How do you play gw?
Railguy
evening
Started to play gw and it was fun.
At least until i hit lvl 20.
Now when i walk out of a village with my party and i see a mob, i just turn arround and walk back into the village. I could attack the mob offcourse but it will whipe the party.
And thats since i reach lvl 20, every group of mobs, even if there are only 3 of them, will kill me and the complete party without a prob. I used runes on the heros changed skills but i just dont understand how i am going to be able to kill anything anymore.
Did i miss some secret hidden merchants with new items??
So could somebody plz try to explain what the heck i am doing wrong?
thnx

do you have max armor for your class? (60 casters, 70 rangers..etc)? what skills are you using? Do you have a healer in your party?
Tom Swift
You might also want to let us know what area you are in, what level your heroes are and, if you don't have 7 of them, then are you filling up the party with henchment.
Cause if you wound up jumping from, say nf, to eotn or KC with only a few low level heroes you're gonna be eaten alive.

First of all, yeah you got to be doing soemthing wrong or have missed something. what is wrong is kinda difficult to answer. but some things that can go wrong..
1: what is the area your trying to do and what mode??
2: what skills do you use and what profession are you?
3: what is the armor level (is it max?!!) your using?
4: what is composition of your party? meaning what kind of hero's/henchman do you use?
if you made "mistakes" in one of the above 4 matters, you could have what you desribe. to answer what correct answers would be, this would be what I had when i was just lvl 20..
1: area: the desert in ascalon. (wrong answers would be eotn, uw, doa, fow, deep, urgoz AND anything but normal mode, hard mode is nice to try out, but don't go there till you finished atleast 2-3 campaigns).
2: Well, I can't remember my skillbar from that time. but please post yours.
3: your armor level should be 60 for casters and sins, 70 for rangers or dervishes, and 80 for warriors or paragons, those kinds of armor are for sale in Kaineng city, the consolate docks-outpost and in boreal station (als in most outposts beyond that point and at the end of prophecy's).
4: As I was in the desert I could bring 6 people. It where 2 monks, myself (ele), 1 warrior, 1 necro and one other ele. Though opinions differ I used the following guideline for party compostion.
if 4 people are in the party allowed
a: 1 melee (warrior or dervish)
b: 1 healers
c: 2 casters
if 6 people are allowed.
a: 1 melee (warrior or dervish)
b: 1 healers
c: 4 casters
(one of the casters should be interupting or buffing the party, otherwise I would got for 3 casters and 2 monks)
if 8 people are allowed.
a: 1 melee (warrior or dervish)
b: 2 healers
c: 6 casters (atleast one should be a buffer or interupter)
The melee could be interchanged with a good amount of necro-minions or ritualist spirits.
(and yes, I know modern teambuilds do it differently by given more characters mixed roles)

1: go to Boreal station, at the exit there is an armourer that will give you max armour (well if you pay for it, if you have to buy materials it is bout 10k)
2: leave eotn and don't come back untill you finished atleast one campaign.
ps. If having trouble with money, use this trick:
1: go to great temple of balthasar
2: talk to tolkano and register your account
3: go to the high priest and talk to him bout anything
4: get 10 zaishenkeys by spending tournamentpoints (you got at step 3) at tolkano again.
5: sell those keys to other players (minimum should be 5.5 platinum/key, so for a total of 55 platinums)
-edit- cause we keep answering at the same time....
Hero's need time and skills before you can sue them. My advise is to start with only 2 hero's, lvl them up to max level and make sure your happy with their skills/runes, etc, then add 2 more and repeat. For the rest use henchman. They might look weaker, but they are not. They are designed for the area your playing in. Hero's are only better if you made them better
Showtime
Get Max armor. Spend some time setting up runes properly and after that your heros. So basically go read one of the guides because there is much to fix, and it needs to be done before you can do EoTN.

damn eotn is the best part of the game :P
o well time to travel then. and hope i manage to stay alive.
thnx for the answers

last question:
you say heros need to be lvl-ed, but it already says lvl 20. How can you see what lvl they actually are?

I had similar problems/issues. Check out PvXwiki for some great ideas for team building using heroes. Helped me tremendously.
also, max armor is a must. pricey yeah, but well worth the expense

If your heroes are lvl 20 (party window show their level) and running decent builds, then you can literally wand crap to death doing 0 damage and still win, even in HM. Therefore, I suspect your heroes are running shit builds. This is probably because you've not unlocked decent skills for them, and it's a major handicap to heroes for new players starting out. My advice is to focus on unlocking some decent skills for a few heroes and filling the party up with henchmen. Necromancer/Rit heroes are a good bet because you can run 3 very, very similar bars on them, so you limit the new skills you need to get. Half those bars will be heals/prots (which is where the rit part comes in) and there should also be at least one damage distraction skill ( spirit or minion). True, Livia is a pain to get, so it'll be 2 necros for a while.... but mesmer heroes can effectively run most necro bars, at least as a stop gap while you get some more skills.

Eye of the north is designed for people that played the other 3 parts over and over again, so it is challenging to new players. I know it is the best looking part with the best rewards. but wait with it till you can stand the heat.

I agree especially with all akelarumi said. You shouldn't be in eotn til you completed at least one campaign and learnt how to play, it's an expansion after all and it's built to be played kind as "endgame".
It's sad, now everytime someone makes a post like this with these problems you can tell at first glance it's someone doing eotn too early.
And I'm always of the idea that if your heroes haven't got decent enough builds putting in some henchies is better (you partially did it already but now idea how good your used heroes are too).

yes, get over to nightfall so you can unlock olias and run a mm....unlock some skills for your heroes--these are the 'people' fighting with you, if they have crapp skills they wont be effective at killing things...
next what weapons do you and your heroes have? max damage? you can get some nice collector weapons along the way in each chapter if you are strapped for cash.
do you have an elite skill in your bar (or your heroes?) --this is why we suggest finishing some of the chapters as you can get to some of the elites along the way (prophecies doesnt have elites until you get to the crystal desert).
dont push too hard, the game will still be here waiting for you when you are ready to tackle harder areas, enjoy the trip along the way!

If you are new to the game, I'd recommend going through one of the main campaigns before EotN. Also don't attack the Muursaats ^^

That said, I would strongly suggest taking the varied excellent advice of other posters and make use of the Campfire section for advice on you and your heroes' builds/armor/equipment. There is a stickied post in every subforum advising on the best way to rune and equip your chosen profession. The official GW Wiki is also an invaluable research tool.
In regards to armor, max armor for an elementalist is level 60. AR 39 armor is basically like smearing yourself with bacon grease, draping raw meat on yourself and wandering into a pit of starving feral dogs. You are the most vulnerable member of your party at that point and the enemy AI will automatically target you first. Depending on which campaigns you have and which port cities you have access to cheap max armor is available for about 5k (1k per piece including the headpiece), plus materials.
Other things you should check:
Do you have all your attribute points? At level 20 you should have 200. The last 30 are acquired in your toon's home campaign via two side quests.
How are you spreading out your attribute points on your skill bar? During the course of gameplay you'll unlock a variety of skills for your toon's primary and secondary professions. This doesn't mean however that you should have all of them on your skill bar. Ideally you should not be spreading your att points over more than two to three attributes max. One of these should always be your toon's primary attribute (for eles, it's Energy Storage). The same rule applies to your heroes.
How are you tackling the red dots you encounter? Are you making use of the compass, flagging, pulling and pinging? This is why it's suggested that players normally complete at least their character's starting campaign before heading to EotN. Everything up to level 20 is just a tutorial, designed to teach you the basics of gameplay. Nor is GW about gear....it's about having a good skillbar for yourself and your party, knowing what skills work together across professions and what doesn't.
In regards to heroes: unless you have spent real world money to buy the skill unlock packs, your heroes will only have access to skills your account has unlocked. Again, you will unlock ele and mes skills for your toon as you play through the game. Other skills come from side quests. However, to make the most of these "free" skills you should also make sure your toon is Ascended. After ascension, your char can change their secondary profession, which makes unlocking skills for heroes easier (and makes it possible to capture elite skills). The Factions and Nightfall campaign also offer "free" skills you can pick up for yourself and your heroes by spending hero skill points.
Also, what "mode" are your heroes set to? Some heroes come set to a default of "fight", which means they will attack any red dots that enter their aggro bubble. This is bad. Ideally, all your heroes should be set to "guard", except monks. The monks should be set to "avoid combat"....because if your monks are fighting they're not healing your party. In areas that allow for you to have two monks in your party you should also have one monk skilled as a protection monk, the other to healing.
