Guild War 1 Status after Guild Wars 2

Rather worried to what is going to happen after Guild Wars 2 is out, I won't be playing it any time soon since I won't be able to play the game on even minimum requirements. So that means I'm sticking to Guild Wars 1 (Because its an amazing game*)

They say that the servers will still be around even after the release of Guild Wars 2 which is amazing!, but I rather worry about the community, since the player count will tremendously drop, making some quests rather difficult to complete since some quests require people to help out.

I wonder if anyone is in the same situation as me? That people will continue to play Guild Wars 1 even after Guild Wars 2?
Is there any active guilds which have an active player count who will still be around after Guild Wars 2, so Guild Wars 1 doesn't seem so empty?

*Thanks in advance

Its hard to predict on what is going to happen... i am playing gw1 for 6.5 years now and i still liked it. I pre-purchased gw2 and i am looking forward to play it, but that doesnt mean i gonna uninstall gw1 and ofcourse i dont know yet if i gonna like gw2 at all.

My gw1 activity probably depends on how much i gonna like gw2 and if i want to compete my 50/50 hom (i am stuck on 47 now due a lack of motivation)...

I can feel your pain :P
That or at least make it offline and give us the data to download, I'd hate to have my chars totally lost forever.

I'm sure this is probably what they'll do eventually - make it so that you can play offline or maybe allow private servers.

Whether or not I leave GW1 for GW2 all depends on how the region-locking fiasco (where, as it currently stands, you MUST buy a second copy of the game if you wish to play in the opposite reason; they claim to be working on a ''solution,'' but...) ends up playing out. Even though I would not be affected by it in the slightest (the odds of me traveling even outside my current province being virtually nil), I can't support such an anti-consumer system.

I plan on playing until I get tired of it--with more than 60 characters I have yet to get tired (and over 10k hours and 7+years playing)...I dont see it happening anytime soon.

I DO see that people will find out that the SAME company that made gw1 (with the empty promises et.al.) is making gw2 and that customer service probably wont change all that much...cant wait for the first 'they promised monthly updates and its been 2 months' happens over there....(the pre-purchase fiasco sound soooo much like the factions ones that I had to stop reading because I was laughing sooo hard).

There is barely anything I recognize from gw1 in gw2 (aside from the name)...so its totally foreign for me and holds NO appeal (outside of character creation). I dont pvp, I LIKE playing with my heroes, I HATE playing with tons of immature kids (I leave chat OFF in towns so I dont have to listen to them there--why would I want to party with them outside of town?????), I LIKE secondary skills....ALL GONE in gw2
(I also dont like getting nickeled and dimed to death for things like map travel---I dont tend to keep large amounts--see any-- of cash on hand).

no, I will still be playing until my computer is no longer supported (xp) or they shut the servers down

It would be good if they did include an offline feature if the servers were shut down

I doubt that, as they are so attached to their code, and I guess part of it as been reused in the two. Also I think there would be a total char wipe anyway in that case, add to this that each priv server has short life...it wouldn't be very good.

If there is one thing that scares me about GW2, it's this. I cringe each time I see "I'm bored lolz bring on GW2 lolol" in wow chat (I resubbed recently out of pure boredom) but to be frank - I'm quite sure WoW's cesspool of a community will follow us to GW2 in droves. This makes me very sad indeed

Compared to how it was a few years ago, GW1 is already kind of empty. I don't expect it to get any better after GW2 is released. Mostly what will be left are people who can't afford to move on to GW2 (or SWTOR, or whatever), so it could end up as a vast wasteland populated mostly by kids.

Considering I haven't played this game in about 5 years, and returned to it, for the full experience after purchasing it from a game store 2 days ago. Only to find out that the game is pretty empty when in comparison to its prime, and to discover that the servers probably will not hold long enough for me to do everything that I want to do on Guild Wars, meaning I'm not going to do anything I wanted to do in the game, so it feels like I'm being scammed by the company, and since the game is online only it means I can't even do any of this on single-player

If they don't incorporate some sort of single-player update before the servers go down, I'll be very unimpressed...
They can't sell a game in stores only to find out that it will become unplayable in the near-future, also I don't even feel like playing it now because it feels like anything I accomplish will simply be lost forever in the future...

Well the fact they are still selling the game now, to my mind implies some commitment to their consumers that the game should be playable for a reasonable period of time to complete the content; Consider the very long lead time they are giving everyone concerning suspending support for obsolete versions of Windows; much as I might curse the Devs now and again, and again, and again, and again; they obviously care about their relationship with the players.

It's only a guess, but I expect we have at least a couple years to complete that content; that said, given the 400+ hours of Beauty, Entertainment; oh and screaming frustration; that I’ve gotten out of Prophecies (over 2 toons); I cannot argue I haven’t all ready gotten my moneys worth myself.

I certainly would purchase a stand alone GW1 Especially if it included the expanded missions and war in Kryta; which I don’t own just yet; honestly I hope they will pursue that opportunity in future.

Till then I have wayyyyy to many Screen Captures; my own personal record of "Claudia's" Journey and that gets a little larger most every day. BB.

I don't like that it feels like a due date in order to get everything done, it really doesn't feel right, I feel rushed to do everything
It puts me off of the game...

This.

Maybe "many years" is a bit over-optimistic, but still...

Server costs are likely long ammortized and keeping them running is going to be rather inexpensive right now, so as long as someone plays, I really don't see them shutting it down anytime soon.

GW1 doesn't even need dedicated servers anymore. If GW2 turns out to be even half the commercial success GW1 was at launch, the two games can be served in parallel and GW1 has really nothing to fear.

The only thing we can worry about is the PvP state . Servors wont be shut down for sure, but PvP will be about who got the most accounts to sync them..

It's funny the way that some people almost think that GW1 is one big dedicated server that can only play the one game. Sort of like the foolishness in Star Trek Voyager where the Doctor had to transfer himself from point to point rather just spawning another copy.
Basically, after GW2 goes live, GW1 could be thought of as a background task running on the servers. It's all just software - all those outposts and districts in GW1 don't actually exist anywhere, they're just software modules that are spawned as needed. Sort of like when we run a browser, music player, etc, in the background while playing.
GW 1 & 2 can very easily co-exist on the same server farm.

Of course,
The ultimate question is how long will GW's justify the dedication of resources in terms of Servers, and Virtual servers after GW2 is released; I think we can all help ourselves a little by continuing to purchase, Costumes, Mercs, and other little items now and again; and keeping the Revenue stream going. Honestly if at some point A-Net looks into a subscription; I'ld be down for a reasonable maintenance fee.

Technically I hope GW is kept on a seperate server(s) and not a Virtual Machine, if only because having seen GW2 thats going to be very Graphic/Resource intensive, and yes the Graphics will be painted on the Clients, but with the Servers coordinating all the instances in an open world; I expect thats going to gobble up alot of the available computing resources of any machine GW would be coexisting on; Anyhow the programing challange is considerable; hopefully they make their lives simpler and our lives better; by Maintain GW1 its own machine(s), as long a possible.

I like that ... and then with all pvp in a time in 1 or 2 years i have maxed lux and kurz title as well
I will keep playing GW1 just because I like it and have no rush / pressure to test and buy GW2.

First of all, a server farm is just a big collection of hundreds of computers. When we talk about GW1 servers, we are not talking just one computer - we're talking a whole bunch of individual computers who's particular task can be nearly anything. Some computers (in the farm) can be just handling logins, others can be doing the 'friends' network, some can be running instances, some running PvP, some running ANet's website, or ANet's private Ventrilo, etc. There would be no need to run GW1 as Virtual machine, especially considering that the game would actually run over many computers.
When I said that GW1 would run as a background task, I didn't mean that it would run in the background on particular computers, I meant that it would run on the same "farm", sharing resources such as I/O, logins, friends network etc, and taking up a relatively small percentage of the total "farm".

Thats kind of cool, the Server farms I'm used to from SATCOM are generally only a handful of servers; (per Customer) or at most one Standard Equipment Rack; I've only seen one farm that big; and thats all TV content. Thanks though, interesting stuff. BB.

Oh well dont want to get too far OT.
