Good news for people who (like me) want to change their login email - ty ANet! :D

Perfect! This has long been a major security risk. Once a hacker got in your account, they would always know 2 of 3 details needed to get in your account:
* Your login, and your character names (unlikely you would recreate all characters)

Even worse, they would know your linked GW2 account name before the game is even launched.

k im looking to pre-order gw2 in the near future but the current account i have was given by my brother who used his personal e-mail which i do not have access to only his gw account. when i pre order could i use my personal email and still link it with his gw account? reason i ask is because i finally achieved gwamm + 50/50 so after all that grinding i would hate to find out that it was all for not lol.

Can my linked GW1 and GW2 have seperate username and passwords, or do they have to be unlinked?

I need seperate details for both account.

My Guild Wars account is 6 years old and the email it uses to login is long dead, will I still be able to link it to my GW2 account? :O never considered this before...

When I created my beta account, while it asked me for my GW login name (defunct email acct), it allowed me to enter a current email address for GW2.

Let me TRANSLATE that for you with my GW1 experience of ArenaNet:

When I created my GW2 account, using the same email address wasn't an issue.

I had problems when trying to set a longer password which worked for my GW2 account login, but rendered my GW1 account unable to login.

I want either a different username and password, or just a different password for both games, but any password change I apply to one game also gets applied to the other. I cannot bear to have 100% identical logins for both games.

During registration you have the option of including a contact email address if your login address is invalid, so I imagine you could do that and get correspondence going to your personal email rather than his, but don't go spending your money on the basis of some random internet person's imaginings. :P You'd have to make your own mind up whether to risk it or not. You could try asking support but as it wasn't your account originally (even though it was previously owned by a family member and not just some random second hand ebay sale) I'm not sure they'd be able to help.

Your best bet might be to wait until the login change function is implemented, change the email address, and then pre-order it at that point - if you can wait that long.

It seems that at the moment they have to be the same or be unlinked. I remember reading that you don't have to link your GW1 and 2 accounts at registration, you can link them later on, so if you can get support to unlink the accounts (no idea if that's even possible) you'll be able to have different login details for the time being.

So cynical, but so very true! :P

My login name for GW1 isn't a valid email address - it's one of those NCSoft master account names. When I registered my pre-purchased GW2 account, I linked it to my GW1 account using my normal GW1 login info. Then the next screen during registration asked me what email address I wanted to use to associate with my GW2 account. I gave it the email address I wanted to use (which isn't the same as my GW1 login name).

I've received all the correct correspondences from GW2 at the email address I provided - my "thanks for registering," and my "come download the client" emails. I've had no trouble logging into the GW2 beta forums, and I don't anticipate any problems logging into the GW2 beta tomorrow.

So yes, you can provide an updated email address to associate with your GW2 account while still using the same login credentials you currently use for GW1 to link the accounts - no problem.

This couldn't have come a few months earlier, Anet, or years?

Now I've lost my will to play GW2 because of this.

Some time ago I was hacked. Thanks to support I recovered control of my account and I informed the email provider that my address had been hacked. They blocked/deactivated that email address.

I was concerned that having a "dead" email account for the login to GW1 would prejudice my ability to link to GW2. I had quite a long conversation with support on this, and my understanding is that at this point, the email used in your GW1 account is no more than a dumb series of characters. No communications are sent to it. What matters is your char name and password.

Please, every time someone says Huzzah I get that horrible cutscene stuck in my head.

I don't understand this. One of my wife's accounts was hacked and the email changed.

So either that hacker was VERY clever or there's a possibility for this that they just don't want to announce. It's been a frustrating ordeal.

Excited to see this functionality finally though.
