hey all.

So after having the game installed for years I finally decided to play it before guild wars 2. Now I know nightfall introduces hero characters which I think is a great idea, however I want to complete the original story first. Is there a way to get hero npcs for this campaign? The henchman are pretty poor and there is not many people to group up with.

Sorry if my question seems confusing.

I guess in a nutshell, can I have hero's in the original game at any point.

Yes, you can. You'll have to get to Lion's Arch and take the "Sunspears in Kryta" quest that will take you to Nightfall where, after doing a just a few quests, you'll pick up 4 or 5 heroes that you can fill out your party with.

The Henchmen are a LOT better than they used to be. Really, their only problem these days are that you can't individually flag them and they are level-locked based on the outpost they come from.

Still, if you want Heroes, once you get to Lion's Arch (usually around level 10-13, assuming you did all the sidequests you could find - which you'll want to do in Prophecies, of course, since a LOT of them give you free skills), there will be a popup telling you who gives the quest to unlock your other campaigns. A couple of short, easy quests into Nightfall will give you a Warrior, a Dervish, and two Monks. A little further in will give you the choice of an Elementalist or Ranger, and a quest in Kamadan itself will get you a Necromancer.

You might want to continue playing Nightfall's prologue (to the point where you're sent to the Consulate Docks) to gain some Hero Skill points so that you can unlock some skills for free, especially for your Dervish Hero.

Yes you can, but you'll need to go to Nightfall to get them. Basically, when you get to Lion's Arch (in Prophecies, the original game) you can get a small quest that takes you to Nightfall. You get some Hero's right off the bat and you only need to do a few quests to get a couple more. You can then go back to Prophecies (using the "boat" to fast travel) with your new Heroes.
Alternately, of course, you could buy some Mercs.

Btw, Henchmen are actually a bit better than Heroes until you actually give the Heroes decent weapons, armor mods, and builds.

You can't unlock hero's in prophecy's (except M.O.X. wich you get when you have all campaigns). The only way to unlock heroes is to go to their campaign and unlock them. Like being said, you get a few very early on in nightfall this is what to do to get those:

a: go to lion's arch
b: do the quest "Sunspears in Kryta" given by lionguard Figo. after completion you will be transfered to the sundocks (nightfall).
c: Take the quest "battle preparstions from Bendro.
d: leave the small area sundocks to enter Kamadan (town).
e: leave Kamadon to the north into the plains of Jarinn.
f: talk to Kormir. You now have the hero's Koss (warrior), Dunkoro (monk), Melonni (dervish) and Tahlkora (monk). After that you can use the ship on your map to travel back.

A few notes though. If sticking to Prophecy's, Melonni will be worthless cause there are no dervish skills available. The most part of prophecy's you prolly only need one monk (so the second is worthless too) and Koss as a warrior. So you might want to also do "Zaishen Elite" from Hayao (also in the sun docks) to unlock either Jin (ranger) or Sousuke (elementalist). If your not an ele myself, I would go for Sousuke.

This quest takes you bit further into nightfall (bout 15 minutes, and 1-2 more outposts), but the extra hero is very nice.

Like being said above, an unskilled/unequiped hero is worse then an hecnhman. So you need to get them skills, weapons and armor. prophecy's was never intended with that in mind. So if you want to properly use them, you might want to play longer in nightfall. after bout 2-3 hours of gameplay you can change your secondairy profession to be able to get skills for your heroes. In prophecy's you need to play 12 missions before you can do that (and so depending on your primairy/secondairy profession) the max amount of heroes you can really use AND profit from is 3 (from wich 2 are monks).

Bottom line: prophecy's was never intended to use heroes. So to use them properly the only good option is to play a fair bit of nightfall.

IF you managed to pick up eye of the north you can also get already level 20 heroes at LA ---(quest to take you to there is 'what lies beneath').
otherwise the other way is thru nightfall as mentioned above.

The suggestions for getting the Nightfall characters are good...don't forget, you can pick up a Necro, Olias, after some more questing there in Kamadan.

Eye of the North....if you have it, once you are level 10 and get to Lion's Arch, you can take the quest cosyfiep mentioned to get to Boreal Station...you automatically pick up a level 20 Monk and level 20 Elementalist...if you run, or have someone run you, to Eye of the North, go inside the Hall of Monuments there, you will also pick up a valuable level 20 Mesmer...

Makes your Prophecies progress a bit easier to manage

Good luck, have fun!!
