Changing skills outside of combat

As Anet has said, GW2 will allow players to change their skills while outside of combat. To preface - I'm not necessarily suggesting that Anet works something like this into GW1. I was just pondering what sort of affects this would have on gameplay (PvE side only, because I'm pretty sure this would be way too OP for PvP). I think about the ramifications it could have on GW1, and wonder how it will work in GW2. So what does the community think?

**I have absolutely no delusions that anything like this would ever be in GW1, this is merely for fun and speculation.**

If this isn't about GW1 then this is the wrong forum.

Let's put it this way: PvE SC is already so easy you have to have thumbs only to fail at it. Being able to change you skills while in the area? Every area would be able to be done in <20 minutes (edit: casually). It would completely break the game.

GvG? Just walk out of combat and change your skillset? Also would be broken. i dont think it breaks the game, but it would make it extremely easy

i dont say "breaks the game" much, as i dont think they game will be destroyed or damaged alot by players actions, at least not with GW's system itself

and even if it would "break" the game, not completely, far from it, just makes stuff way too easy

it would just make the game boring after a few days doing HM stuff (maybe not for me personally, but for most others it would)

it WOULD change the game's system, as GW is based all on having your skills ready before going into battles

if you'd say "it would break GW's purpose" then yes

of course we could discuss this so much, but its just the way we see it

so i leave it with that /endofftopic

even if i have troubles with the game on NM, especially HM, i'd still say NO if you'd ask if they should make it
the game will be less fun, and not just too easy, but also very boring, as you can change your team and let it focus on any other area you enter, or floors of dungeons

i hope i'm clear, as i'm tired atm (1:15 at night)

to keep it short: the game would be done 100% in no time, and people would've left GW even way earlier than when i saw it happening.... and we wouldnt have 7 hero teams
GW isnt built for that kinda stuff, thats why it stays like this

This is not a good idea at all.

GW1 would be destroyed by this mechanic

I don't know much about pvp but it would be fun to watch two teams laying still constantly changing builds.
team1: "go spike team"
team2: "they're a spike teams change to counter"
team1: "they're counter spike, change to (whatever makers sense here)"
... and so on. This would be the perfect build wars, instead of fighting we could just watch them changing builds till someone forfeits or the time is out. Would we rank the winner by point following their build choices? (a final score like the judge committee in some olympic competitions)

In pve just game breaking, people could effectively solo or 7h anything without any effort whatsoever. Next stage would be adding xunlai chests in every explorable area so if it was still to hard we would always have some backup cons or different equipments in the chest.

Yeah, I could see that being hilarious in PVP as people dynamically adapt to the oppositions builds.

In PVE, it would only work if the AI adapted in response to your build changes, but PVE monster groups aren't really well enough balanced (or, stated with truth, totally imbalanced by the inclusion of 2 mesmers, 2 to 3 rits, and necros spamming damage and minions) to do that.

the game would be so screwed over in every aspect. it can work with gw2 because they started designing it that way and are able to balance it accordingly, but this is a totally different game that isn't capable of doing it

As much as I'd love to be able to set two alternate builds I can switch while out of combat in PvE, this would be abused A LOT.

Currently is possible to finish any single piece of content, including things like vanquish, dungeon and elite areas with a team build.

But this would be abused to do things like: Run build -> Farm build.

Even if you made it so you can't switch while going solo, it would still be abused for SCs, and people could even hire others to be 'leeches' that leave after you run to a certain point, and then you change build to farm.

First, you'll have to do something extreme like limiting the number of non-primary skills a build can have (making PvE and secondary skills share the 3 slot limit) or completely devastating key farm and run skills.
I don't think many people would welcome extreme changes like those... well, I would, but not many others.

Isn't the point of this game managing to choose only 8 skills to take with you?
Being able to change build anytime while in instance would mean having all the skills in the game at your disposal for battles, so it totally defeats the point of this game.

Really, GW2 is a totally different game with totally different mechanics, tryin to import them here would only do bad.

Basically this would just take soloing to a new level lol. It would be as prenerf shadowform on steroids booster by steroids made in a nuklear reactor. Heck, people would be able to solo DoA with relative ease like that xD

This would severely unbalance the game. Maintained enchantments, spirits, and long-lasting or indefinite duration skills could be used "free" before combat, and then swapped out for skills that are useful in combat. Out of combat resses would be "free", without requiring you to give up a skill slot. Specialized counters for certain enemies, particularly in elite areas, would be commonplace instead of something that you take to the detriment of your build. GW2's skills are built to be generalized and multi-function; GW1's skills are almost uniformly specialized and niche, requiring a build to really get the most out of them. That's why GW2 won't be broken by OoC swapping, but GW1 will. Also, persistent open world vs. instanced areas.

Yeah it wouldn't work. The Hall of knowledge isn't for speculation.
