Hi Folks
I used to play Guild Wars and I am considering re-starting...but..
I have only a mobile internet connection...not a landline...so I cannot play with others due to lag.
My question is:
Since the game world is instanced...will I be ok to play solo?
Or will the low quality of my internet connection also affect solo play?
Thank you
Q about poor internet connection

I work for a phonecompany at the support department. It depends on the local quality of the mobile network but general spoken the speed should make it possible for you to play guildwars with others. The amount of data that needs to go over the line isn't a lot and guildwars plays through an old 65k analog modem wich is (not by coincedence) the same speed at wich the lowest quality of mobile internet works. I have played the game (with others) many times when either my landline was temporarely out or (note to my boss, pls look away) at office on boring sunday's. So I'm kinda curious what problems you encounter when playing with friends. The only problem I can think of is loading times of a zone. This can easily be fixed by running the game with the -image command line argument. see http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Comma...guments#-image. This boots the game with the order to load all zones and area's on your hard disk. That way the zone isn't loaded when you are with friends playing. Make sure you remove the -image option after your done. Off course using voice over IP solutions like vent or teamspeak to play and talk with your friends won't be possible on slow lines (actually slow air^^).
To answer your question directly. If you can't play with friends cause the line is too slow you can't play the game succesfully. There is no a lot of difference besies the fact that heroes don't complain bout you lagging behind.

I was hoping that if I was in an instance solo, then the speed of my connection would not be an issue, since everything would be happening on my own computer...and there would be minimal data transfer to the server.

It all depends on the area you live and the telephone masts. I use a 3g mobile dongle to play GW1 and GW2 and so far my connection is on par with virgin broadband i can match its speed and I don't suffer with any lag at all

Yeah, while I was homeless I played Guild Wars 1 over my mobile's 3G connection. There was some noticible delay in-game between when I ordered a skill use and when it actually happened, although nothing too unbearable, and otherwise the game ran smoothly and I did several vanquishes successfully during that time.
So my opinion would be that it's probably okay; If you prepare for it. Leave the split-second work like healing or interrupting to your heroes and concentrate on general stuff like ranged DPS or passive support via Shouts/Chants or Spirits, and you should be pretty fine.

Guess there's only one way to find out.
Thank you folks for replies
