I was hoping to give the original GW a go before GW2 came out so as to get myself up to date on the overall plot.
1) Is it worth it?
2) How long would it take to get through the story?
3) Can I do it without other players if I need to?
EDIT: One other question. My computer was a bit rubbish. It managed WoW if he didn't get overcrowded. Is Guild Wars likely going to work or should I just wait until I get my new computer?

1) Is it worth it? Did you purchase the game already or are you thinking about buying it? I would buy it, start with maybe Prophecies, to get a good start in the game. It is a very fun game(sais the 5y-gaming guy) It will be worth learning GW(eaven though GW2 is a new game, learning an mmorpg is always helpfull. 2) How long would it take to get through the story? It depends on how much you spend per day playing, Id say factions will take you a week, nightfall a week, and prophecies 2weeks. Given that you play every day for around 3-4 hours. 3) Can I do it without other players if I need to? Yes you can, there are henchmen in prophecies, and you will be able to pick up heroes in both Nightfall and Eye of the north. |

I played around 2 hours per day and in like 2~3 months I finished all the campaigns.
The previous answer was made w/o any help of other player, maybe for a couple missions but I could have done alone with a bit more tries.

Not got it yet. Thinking of getting the Trilogy box set. One other question. My computer was a bit rubbish. It managed WoW if he didn't get overcrowded. Is Guild Wars likely going to work or should I just wait until I get my new computer? |
GW have pretty low requirements. I can list the recommended system specifications from my box:
Vista/xp/2000, intel pentium 4 2.0 GHz or equivalent, 1GB ram, 4GB available HDD space, ATI Radeon 9600 or NVIDIA Geforce fx 5700 series video card or above, 16-bit sound card, DirectX 9
That's the recomended, the minimum is DirectX 8, 512 MB ram etc.

my hubby's computer was made in 2003 and didnt have a graphics card until last year--it could run gw (not fast--but it does work), I also had an old laptop that I used to play on--its graphics are slow, but its playable!
and there are guilds you might want to check out (see the guilds section of guru) for people to play with--if you want to play with people, most people now are playing with just henchmen and/or heroes(available with nightfall and eye of the north).

Eye of the North has the highest system requirements.

I actually had a similar question. Heard the community has kind of died off and I'd be better of waiting for GW 2, just curious how true that was?

You can still find many players online, but not as it used to be.
Nowadays you can do pretty much everything alone, just with heroes and henchs so you won't miss anything if you don't find anyone to play with, I joined a guild basically to chat while I'm doing my things.
I personally recommend to buy GW before GW2, I'm sure your experience will be a lot better knowing some stuff of GW when you play GW2, like see places from GW that is underwater in GW2 or know the references that I'm sure that will have in GW2 about GW and so on, besides the rewards from the HoM.

The community is dying (shocking on a game of this age, how did that happen? :P)
But there are still many players. New players coming in to try before GW2 etc. If you play alone there are heroes, you'll need to get some skills for them but I done 90% of all campaigns with heroes, not because I'm antisocial, just because my heroes don't moan when I go afk (and besides had Guild/alliance chat to read)
Plus Guilds aplenty, the recruiters are not shy about where and who they recruit!
