actually just look at q&a and you will see a bunch of newbies--peeps who want to 'learn the game' before gw2 comes out, so yeah, probably quite a few who are going to splurge for the skill unlock packs et.al.

Well, not everyone will leave GW when GW2 launches, and there will most likely be an influx of new players aswell, so saying the game is "ending" is rather silly.

They're limiting updates to basic maintenance and holidays, I believe. Automated updates, such as the Zaishen quests, will be unaffected because they're automated; they happen automatically.

I am secretly hoping that when this deal is over they will give us an event in celebration for the release of GW2. Such as double every title or drops, etc. I realize I shouldn't expect much, but at least something for those who are still getting titles. I am far done with all my titles, but I know there are a lot of "new" players working on them.

Meh, imo they should've had a sale when gw2 first went on preorder... back then you had the most interest/influx of people returning or new to the game getting ready for gw2 and with the date still undetermined and estimated to be far away people would be more willing to spend money...
Now? seriously? a month or so away from gw2... even if I needed another storage page I don't think I'd shell out money at this point.... esp not for skill unlocks or costumes at this point...

Tbh I didn't think they would ever put mercenaries on discount, but at this point anything can be. Oh well I bought teh complete pack ages ago anyway, and got all my char-slots-for-future when they were half price so...

So if one was interested in maximizing opportunity at this July Wintersfest thingy, I assume it requires vaettir or raptor farming? Except for Snowball arena, all other typical Wintersday quests are disabled (The Strength of Snow, etc), right?
