Ranik

I was spending far too much time creating character names for my GW2 characters and had the most problem finding a surname for my human character. I eventually just began pursuing the wiki hoping for inspiration and came across Fort Ranik. Ranik works well with my character's first name and I think I might adopt it, but I was curious as to the history and lore behind Ranik. I'm assuming it's named after someone. A general? King? Noble?

I tried searching these forums, as well as GW2 Guru, and both sets of wikis and got nothing more than Fort Ranik is a mission/outpost. Lord Darrin is seen in both pre and post searing versions of Fort Ranik, but doesn't say if the fort is his command or why he is there. I was wondering if those who have much better knowledge and experience (you guys) knew anything about why this fort is named Ranik.

Just googling "Ranik" only leads back to the wikis, a business, and a goblin merchant from WoW. So it doesn't seem to be some allusion to a real-world location/person/event.

We don't really know much about Fort Ranik - all we really know is what the outpost descriptions (both pre and post) say, as well as a bit from Lord Darrin.

It's a fort that was used to train recruits during the Guild Wars, during pre-Searing's time it was having issues with bandits/royalists, and it fell during the Searing and the Charr Invasion.

Ranik was probably just some name chosen for it.

Interestingly, the pre-Searing dialogue for Lord Darrin is missing from the wiki...

I can't answer your question I'm afraid. However, I will say this: recently there was a similar question going around about the reasons behind the name of Lion's arch. Apparently, some industrious gamer tracked down the A-net employee who named Lion's Arch and asked him. Since no one seems to have ever really wanted to know the answer to your question (at least enough to get a-net to comment on it) you might take the same approach. I'd be curios to know as well... there is a ton of lore out there that people at A-net have devised but never made public/canon.

Ranique (or Rani in hebrew) is a female name wich means Singing Queen. Thats the closest I could come to some kind of explanation of the meaning. (Hey maybe Fort Ranik is reference to the popband Queen). But to know what it means you should try and get into contact with the developer who got up with the name. Maybe sent a letter to Arenanet with the question and the requist to delay it to the right person. (you could email it but its my experience when you take the time to print it, buy stamps, etc, a company feels more sympathy and you have more change of getting an answer).
