Noob in trouble!

Hi Guys
Im brand new to guild wars and ive done a lot of the early stuff but i rushed off into the ascalon foothills and now im struggling with clearing the Borlis Pass.
Any tips?
Normally, being a W/R, when faced with a large group i possision my party out of the way and draw a small group of the larger group away with an arrow, but when i try to do that here the target i hit runs away towards the rest of the group and then the whole charge me and i get DESTROYED!
Obviously besides reaching an extreme level with which grants the obvious perks of a higher hit points average etc i was wondering if you guys had any other tips?
Cheers

Hi,
Did you check the wiki walk trough? -> http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Borlis_Pass
There is no extreme level... Top level is 20, you will reach it about halfway through he campaign or 3/4 if rushing though content.
Which henchmen are you taking? if dying a lot make sure to take Alesia (healing) for surviving. Orion (fire ele) for AoE damage... I would also take Dunham and Reyna. You are a warrior so don't take any other warrior henchman.
Edit (Lina is not available on that mish)

I think a lot of veterans have "good" memories of that part (many of us got our asses kicked as well... but that was 7 years ago ).
The key here (if i remember it well) is pulling. Make sure you are not fighting too many mobs at once... you are a warrior (melee) so you are used to close combat, but if you do that there then you most likely attract more than 1 group.
So you need to learn to pull... make sure SOME mobs come to you instead of you running to the mobs. A simple (long)bow may help... make sure your team is far enough (but not too far ofcourse), pick your bow (you can equip multiple weapons) and shoot at one of the enemies (make sure that multiple groups are not too close to eachother otherwise you still get too many mobs). If done correctly then that group will come to you and you willl have an easier fight. Dont forget to switch back to your main weapon as the bow is only used to help you pull
It also helps if you know what the professions are of the enemies that you are fighting... some are melee, some are casters... some will fight close to you, some keep distance and some are healing the enemies. Thats something you need to recognize too and that kind of info will help you a lot when making decisions during the battle: often its killing the healers first which often makes the rest of the battle easier, but sometimes you want to kill some hardhitters first (to prevent you team gets easily wiped).
Good luck and dont forget to learn from your mistakes (we all have been there)
EDIT: i just noticed that you already tried a bow, but i think your timing may be bad.... keep trying (make sure you and the rest of your team is on a safe spot... that multiple groups arent too close to eachother and dont run forward to those mobs... let them come to you)

I think he is not talking about the mission but about the quest that leads to that mission outpost...

what level are you (are you about the same level, at least, of the henchmen?)?
and yes, those of us who were around 7 years ago do remember that part VERY well--
so get out your bow and pull a few enemies to you....and you can always run back the way you came (even thru the portal--they will all respawn though)...and with the flags now you can put your henchies waay behind you and see how far you can pull the mobs.

A longbow is fine but a flatbow usually works better for new players as the higher arc gives you a little more time to back up and, as a result, helps with the panic factor.
As mentioned you need to know your enemy and target the most dangerous first, the the next most dangerous and so on and so forth until you get to the least dangerous. For Charr, the Flamewielders/Firecallers are usually the ones you want to get first unless theres a shaman in the group. As a general rule you want to knock out the opposing healers first since the longer the enemy can remain alive the more pressure it will put on your party.
So focus your fire on Shaman and FlameW/Fire C's. Then you want to take out the mesmers (Mind Sparks, Chaots), followed by the Necro charrs...you can leave thw warrior and ranger charrs for last.
Also as mentioned you want to make sure that your party has the right mix of henchmen. The general inclination in 6 member parties for new players I think is to take 2 warriors when in fact, depending on skillset you may not need any warrior. When i play my rit, the only time when i take a warrior type is if im forced to take one because you need that hero in your party to do a mission. You should take Orion, Dunham and as many healers as you are allowed, usually upto 2 in the area your at if i recall. The last one may be anything.
If you are having problems definitely read the walkthrough or feel free to ask for help. My IGN is Dar Drakor. Nowadays im usually just on passing time doing Zaishen stuff or Wanted bounties so i should be able to help you.
If you have EOTN...i would suggest that as soon as you get to Ascalon...to go out and get Mox into your party...as well as take the jaunt into EOTN so you can get Vekk and Ogden. Would get you 3 level 20 heroes which will be better than any henchmen you can get for some time...and will allow you to use your hero flags on.
Regarding pulling...if they dont follow you that means you are pulling back too early. Youll need to stand your ground a little longer. Also multiple groups can merge. If you fire into a large crowd it is quite possible that more enemies can aggro than you can handle. Take your time and wait for them to separate before firing to pull.

Welcome to GW, Nemophish! Hope you're enjoying yourself.
Quick question: Are you having trouble with getting to Borlis Pass from Yak's Bend or are you having trouble with the Borlis Pass mission? The reason I ask is because proceeding from Yak's Bend trips up most people who haven't been through there before. The best way to get through to B.P. is to only take on one quest at a time in Yak's Bend. Many of the quests there have you going out and killing a specific mob or clearing a path, and those mobs spawn very close to each other.

Guys this has been fantastic help! Ive been to yaks bend already as when i first got into the ascalon foothills i thought it was important to keep moving until i could find somewhere i could easily fast travel to to save keep fighting the hydra and the boulder elementals.
Currently im at level 12, and wow i didnt realise the level cap was that low :/ is there still room for skill growth after hitting level 20 or is that really it? Also im defo a massive noob as i didnt even realise that each bow fired differently >.<
Im busy most of the day but will try and clear the pass again tonight and will post on here just how i get on :P
Thanks for all your help guys and Dra Darkor if i get stuck i'll give you a shout (Khymera Starslip is my IGN)
Cheers All
P.s - i bought the edition which includes factions and nightfall and the summoning stone that lets you create a fire imp (which has proved damn useful!) but my friend says that you can travel between games from certain areas is that right? Or firstly do i need to have created a character in the different games? Sorry if these are stupid questions ^_^

Good luck Nemophish,
I addition to all of the above doid you upgrade your armour at Yaks? The armour level and the right runes can make a huge difference to your survivability.
yes any char can travel to all the game worlds - the initial quests that let you do that are listed here
we had the same questions when we started

Tried to see if this tip was mentioned, might have missed so excuse me if it's double. The quests leading to borlispass have a stacking amount of enemy's on the same road (so every quest adds foes to he mobs). So it's best to not take all quests in yak's bend but take one, complete it and take the other (if you already took all, then abbandon some).
Quaker
Borlis Pass - it's been a while - is that after Yak's Bend? If it is, did you upgrade your armor in Yak's Bend? And isn't there a [skills] guy there too?
Cancer777
Don't be alarmed about the level cap. Progression in GW is different, a good skill bar is what dictates how you are and good equipment (armor addons) to support you skill build... and getting those skills/equipment means playing through content to have access to the skills. Also later on you will be able to "cap skills" which is basically killing bosses and stealing their "Elite skills" for yourself. Guess where the best Elite kills are?
So always measure your progress by your skill bar and armor/equipment. If you have too few skills, or if they do no "complement" each other go back to prior towns and check the side quests if they give a skill as a reward take them, the more skill the more flexible your bar will be.
One thing -that no one has mentioned/asked- (edit: Quaker asked) is your armor rating. I'm not sure about what armor you have available at that point but if you are still using your starter armor migth be time to get new armor. Armor does not drop from mobs you have to buy it or exchange trophies to collectors scattered around the maps.
So again tips are:
1. Always take a healer, do not take a second warrior
2. pull, pull, pull
3. Get better armor if you can afford it.
4. get as many skills as you can and read their description on how to use them.. ie. one skill might knock down a target and another skill might inflict a condition but only to knocked down targets, so you use them in the correct order and you get better results.
I know is disorienting at the beginning. I quit GW because I never bother to understand the mechanics (coming from Diablo 2 if I recall correctly) but when I returned and made the extra effort... Its a fun game to beat.
----------
Regarding this question.
Yes you can travel to other regions right after you reach Lion's arch and Elona (Nightfall) is a prime destination to get Heroes (better henchmen that you can give them skills bars )
BUT......
Heroes do not work well without good skills bars and Platinum and skill access will be a barrier... If you want to play Nightfall I recommend getting to Lion's arch and starting a second toon on nightfall this way hero progression will be more natural as you will get enough plat and skill access to improve them. After that you can return to your main and travel to nightfall to get the heroes.
Any skill that you get or buy on any toon is available for any heroes that you get, it doesn't matter on which toon. You may have noticed the "you have unlocked a skill" message whenever you got one... now any heroes that you get of the same class can use it, even heroes from other toons.
... there is a lot more information so again wiki is you friend -> http://wiki.guildwars.com/

Wow theres a lot to take in but i think ive just about got it. Well as promised i said i would update my progress.
Attempt Number 2 = Successful to begin with before falling on its epically fat face.
I change my bow and the pulling was working great, i upgraded my armour and found that my health was lasting a lot longer. I was able to effectively remove Mobs without to much trouble while the E/Henchman and the Mage supported my from afar and the healer giving me a boost as well as combining the bleeding and wounding skills i got i would inflict conditions on each foe with my fire imp as well and then my party would finish them off ^_^ (i guess i am leaning ). The thing that struck me was when the pulling worked but then they ran towards a large group and kinda 'recruited' them to come kick my level 12 ass. But it wouldnt have been to bad except the F%*&£ing mobs kept attacking the healer and i could heal and fight well enough at the same time, to add insult to injury i kept trying after dying and watched my health get lower and lower and lower LOL. I took a lot of stuff from the wiki as well as some of the great tips on here, the bow change, swapping my pulling tactic, re arranging my team and adding an elementalist not a fighter but it was the healer thing that shafted me.
I know its all because im new to this game and im still getting to grips with the mechanics and game play, i just dont want to come over as whiney bitch on here like you get on some forums, this game is to hard whine whine my character cant level quick enough whine whine etc but i just want to learn and progress because just from the little ive done i can already see what a game this is and hope that its only get get better the more i explore and do etc. But its just so annoying that the party seems to want to get itself destroyed LOL.
Sorry for the essay...>.< but in summary great advice guys i think ive nearly cracked the formula!! But....any more hints or tips ? feel free to wash your hands of my whiney noob self completely :P

the first part of prophecies (the part to started in) is ALL about learning! you will make mistakes, you will learn from them....you will gain skill and learn how to work with your team--its all part of it and you seem to be right on track, so keep plodding along. And yes we will be here to help out if you need advice.
advice: when you get to a new town check for a skills guy--new skills are usually a good thing, also there are quests that reward skills (and xp) dont pass these up! and always be on the look out for better armor (there is a wiki page that will tell you which cities offer new armor : http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Armor so make sure to check out your profession and see where the next armor is for you). ALSO when armor drops from foes it may be light blue or purple (or gold) in which case it will have runes or insignias--identify these!! some of those runes will help you out : http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Rune and http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Insignia and yes its a LOT to take in ....dont be afraid to try things out)
good luck!!

What level are you, Nemophish? There's always the possibility that you may have left pre-searing too early. Also, you could go back to the Ascalon area and mop up all the secondary quests that you've undoubtably missed - that might level you up a touch.
Oh, and don't worry about asking questions. Some of us old timers love helping because, in a way, we're re-living GW from a beginner's point of view, and that was when GW was at its best

Im level 12 snograt and I left pre-searing at around level 7 i think. And yes there are some ascalon quests i havent attempted yet. I think im gonnat try leveling up and completing as much ascalon stuff as i can then make another run at the pass. And if that fails....well then i guess ill just head back to the drawing board LOL.

Ah, L7 was about perfect - and 12 is fine for where you are. You'll notice that the henchmen are level 8 - that's always a good pointer.
I just popped into Borliss Pass on the off chance, but there was no W/R there ^_^
OH - one more thing: You did notice that the party size increased to 6 when you hit Yak's Bend, right?

Cowardly enemies like that are annoying OP. Mostly because in the middle of a fight you can't flag heroes/henchies in time (at least I never can) to not follow them into another squad of enemies. Just keep focusing on the healer/monks if it happens. I used to keep attacking the closest enemy to me when I first started not realising that the monk enemies were healing them while I did

SUCCESS!!
This morning after about an hour of different startagies i cleared the borlis pass! Not only this ive cut a massive arc across the rolling ascalon foothills and ive arrived at Katya gates not before picking up a couple of extra henchmen at beacons peak i know have six LOL. How big CAN the party get? Ive set myself the next goal of pushing on to lions arch and then ill go back through the previous areas and mop up additional unfinished side quests.
Its Official....GW has become my life .... and im not even sorry!

Make sure you take the correct exit out of Beacon's Perch - if you die in under 10 seconds it was the wrong one
The maximum party size is eight, with just a couple of special places where it's 12.

yeah i took the way out that i came in and headed towards griffons something. and ahh right thats cool. Do the henchies ever change cos atm ive got chance to have a brawler, a necromancer, a healer, a figher, a mage, an archer and enchanter but someone said its possible to have to healers etc. Does the range of henchies to choose from vary according to how far you've progressed?

Yes, there are other henchmen available as you progress (When Lina becomes an option, take her! Alesia is much better when she's in the party too.) Just keep an eye on who is available in each town you come across and try different ones that you encounter. Also later on, you're party size will reach the maximum of 8.

Hey there and welcome.
I am not much far ahead of you, started a month or two ago and only finished the Prophecy campaign today (bit of self congrats on the way)
Yes as you progress you will get more choice of henchmen, and up to 8 with you in a group.
Like others suggested, I found it helpfull to go to Nightfall as soon as possible to start collecting heroes. One nice thing you get with heroes, is not only customising their skill bar but also the first 3 heroes in your group have their own flag, so you can place them individually. this can come in really handy.
you may find some good info on the replies to my original post ("starting GW now?"), when I was desperate for info. Also got some good help back then.

I would in general disagree with the idea that it's not worthwhile to upgrade your armor. In fact, I would say exactly the opposite - upgrade your armor AL whenever possible. For new players, it helps to make everything a little easier. And, given how the gold rewards scale up as you go along, there's no great benefit to saving that early gold either.
But, to each their own - whatever yanks your chain - etc.

Hey there and welcome.
I am not much far ahead of you, started a month or two ago and only finished the Prophecy campaign today (bit of self congrats on the way) Yes as you progress you will get more choice of henchmen, and up to 8 with you in a group. |
GODh
Dont forget to use your hero flag. This also works for henchmen, but then only the 1st button... it prevents that your henchmen move too much away from their spot.
Downside of this button CAN be that your henchmen are clusterd (close to achother). An enemy with AOE (arial of effect) damage, like an elementalist, can cause a lot of damage to them that way... but if that happens you always can move that flag again to a safer spot.
----------
Heroes are like henchmen, but you can customize them (add runes and insignia's to their armor, give them better weapons, make their skillbuild). If done correctly they work a lot better than henchmen, but making them perfect is often not cheap... for new (and usually poor) players it can be better to keep playing with henchmen for awhile.

Edit
Forgot about M.O.X! once you are out of the main "port cities" (Lion's Arch, Kamadan or Kaineng City) you will see a GOLEM (looks like a robot) called M.O.X. it will join you only, if you are level 20, simply by talking to it.

Yes the guy in Yak's Bend has the same AL armor as Corwen - but only if you got the more expensive armor from him and not the cheaper stuff from him or the other guy.

Can't be bothered to search the wiki again, but I'm almost certain that the armor available in LA is still the same rating as the expensive Ascalon set and the Yak's stuff. In retrospect, maybe they could have made each "waypoint" armor better by 5-10 AR than that available at previous stages - but they didn't. It's irrelevant to old hands like us because we tend to do crazy stuff like finishing the game in starter armor, but what the hey

As your warrior is a native Prophecies character, speaking to Lionguard Figo in Lion's Arch will give you a quest that takes you to Kamadan to pick up some initial NF heroes. The link from Cancer777 has a chart halfway down the wiki page that tells you what heroes to pick up from where. The first "set" you'll pick up in NF will be Koss, Melonni, Tahlkora, Dunkoro and, a bit farther up the path from the others, either Sousuke or Jin. There is also an option to pick up a necromancer hero if you can find someone in Kamadan who can "ferry" you to the mission outpost next door called Consulate Docks. You don't have to do any missions in that outpost but Dinja in CD has a quest to let you pick up Olias. All these heroes (except Sousuke/Jin) will be level 15 when you get them.
As noted by others, heroes can be a great help, but usually only when they are properly skilled, runed and armed with weapons. Since they are customizable, that is your "job". For skills at least, it's usually recommended that (if you haven't spent real world money in the in-game store on skill unlock packs) you temporarily roll toons of other professions and play them for a bit. This will unlock some additional basic skills that you might be able to use to flesh out your hero skill bars. Later, once you get about 3/4 of the way into Prophecies, you'll have the option to change your warrior's secondary profession. This is handy because there are skill quests that also reward additional skills for that secondary, which if you can't use your heroes will. At that point you can try out all the other professions as secondaries (500g per change) and unlock more basic skills.

MOX is actually obtainable outside these cities by any toon that is level 10 or higher (not just level 20 toons). Though except for Kamadan, by the time you get to the other cities you're usually well past level 10 . MOX has the advantage of being already level 20 from the get-go....though like all heroes he'll have an incomplete skillbar.

My first few characters through Prophecies did exactly that - and struggled for money all the way! It's hard to imagine struggling to find the money for a 75g/piece armor set, but I think we've all been there!

Once you reach the major port cities in each campaign (Lions Arch for Prophecies, Kaineng Center for Factions, Kamadan for Nightfall) there is an option to travel to the other campaigns/continents -- cross-campaign travel article on wiki is here.

Ok cool beans, yeah ive managed to grab MOX he was waiting for me just before i went into lions arch for the first time and, this is sad, i remember seeing him on some pamphlet i got inside my game case and decided to go see if he was anything and important and BOOM this noob got himself a robo-hero LOL all fun and games. Also...and this is just a side question but does the availability of money dropped by mobs or stuff to sell to gain more wonga progress as with area and level etc ive notice a slight increase as ive moved through different areas but i was just wondering how high the grade goes. Im sure theres a wiki thingy out there but im still struggling with navigating that mess of information LOL.

Yes the rewards do get better, the only advantage of Cantha is max armor right away.
The best thing to do right now is:
1. Go to Lions Arch
2. Go to Cantha or Eye of the North or wait untill you hit the Consulate Docks (imo Sunspear is the best looking warrior armor in the game) and get max armor, this will save you a lot of money
3. Go to EotN and the hall of monuments and get the 3 easy heroes
4. Use the heroes to go to Night Fall and get the 4 heroes
5. Keep playing NF until you get the option for a ranger or an ele, get the ranger
6. Make the ranger a rit and buy some spirits skill from the sunspear trainer, even if you can't get a lot of spirits and elites, spirits help and with max expertise the rit skills cost nothing
6. Keep playing until you get to the Consulate Docks (you can get max armor here if you haven't found one you like yet), talk to Dinja to get the Olias quest, but DO NOT take the mission here, you will lose Koss.
7. You can take the Zenmi quest, assassin heroes aren't that useful but you can get her for completion sake plus there is a decent critical agility/barrage build that causes a fair amount interruptions.
Now you are ready to beat the rest of the game.
If you can't get the max armor, the cities of Bettletun and Bergen Hot Springs have the next level of armor.

Cheers to all those who helped and advised Im sure there will be more noob questions for you to remedy |
You in a Guild yet? Always good to be in a decent one. It negates the 'Game is Dead' theory, I always have an active Guild/Alliance chat so even when I end up in low player outposts I never feel like I'm there alone
Ps. Plus it's game advice on tap.

@ Kook~NBK~....doh, you're right. I've forgotten what a nightmare that particular "getting to NF" quest is for a low-level or newish player... >.<
Er....I'm not an expert on this and the OP didn't mention if he has rolled a rit character to do so...but will there be any additional rit skills available from the SS Skill Trainer if he hasn't unlocked any on his account? Also....rangers have a low energy pool. Even with Expertise maxed those rit skills WILL still cost some energy. Specifically (tho I could be wrong)...any of the weapon or item spells since Expertise only affects binding rituals.

The point is that Ranger spirit spammers don't use weapon/item spells, just spirits. The skill availability is a different matter - it will suck.
The most important skill - SoS - isn't available until halfway through Factions, so all in all a spirit-spamming ranger hero is pretty much no-go for a beginner.
I hesitate to bring up the subject of skill unlock packs, but man does that simplify GW
