Hey, I just started playing GW again after a year and a bit and I've completely forgotten EVERYTHING.
Can I get more cash from identifying items and salvaging the inscription or just selling them unidentified?
Cheers,

Identifying anything increases its merchant value, so just do it routinely. Inscriptions or other mods only need to be salvaged if they're desirable and you either need them yourself or you have the storage space and patience to market them to other players. If it's an armor drop, you can salvage any high-value runes or insignia and sell them to the rune trader NPC. If a rune or insignia is not worth more than base price (25g), it isn't worth the bother of salvaging it because the unsalvaged piece is probably worth more than that and you don't want to risk destroying it.

Also, keep an eye for +energy and +health runes, they can pull a ton of money - even little ones.
Also make notes of certain +1 skills, I sold one today for like 5 plat just to the trader.
It's not the best source of income, but it's worth the 2 seconds it takes to do it.

There is demand for unidentified gold items. You can sell 7 unids for 5 platins or so to other players for Wisdom title. Through I recommend weapons with merchant price 300 g or more identify yourself, put "Measure for Measure" inscription and salvage for materials.

Thanks a lot guys. They all seem to be gold, so I'll try my luck with that and see what happens. ^_^

Here is an even sillier question:
How does one "identify" an item?
Sorry, I am brand new to this game as of two nights ago.

Merchants sell identification kits. Or, if you have factions or nightfall, you can trade certain collectable items in to collectors in towns.

In your case I would advise that you do not identify any loot that is white (common) until you reach higher-level zones. Identifying whites that drop in newbie zones will usually not add enough value to pay for the cost of the ID kit use. (Some people use the rule of thumb that whites should be identified if the merchant offers at least 40g for it before identification. Personally, I just wait until I reach an area where all the foes are at least level 20, and just ID everything from there on.)
Do, however, identify anything colored (blue, purple, or gold), because these items contain modifications (if weapons) or runes/insignia (if armor bits). This will be your primary means of improving your gear as you level, finding weapons that are better than what you currently have and runes/insignia to upgrade your armor.
