Or to be more accurate: what is involved in the Ascalon Campaign?

I had to take an involuntary break last time as my Working Situation changed and free time became something of a rarity.

So I'm hitting the HoM trail again, recently I made progress through Ascalon, I'm still looking at the "Nolani Academy" quest, I can see using the Guild Wars Wiki that this is the last quest in this line. Is that considered to be the last of the Ascalon Campaign or does the campaign take into account the Northern Shiverpeaks, Kryta content etc?

Ascalon is a region of Tyria, which is both the name of a continent and presumably the game's world, and Prophecies is one of the campaigns. Nolani Academy is indeed the final mission in that region, but there are still many left to complete the Prophecies campaign. If you want the campaign statue for HoM, you must complete the Hell's Precipice mission. Please clarify your question if this doesn't answer your inquiry.

I'm looking to get what I can out of the Hall of Monuments. I know it's a bit late in the day but I figured I'd see what I could get on top of the three "free" points that I do have.

I'd read somewhere that you got a Point for the different Campaigns, so I figured that I'd stick with the Prophecies for now. The only two problems that I was having was finding anyone my level to group with and actually having an idea of what I actually needed to do to get any additional points.

Sorry I wasn't clearer in my first post; looking back it does seem somewhat vague.......but then I don't know what I'm talking about.

You should go here for a list of things you can acquire and what you will get for all your hard work: Just put in your character name:

And if there is anything you're not sure of how to find, query the wiki, http://wiki.guildwars.com and you're sure to find something more about it

Ok, so I have all of the Campaigns, I paid for all of them not really knowing what I was actually paying for apart from maybe choice.

So I'm assuming going off that guide that I'm better off hitting Eye of The North first, the only problem is that I have no idea how to get there and make start.

Thanks for all the help so far guys, this is quite exciting.

You really can't go to North first: It's an expansion and you can't create characters there, and must be at least level 10 and reach a port city in order to pick up the quest to go there (which, in Prophecies, is Lion's Arch -- if you're at Nolani Academy, you're still 3 missions from there). But even once you get to LA, while you can surely do the quest and run to the Eye of the North outpost to round up the first 3 heroes, I wouldn't suggest bashing your head against a wall trying to push through that storyline right away. North was designed for established, experienced players, and thus the difficulty level is somewhat high. If you have no idea what you're doing, you could wind up pretty frustrated.

All of the accomplishments you attain while playing are retained, so you can put them in your HoM at any time (as long as you don't delete the character that did them first), so there's no rush to collect tapestries and get things recorded in the HoM right away.

I suggest sticking with Prophecies until you understand the game a bit better, then feel free to branch out as you feel comfortable (you can also travel to the other campaigns, Factions and Nightfall, as soon as you reach Lion's Arch, which might be a worthwhile detour to pick up a few more heroes (in Elona = Nightfall) and some max armor (in Cantha = Factions), and see if there are any useful skills you might need from the skill trainers.
You could even start in on those campaigns' storylines...but the plots may get a little confusing if you jump around a lot between campaigns (at least that was my experience as a continent-hopping newbie).

@Star Jewel, yeah I see what you mean. I think I'm gonna keep things simple for the moment and carry on through the Prophecies where I am.....at least until I can choose whether to make a move to the North.
It's not like I'm chomping at the bit to get this stuff, it's just a bonus distraction right now.

This is going to sound so cheesy but .. make another chr on nightfall and get the free heros , work to lvl 10 and you will gain access to eotn. But make sure you do nf primaries upto the point where both attribute quests are done then go eotn ( you get your 2 attribute quests quicker than you would in prophs via primaries.
When in eotn get the free heros from there and this may seema a bit of work but having heros can make your job alot easier. You can get a few ranks of eotn titles and use their pve only skills.Any time you can take the nightfall chr over to la - and either fight or get run to ascalon - fighting means going against foes that levels decrease the nearer to ascalon you get.

This is true if one has enough skills unlocked to put at least halfway decent bars on those heroes. New account with fresh heroes, the poor guy is better off with henchmen.

ETA: These two recent threads might be relevant.

Thanks guys, that's a lot to take in but then that's why I asked the question....because I'm clueless!

So I'm gonna have a read of those threads and try to work out what to do from here.

If I did go the NF route what would be a decent class to go with? I know that in some MMOs that there are classes that just die so easily and in GW I've only ever played a Necro/Mesmer to any real degree.

I posted this on another thread basically detailing how I went about beating the campaigns in the past 2 months (with help from people here in the forums like @Star_jewel).

Only thing I would add to that post is to start characters in all 3 campaigns (with different professions and secondaries) and get them to at least: Kaineng center in Factions, Command post in Nightfall and Lion's Arch in Prophecies this way you'll have extra cash and the possibility of buying more skills before reaching the 1 plat cap. Also these are the cities where characters from different campaigns "meet" so after this just pick whichever character you had fun with a use it as your "main".

Heh, so I'm at work and I see that the release is now in sight

Is it still possible to get any of these points before the end of August? My playtime is sorta restricted to only playing every other four days as I'm on a 4on / 4 off rotation (12 hour shifts).

Well...seeing as I'm a closet masochist I've just completed 30/50 in the HoM for a second time. I started back in March this year, and the second time took me less than a month to do. This second time I played as a mesmer/ necromancer, I think these professions synergise extremely well together if that helps. So if you had fun as a necro/ mesmer, it could be a good thing to stick with.

A lot of what Cancer777 wrote I'll agree with. I'd add more but...to be honest and I don't want to sound patronising but it might be overwhelming. I'm just saying that as back in March a lot of what I read went over my head and it almost put me off the game several times. The meta build he used I used too - http://www.gwpvx.com/Build:Team_-_7_Hero_Player_Support . It's awesome, really - with a couple of tweaks it can take on anything.

If you want to get some skill unlock packs and/ or mercenary slots that could make your life easier. Some of the heroes you need for the build can be annoying to get to, but it's not really needed. Skills like aura of the lich and panic I'd say just pvp to unlock them for your heroes, as they're good skills but you can capture them in the last Prophecies mission - and they'd be useful long before then .

So today was my first of four days off and I decided to have a look at the Nightfall content. Bearing in mind I only did about three hours of playtime I was able to hit level 7. What I was wondering is that when folks say "it takes this long to do stuff" do they take Side-quests into account? Also, I only have one Hero (Koss) so far, where do you get the other Heroes from, are they quest rewards?

If you follow the quest line in Nightfall, you get to a point where you need a certain rank in Sunspear and have to grind mobs, which takes forever. Getting to level 7 in itself doesn't take long.

Do bear in mind there are many "meta" builds out there that may suit your play style better.

I've seen guild mates in action with teams based around Physical damage and shouts for ignoring damage that blew my mind.

Also many high end mission are better with "gimmick" builds do search for them when the time comes.

Edit
About the slow progress in nightfall, by the time I ended the campaign I had level 7 in the sunspear title track and a full nightfall book which Im saving for a double point weekend to cash it in so I'm not advancing to level 8 until then. Point is, after doing the "small grind" you'll be close to getting that title so that's a plus (at least for me).

There is absolutely no grind for Sunspear rank, if you:

1. do every secondary quest. Don't forget to revisit outposts after completing each of the first 3 missions on the Istan island.
2. whenever you enter an explorable area, talk to every sunspear scout at each resurrection shrine you see and get the sunspear bounty. Don't evade enemies, kill every enemy in sight while you are doing your quests.
3. do every mission with master bonus

If you do this, your sunspear title rises automatically, so it is high enough once you get to the quests that require certain ranks. As a side effect, you also get enough money as a new player to be able to buy the maximum armor that is available at the Consulate Docks mission outpost.

Hehe, so another question....when folks talk about builds I'm assuming that they're referring to the whole team etc of Heroes. I mean do they spec Koss as Warrior/Mesmer etc with specific skills and then do the same for the entire team?

Our wiki is amazingly intuitive. It's always worth doing a wiki search on a term and see if it's already been covered. We actually have a page on "Build". Generally it's a term for the bar of 8 skills. We also refer to "team builds" which refers to the skill setup for the whole team (people or heroes).

And yes, creating synergistic builds for you and your team of heroes is an important (and fun!) part of Guild Wars.
