The PvP is the same for all expansions (exceptions aside, more bellow). You'll eventually need to play all three, to gather skills from them all for your PvE characters, but PvP characters can unlock them with points you get from PvP victories.

You can have instant access to PvP by creating a PvP character. But if you want to dedicate your time on PvE characters, Faction gives you the fastest run to level 20 (from where you'll be able to participate in PvP), and also access to two casual PvP areas, should you be interesting in them.

Prophecies is the best for beginners to adapt to the game's mechanics, because it's slow-paced and more story-driven. It's also the oldest one, and you'll notice significant improvements within the game itself on later expansions. Nightfall gives a lot of PvE goodies, like Heroes and PvE-only skills, that make you much stronger for the general game, but are relevant to PvP.

Hope that helps.

You can use your character through all campaigns, you don't even need to finish one campaign to go to another.

You can't just choose one. You'll have to buy all expansions if you want to get anywhere in the PvP community.

Otherwise, you're just talking casual PvP; there are seldom few metagame builds that don't borrow a skill from each campaign.

In the beginning, salvage every drop you get, and collect mods. In the long run, those crafting materials/mods = tons of cash.

"Good drops," is a very broad statement, but in terms of what to keep... is whatever you find you want to keep (yeah, not very helpful, I know, but play the game more, and you'll see what I mean). The statements below will give you a general outline of what is marketable in the game...

I'll put a quick overview on weapons, you might not understand what they mean though.
-Any "Desirable" Weapon from an end-chest in EotN. e.g. Icicle Staff, Bow of the Kinslayer...
-Any Canthan/Prophecies Weapons that are perfectly dual-inscription modded/perfect inherent mods with possibly a low pre-requisite.

Keep in mind the latter is especially rare; the market for it is only for collectors/PvP'ers.

I guess I'll put a quick overview on salvage materials as well. You generally want to check out the MATERIAL TRADER and see which materials are priced the highest, so you can make the most profit. On a general note, you almost always want to salvage stuff that turns into:
-Plant Fibers
-Iron/Steel Ingots (Steel-> Iron)
-Granite Slabs
-Feathers
-Glittering Dust

You'll miss out on the first few primary quests of the foreign campaign, but otherwise, you don't miss much.

Another good thing to do would be to find a good guild. There is a section on these forums where guilds advertise for new members. Some guilds specialize in PvP, some in PvE, and some both. And if you don't like a guild...you can always leave and try another one until you find one that fits...a bit like dating

The major advantage of a good guild is that there will be ppl you can talk with, get advice and help from, etc. If you find one in your time zone/country then you'll likely always have someone who can help you as you learn the game
