I Don't Believe It Can Be Done

Maybe I haven't secured good skills.

I've been playing for a while now and I have a lvl 20 (with a lot of skill points past 20 to spend). I haven't completed any campaigns. I've got plenty of heroes.

I decided I wanted to go get a particular skill. It's in Marthan's Grotto. I figure no sweat. It's not Eye of the North. I'll run on down there.

So I head out of Beacon's Perch with a 6 man. My best Necro, a Mesmer, a Monk, a Warrior, a Dervish, and me, a Monk/Mesmer.

Now on the top side of Beacon's Perch the mobs are 8 to 10 lvls. But heading out the other way, they are 22 to 24 lvls. Say wha?

I fight my way down to Dreadnoughts Drift and there in a valley are no less than 18 human type mobs, all 24s. No way I'm getting thru.

So I'm thinkin, what in the world could I have that would improve a 6 man to take on 18 24s that are all bunched. It's one thing if they come in as 3 six man waves.

There is no way to pull. I can't imagine I will ever have a group that will get thru there. So do I need a certain build? Do I need better skills for my heros? Or both?

Can anyone recommend what I should do to improve my play to get down thru these areas?

----------

And it's right after the entrance to the area. So my Necro's minions don't come with my group.

----------

I think the answer is just 'yes'.

I'll do some reading on team builds and what skills best suit a monk/mesmer.

cmon gw2. altho I never realized how much fun gw is.

The problem is that you are doing it wrong. By running to Marhan's Grotto you are skipping about half of the prophecies content. There is no way you should have to fight through all them, go through the storyline and by the time you get to marhan's grotto, you and your heroes will be fine.

You're doing it wrong, start with skills available in your location and later, after you pregress enough in campaign, capture the skill you want.

I do agree with all of above. This area is designed for experienced players in a party of 8. Best is to play the game through as intended.

-edit-: if you really want that skill, you might wanna do some PvP, and use balthasar points to unlock it. To use it on yourself in PvE you need a tome, regular tome are available for some gold from traders in Kamadan (afaik all below 1 plat).

You need infusion.
There are Mursaat and Jade Constructs in the area, and they will kill you within seconds without infusion.

You can get the Balthazar faction to unlock the skill doing Zaishen Training (PvE in the style of PvP) if you like. Maybe 15 mins for 2000 faction.

http://www.gwpvx.com/PvX_wiki Find some builds in the great category for heroes and henchmen.

Make sure you get your self at least a SoS Ritualist, a N/Mo Minion Master and a Panic Mesmer, and you can steamroll the entire game. You should aim to get a complete team build though. You can find the builds on the page!

If you do just the introductory PVP quests from the Great Temple of Balthazar you should get enough faction to buy any non-elite skill from a priest of balthazar. That will unlock the skill for all your heroes. If you want the skill for yourself, grab a skill tome. You can buy them from other players, get them as drops or buy them with z-coins.

Fighting your way south of Beacons is certainly something that can be accomplished, but what you're trying to do can be accomplished in much easier ways. Now, if you're after an elite in the Shiverpeaks, you may want to consider instead getting a "Drock's Run" from Beacon's perch. Assuming you can find a runner, it should cost around 1-2k max. Once you're there you have access to max armor, and the ability to use 8-man groups for those areas. Good hunting.

I vanquished all the way from Beacon's Perch to Dreadnought's Drift with only 4 heroes and controlling 2 characters (I have 2 accounts and 2 PCs), so yes it is possible. Was it easy? Nope but it is possible.

I had to use some PvE tricks and AI exploitations. I hide behind a boulder and used my pet to attack the group that guards the exit from Lornar's Pass to Dreadnought's Drift. The pet keeps dying but it doesn't incur DP so it wears them down eventually. I wasn't prepared before I started my vanquish as I was only using my old default team build. If I had a SS necro, that would be easier.

As for the huge mob in Dreadnought's Drift just outside the Lornar's Pass exit, you have to flag your heroes to retreat away from the exit down south when the going gets tough. Pull them gradually and retreat, eventually you would wear them down too.

Of course if you only needed a run from Beacon's to Forge, you can hire a runner to run you all the way there in NM which would be a lot easier.
