealspikes
About bots, free accounts would have to be very restricted. Like they can earn faction and z-keys and such, but cannot trade. To start GvG and HA matches you need at least two payed accounts on the team, codex matches need 1 payed account. This might help prevent some of the botting but there will still be alot.
About Anet promoting GW2, I've always had the impression that they see GW1 PvP as a failed project. Something they would prefer to hide under the rug and pretend never happened. Looking at PvP's current state, showing off this game would only hurt people's impression of Gw2 PvP.

Free accounts should have a faction cap of 3000 Balthazar Faction. This will ensure they will not gain any Zaishen keys and encourage free players to upgrade their accounts. They will also not gain any Strongboxes. They should also have limited speech capabilities to avoid accounts promoting gold seller sites. Perhaps only able to reply to whispers, not start conversations on their own.
Swingline
Limiting Balthazar faction that low is stupid. Juts have Tolkano refuse them zkeys. Heres what would make GW PvP F2P successful.
PvE closed off(obviously)
Two character slots.
No trading
No Zkeys from Tolkano
No picking up dropped items.
No PvE rewards from PvP. Strongboxes and the HA chest will be replaced by Z coins. Z coins can only be traded for PvP weapon skins. Make an NPC that trades Z coins just for F2P accounts only.
10 Silver = 1 Gold
Using the chat system as a reward for pvp ranks. This is for people who are too stubborn to upgrade while deterring gold spammers. You unlock local chat, ally chat and whispers at any r3 pvp title. Trade will always remain locked because they can't trade anyway. Team/Guild will be the only chat unlocked until a r3 title is earned. Create a team/guild recruitment channel for F2P accounts.

well, heres the thing people seem to be forgetting... All of the players who will use free accounts to grind against... You think its imbalanced now? offer people who would gladly cheat the system a free way to take their late night HA farming to new levels by having a team full of dummy accounts to just grind against... who needs bots when you can box 8 free pvp accounts and just /dance while you farm fame around them... Bad idea is bad... I'm certain that a few more tweaks and a whole lot more openness on the side of the players(thats right rank elitists you brought this about by making your format less accessible to the masses[snobs in a game only get to play with themselves Oo]) will make the biggest differences. Take the time to explain, train and accept new people and guess what? There will be more people playing, and thus more interest in rescuing PvP.
Fluffy Kittens
No, no and no. It's a terrible idea and would make pvp even more abused than it already is.
Shayne Hawke
PvP and PvE are too closely linked still for one mode to be F2P and the other to not be.
Changing the business model this far in to the game's life cycle doesn't seem like a wise idea.

Well, at least they have trial accounts. Then it's up to you guys who wants to get free players to be aware of them and try them out. Post on non-guildwars forums, on facebook, twitter, on your mom's knitting blog etc

Anet would have to find a way to simplify game play. There's far too many skills and skill splits that deter the casual population from playing PvP. Then there's the boring game types that have been the same for 80 months strait. Best thing to do is make HA a bigger version of costume brawl with some premade builds for each profession. This would be so easy to balance to.
GvG is still flag pushing and killing the G Lord? GG on keeping it fresh. Create a unique game type for each map then I might fire up the ole guild hall again. Giving preset builds like costume brawl would help bring in casuals who can get the hang of things faster and again it would be easier to balance. You could even make more and rotate them like the flux.
Get rid of flux.
Get rid of strongboxes.
But wait a minute... you say having premade limited skill sets is not what organized PvP is about? People have been saying that for years, so I want you to do me a favor and take a step back. Do you want GWs to keep going the way it is and die or see it change and survive? People have praised the costume brawl for its power to bring people into a form of PvP and it would be an excellent way to bring fresh blood into the game by adjusting the learning curve. Just as riot brings out new champions for LoL, Anet can create new premade builds and balance them fast if one turns out to be OP.
“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.”
- Charles Darwin
Darwin may be talking about animals but GWs is in a similar boat. Stubborn PvPers have not allowed it to change and now GWs PvP faces extinction by the GW2 meteor. So it's time to decide, do you want GW to stay the way it is?

There's far too much work to change the skill system, and far too many skills to make it properly balanced, which is the main reason they decided to create GW2 as to fix and implement what they wanted in the game, but which was too difficult to implement in the current game.
I'm certain Anet is not going to change GW1 anymore other than bug fixes, glitches, minor skill balances, etc. Once GW2 is out we may or may not see new content for GW1 if it still have an influx of new players.
Missing HB
On theory, something should be done... I guess 45k for a celestial sigil( sometimes, the merchant isn't even offering them...) is quite too much for new comers who want to create a guild...
makosi
Is that why Sigils are so high at the moment? Because of the desertedness of HA?

Hehe yea. All you would need is any two teams of PvEers so it wouldn't be asking alot anyways.

GW PvP freeware would be nice idea for weekends. Freeware accounts should have limitations like some locked skills and rewards are disabled. I don't know how many will run bots just to annoy other people. Maybe some limitations for communication too to avoid extra spam and trolling.

The chat thing might be inconvenient, but ye it would work against gold spammers. Not sure if r3 is the right treshold though, could be r1 or r2 too. As long as its enough to make it not worth a gold spammer's time.
The great thing about this system would be that if it's totally free, even at this time (6+ years after release) we'd probably see a nice influx of players. Everyone that is waiting for GW2 and never tried GW1, will definitely try the PvP if it's free. Also some other randoms that want some PvP fun might try GW instead of games like LoL.
To those who say "but GW PvP sucks now and is not fun" :
Yes GW PvP changed a lot. Skills were added, skills were changed lots of times. But I played a lot of other games in the past years (examples are LotRO, Aion, RIFT, perfect world, SWTOR, League of Legends) and none of them had a basic PvP system that was as good as GW's. The smoothness, the fact that everyone has max gear, the easily modifyable skills and equipment on PvP chars... it's all better than in any other game imo. Even with a bit less good balance than 5 years ago it's definitely worth playing, I'm still having fun whenever I play. That's why I think making the game free could make every PvP format active again.

Other then the obvious folks hoping to farm noobs for points, why on earth would we do this to ourselves? Do we not have enough RMT and regular PvP bots in the game? The game itself is a one time fee, other then that purchase its entirely F2P. Adding a completely f2p model to the game is about as counter productive as it gets.
Lets list off what we will get with a completely f2p PvP model, shall we kids?
RMT bots
PvP bots
Alts for current players to let AFK during a game
Asshats rejected from their previous games
People unwilling to ever buy a copy of the game to help support it.
An endless line of complaints about all the above from the very same people asking for it
A support staff being pushed beyond their ability
Taxing servers people already complain about during holidays with the "small number of people still playing the game"
Etc., etc., etc. ...
The list can go on for DAYS. And mind you, all that is still wrong with GW PvP will still be there. As much as people thing a mass influx of players would be a good thing for the 2-3 dying formats, they ignore that the formats themselves are what is wrong. You can't possibly believe there aren't a massive number of new players to GW every day. Just go to GToB, Shing Jea, Spamadan, hell even Pre. Look on these very forums and nearly everyday there are new posts from people joining the game for the first time, asking if its worth buying and asking for help. In those throngs of people, how many do you think make that shiny new PvP char, with its glistening level 20? Most of them! And how long do you think that gleem lasts? Until some hardcore assclown decides to make the game unbareable for the new player. Sounds like so much fun doesn't it? Get a new game, try out one of its PvP formats, get laughed at, refused, told to GTFO, die, go to PvE, so on and so forth. And you wonder why most people try it and realize they hate it? Hell, its not just the formats that are bad, its the core players that are.
F2P is nothing more then an excuse for the minority of players who help kill the dying formats to Farm new players or to get free alt accounts to Farm. Not too hard to see that.
Fix the formats, make them fun to play for everyone else (sorry fame farmers), and make them as accessible to the everyday player, not just the tiny remainder of people that help make the formats unplayable. There is a reason JQ, FA, and RA are the places you find littered with people( and before these ever so freindly "core players" respond with their typical volley of L2P, They need to be better and such, remember what it feels like to play a game, lose all the time due to lack of understanding, or experience, then get told repeatedly to leave "our" game? Yeah, no one likes being the pinata, and its hard time that you remember that.), its because they are player friendly formats. Do they have flaws? They sure as hell do, but is it any wonder why people would rather go play casually without the amount of grief supplied by their peers? Without waiting around to be farmed by people who have the ability, because they are easy targets? To never get the chance to experiment with builds and tactics? Build a format with builds you deem acceptable tell people that those are the only things that work, refuse entry to new players into experienced groups, insult, degrade and other wise push them away, and what you are left with is a sad tiny little area with no one but the "chosen few" to play. No amount of players is going to revive the way these formats are. HA is a wasteland filled with angry people with chips on their shoulders and emotes to prove they grinded long enough for some superficial epeen, GvG is a joke with the same bland playstyle and no real incentive to play(flag, fight, run, spike GL, rinse , repeat). Until some heavy changes come to the rougher formats, until there exists a way for new players to access them and to get the precious experience that vets throw in their faces, there is no help for these games.
