Gonna buy GW2, Too Late to Play GW1?

Hey guys,

I just registered here so apoligies if this has been asked before, but I did a search for it and all the replies are really really old.

So basically I've just deleted SWTOR off my PC after what I can only call a massive let down....

So my friend suggested GW2 and linked me to a youtube video called "10 reasons to be interested in GW2" and I have to say it looks amazing! I didnt really bother looking into GW2 because NCSoft have Aion and Lineage and City of Heroes to look after so I didnt think they would dedicate all thier efforts to GW2, but judging from GW1 it seems I'm wrong.

So my main question then, since GW2 has no release date, and since the Hall of Momuments looks quite juicy, I was wondering -

Is there any point in starting GW1 just to get some achievements to use in GW2? Or is the release date of GW2 too close to get anything decent in the Hall of Momuments?

Many thanks in advance...

You could get your hall to 30/50 quite easily before GW2 comes out. 30 is where the last item bonus for GW2 stops and after that it's just titles you can display in GW2, which is pretty pointless unless you're just looking for something to do ingame anyway.

How fast we talking here? Cause if I buy all the GW expansions then GW2 is released in a month I'll look quite silly lol

I wouldn't start playing gw1 JUST for the sake of getting HoM items. Going through prophecies can feel very stiff and outdated and you might get immediately turned off.

Then again, if you know what you can expect there is certainly enough time.

Also, 30/50 points does take a while for a completely new player. Some people go around saying 1 week but 1-3 months is more realistic. It's tight on time if you play casually.

GW2 won't be here before May at least. You can also continue earning points for your HoM in GW1 and unlocking stuff for GW2 after GW2 has launched.

Have a look at this guide to focus your gameplay on.

Well I'm strictly not a NEW player because I did complete Prophecies and a little bit of Factions before I went back to WoW. SO i have a bit of knowledge but nothing massive. I saw that you could get weapons in GW2 that you could use early on and I imagine that boost would be quite useful lol

Plus its not entirely to get points for HoM its also to kill time and learn the lore of GW1 to prepare for GW2

No, There's no real benefit from it. All bonuses are only esthetical.

If I were you, I would buy Guild Wars to play the game because it's fun. I have only completed Factions and that took me a year. I bought the trilogy roughly a year ago and am not worried about GW2 coming out anytime soon. Before doing HOM, play GW for the sake of having fun. However, the only downside to getting in late is the fact that everyone else have been playing this for years.

My advice is, do not buy GW1 if you are only using it to prepare yourself for GW2. No one actually knows if the rewards gotten from HoM will be worthwhile and you will feel rushed to get your HoM up. If you are willing to play the game, enjoy it, and work on HoM along the way, go ahead. If not, there are always wikis for lore and background knowledge.

May is a very optimistic release date, so you'll have plenty of time to experience gw1. You won't see everything, but I'm sure you'll have a great time. Keep in mind that all the hom guides are meant for experienced players, thus following one of them might lead you into trouble. I suggest you buy the game and play through at least one campaign before starting to work on your hom. You'll need the gold and skills to start with, and you'll get some nice playingexperience which you'll need if you want to get 30/30 fast.

NCsoft has nothing to do with the creation of guild wars they are just publishers, ArenaNet is who makes GW1 & 2.

I started playing for the sole purpose of HoM. Now that I have a couple of 20s (started playing a few days ago) I love the game. It is honestly the most fun MMO out today, and I have played WoW since release.

The amount of stuff to do in this game is literally mind blowing.

Can a new player fill the hall of monuments or at least get to 30 points
I recon you might do but it takes a lot of work and money to do so.
Some points are easy enough but as you continue to fill out each section you find sucessive points take more and more work
I would say the first 20 points in the hom is pretty easy to get.
30 is well within your reach and 50 will require some dedication on your part.

Devotion ie minipets to get the max 8 points here you need 50 minipets
Fellowship ie hero armour and animal companions max 8 points takes 30 of them.
Honour ie titles max 18 points here takes 40 titles.
Resilience ie Character armour max 8 points takes 3 specific elite armours and any seven other elite armours.
Valor ie weapons max 8 points takes 15 of the Opressor Destroyer or Tormented weapons.

The current thoughts on release date is end of June based on the last information about beta testing.

If your've played the game before I highly recommend you get it again and get Eye Of the North, I got bored of GW1 and dismissed the expansion but now regret it as I'm currently playing it years after buying it and loving every minute of it. It's the way it's structured that really makes you want to kick butt.

The problem with GW2 is too much information about the game is out there so that everyone wants it tommorow, well its best to forget about it and enjoy other games it's going to be another 5 months at least.

There is still time to play GW 1, just concentrate on 1 character and get that toon to 30 points in you HoM. You can also have a local character for factions and Nightfall and a permanent presear for the tutorial stuff.

At this point you need to stay focused on 1 or 2 characters.

just go to the HoM calculator and play around with the number until you get something that works for you.

As some said, I'd suggest playing GW1 for the fun of the game itself, playing just for HoM will take the fun out of the game and its rewards in GW2 don't give you a real advantage, obviously.

As others have said, there is no real advantage to having a full HoM. It is not difficult to get 30/50 over the course of a month's play, if you want too.
Will you have time to get that, yes. I think we are looking at a May or June release, but then I have been saying that for months.
