Canthan New Year?
Inferos
So I hear in trade/local a lot about how Canthan New Year is coming, and I am wondering what the big deal is about in game events? People are mentioning a lot about 30/50s and 50/50s with events.
I was looking on the Wiki and it seems the only thing is Fireworks that are relatively easy to obtain during this time. Is this what all the commotion is about?
Also, are the quests daily/repeatable? Or once per character/account? And the mobs who drop things, are they any level mob, or just 20+?
Trying to get the most out of this since it is a rare event.

I'm not certain where on the wiki you were looking, but fireworks are not the biggest draw for Canthan New Year...there is a chance for a rare mini. The mini is different each year and matches the Chinese New Year animal. This year's mini will be a Celestial Dragon. Check this page for more details. The quests are not repeatable and are limited to once per character. The link above also has links to each quest and will tell you the level of foe, etc.

It's Nine Rings and mini pet what's the most important on this event.
Nine rings are will boost your lucky/unlucky titles rapidly and the mini pet is exclusive to Canthan New Year only, so there's no else way to get.

Canthan New year is one of four events with a finale. Every event is different. But this one rewards indead a miniature (celestial dragon) that is unique and can only be obtained during this event. Beside that it gives opportunity's to easier farm for certain HoM-points like:
a) cosumables like party-items, alcohol and sweets
b) title points for lucky/unlucky titles (stand in the nine rings game) and gamer (dragon arena or roller beetle racing).
Last it gives some very nice and fun quests you can do (only once/character/year).

Be sure to get as much chars to Shing Jae to do the 5 event quests.
To speed things up:
Give every char 10 glit. dust and 2 firework.
Get every char through minister cho's to unlock Ran Musu (1 quest is close to outpost)
Exchange tokens for fortunes, Sell or open, rest of event afk rings and attend the occasional finale.
Event results:
Lots of party items
Progression on your lucky/unlucky title
Chance for a gold celestial dragon minipet
And a (although not new) quite nifty chinese lion mask.
Conclusion: fun

You can farm tokens and sell them wchich will give you pretty big amount of cash so you can buy some weapons/armors/minis/consumables/whatever for your HoM.

There are basically 4 kinds of farm.
1. Lucky/unlucky points farm, from standing afk in 9 rings.
2. Quest farm. Each char can do the event quest chain, its nice reward that can be sold for money or transferred to lunar fortunes that you can open.
3. Finale farm for the chefs. If you have kept in mind what the chefs collect and stashed it away during the year you can hand it to the chefs and get lunar tokens. If you are in a district that is "hosted" that is, a guild or other group of people make sure to feed the chefs with all ingredients then everybody present will get free stuff.
4. Gamer farm. The minigames yield gamer points and in rollerbeetle race you got a chance of winning rare mini beetle.

5. lunar tokens farming
6. players who have stockpiled stuff to make fireworks etc then sell
7. drunk title from either tokens or victory rewards
8. sweet title same as above
9. party title same as above
But biggest thing that drawing people is 2 things - getting a gold celestial pet from fortunes which is 1 side of the coin and players selling fortunes for profit is the other side of the coin - remember this is a case of supply and demand and 1 cannot exist without the other

nononon i think u guys are confusing canthan new year with dragon festival canthan new year u get a lion mask, and a new celestial pet, dragon festival u get a dragon hat, no pet

As someone with 0 title progress in any so far, which would be worth doing? Lucky/Unlucky non-stop?
Meggle
Progression on the lucky/unlucky title grants an increased amount for lockpick retention. I'd think its worth it.

You can hoard fortunes as an investment. Then see if they go up a lot (risky at this point in game) or sell them/trade them for cheap booze and sweets. 9 rings is great if you want to afk the title(s) and have the money, but other titles cost much less right now. Check the quick hom guide for more info.

9 ringing Lucky/unlucky is very expensive and you prob won't complete in one festival. Wiki it for estimated cost and see if you can afford it or if it would be better to use that money towards other titles.

I could have missed the specific part, I haven't slept in almost 40 hours (GW is like crack for new players).

Yes. Purchase enough tickets to last for the desired interval. Or just fill your inventory, since tickets have the same resale value as their purchase price. Leave a slot or two open for any initial winnings.

Leveling a bunch of level 5s in the Canthan area now to farm the stuff... only working with 20k gold so I don't think I will get much out of Nine Rings

As for Nine Rings, don't sweat it. They'll pop up again for the Anniversary Event in April and the Dragon Festival around July 4th. You'll likely have the cash to throw away on it then. You can more than likely get appropriate rank to put in your Hall during those two events.

I read that, as well as the Discussion, and can't seem to find how exactly you AFK it. Do you just buy a bunch of tickets and stand there?

Of course when you win you gain tickets so it can take quite a while before you run out, players often go to bed and leave it running.

The only thing im wondering about is how the celestial dragon will affect price of kuuna minis... Will they use the same skin for the dragon as kuuna just one that looks celestial like?
If so I think Kuuna's might go down in price? It will be cool to see celestial dragon minipets though

There was a rumor floating around that the celestial dragon will require 5x kuunavangs exchange (like pig and cele pig) which would ofcourse skyrocket kuuna prices Just sayin...

Yes that's about it you buy as many tickets as you think you will need then stand on a ring Center and corner rings seem popular and then go do something else for a while.

When I first started, I too had little money and decided to occupy the Center Ring for a few events. I later migrated to the side rings. And now that I'm in the final ranks of Lucky/Unlucky, I stand in the corner, but the damage is done: I have a ridiculous amount more Lucky than Unlucky.
Whereas a friend of mine, who has never quite got a handle on making tons of money in this game, took what she had and sat on a Corner over one or two events and got rank 2 in both pretty evenly.
I wish I'd had the sense to do that.

the minipet will most likely look like its celestial summoning stone counter part: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Celes...ummoning_Stone
you can look at those to see what the rest of the minis will probaly look like (IF they continue to do this feature).

While I realize this isn't the place to discuss strategy, and the Nine Rings wiki pages talk at length about the pros and cons of Center Ring vs. Corner, I just wanted to share a little anecdote from my noob days.

If you're a new player but already have r2 in both titles, but don't have a big pile of cash to grind both titles through lockpicking chests (ie. you'll have a hard time maxing the titles before GW2 is released), IMHO, it's more beneficial standing on the center ring. You'll lose less money and at the same time getting about the same amount of luck points (according to the wiki).
Personally, being a new player with not much more than r2 in both titles and not that much gold (due to my lockpick addiction), i'll focus on as much luck as possible for as little gold as possible and spending the cash i "saved" on lockpicks instead.
