Over in
the Ranger Blues thread I started the other day,
Vodoo Rage offered the following Advise vs my current Merc team of
2 Warriars, one axe one sword,
1 Monk
PC R usually R/Elm.
1 Elm,
And a Henchie Usually a Mesmer,
but sometimes a Necro.

Yeah, your heroes are the problem not your ranger. The Warrior/Monk concept just isn't going to work. The very best thing you can do for yourself is to dump all of those mercs and make a Necro, Ritualist, and a Mesmer mercenary team. .... snip
Your ultimate goal will be something like this:
http://www.gwpvx.com/Build:Team_-_7_Hero_Player_Support
But in the mean time you should be able to unlock a lot of the basic skills to get yourself going. You want your necro to make minions which are awesome in this game for both absorbing damage from attacking foes (like those hydras dropping Meteors on you) and dealing significant damage when they attack in groups. And my Goal here is not to Dis Vodoo, I've no doubt my current team needs a lot of work, and maybe a complete overhaul. nor am even saying what I'm suggesting here is best play; Something as a chess player I do care about.
But there is another aspect to this game which is absent from chess where the PC is the King,
We are playing Hero's here?
John Carter opens this weekend (or last not sure); how many people do you think would go to see the Movie, if Johns role was to play Point guard, standing safely behind his wall of Minions, Spirits and Tharks.
No we watch John because he's always at the tip of the Spear; I read all those books as a kid, and it looks like the captured them well. No we find John cutting his way through all those Minions to reach the Villian, who ever the Villian is, thats the essense of Fantasy Fiction no?
So I guess my question tonight it two fold; one what would a more Heroic team build look like, one that puts the PC in the Hero's Role. Make the PC take those risks, but reap those rewards;
and two just a Question of Design Philosophy,
and I expect there will be as many anwsers as there are charactor classes and people who favor them, and as with most questions in Philosphy no truly right or wrong anwsers, but what are you hoping for in GW2 the PC as more of a Heroic Figure, or the PC in more a Point Guard Role directing the action at a distance.
Your thoughts? BB.
And yes I know a great point guard knows when to take it to the rim himself.

I was once bored and created a team build for myself :]
It consisted out of:
2 ele fire nukers
1 UA healer
2 Assassins nukers
1 ST rit
1 Keystone mesmer
It worked pretty well and it made no use of minions / offensive spirits ( I did FoW HM with it)
Just like you, I don't like minions / spirits at all.. :]

I think that winning and being efficient in this game is taken way too much serious. You should play a style you like, not a style that others recommend cause it would be leet (or atleast more leet). I know bout 1-2 years ago the build to run was discordway. now, if you only mention it people spit on it. Why? did they nerf the build? No!
So if you don't want to hide behind a wall of spirits or minions. just don't. You paid for the game, so play it anyway you like

I'm not playing my character with some random heroes, I'm playing my 8 skill bar team. I consider the heroes to be a part of my regular play and therefore their builds are just as important as mine. The 7hero builds are different on all of the 10 classes I play. What I enjoy to play tends to be the toon that has the newest armor or the newest fancy weapon. Today I would say that my mesmer and my paragon are the ones that most easily roll through any area (elite/hm/nm ascalon). The game is a lot better nowadays since discordway "died" and with the introduction of 7heroes considering what you, as a human, can play.
I have no idea who this John is.
If you wanna be useful as a player, try using spirit spammer (SoS etc)for a change and notice the difference in power level. Not saying this is the only way, but a player SoS is really powerful in any area. Being SoS is also very boring...

Let me also jump on the bandwagon of "play the way you want to" with a twist. I'm for making your team (hero, merch) builds fit your play style. The best PvX builds do no good if you don't play the way the creator of the team build thinks you should.
That being said, my team build usually consists of at least war/par, necro/monk, SoS Rit, panic mes, monk/para for a 6 char team area. For the 8 char team areas, I'll add a para and ranger (or sometimes a 2nd para).
This is what works for me, especially my mele primaries (my derv gets most play time) and has some drawbacks with caster characters. I'm not very good at playing any kind of caster so...
I've also noticed that the way old D&D rule about the party leader (read "human" in a single human group) does have to be out in the first or second rank when moving/engaging mobs initially. I know, you can always flag your tank hero out front to draw agro but that seems anti John Carter (bow toward ERB's gravesite) and can be really time consuming (flag hero, move group, reflag hero, lather, rinse, repeat...).
I've never tried the merc options (too much of a tightwad to spend the real world money) but well equipped heros work for me when I choose to go it alone.

Calista: It doesn't help that there are always folks on the "play it how you want bandwagon" because in truth, the majority of players want to be using the best builds possible, the best tactics/flagging as possible and the fastest/most efficient builds possible, yet don't want to or find it difficult to admit to needing help to get there.

Just like you, I don't like minions / spirits at all.. :] It's not so much I don't like Minions per se; Honestly if someone rolls up a Necro called names him Skelator and raises great army's of Minions more power to him; so long he's having fun;
I was thinking more about the PCs Role in the game; its not really the Heroic role for a 'Hero' character; which we are in the call up menu; but I'm willing to play the Anti-hero now and then in fact that can be more fun sometimes.
BTW your team does look fun. An Assassin/Ele named Elric could be cool, no?
Maya was saying she does not know who John is.
John is John Carter of Mars; a Earth man translated to 'Barsoom' (Mars) he is the Hero in a series of books my Edgar Rice Burroughs(sp) (also Tarzan) great Teen/Pre Teen adventures - A Beautiful Princess, a Man with a Long Sword, and a Planet of Trouble between them; nothing deep here, but great action stories, You'll see the Trailers for the movie version soon enough if you haven't; I've yet to see the movie but it looks like they got it right to me.
I do know the books were great fun.
