Do people still play GW?

Many people quit long before GW2.

That said, yes. Doomsday came and GW1 is still there. It's not as active as it used to, but it still has a die-hard fanbase that loves the game like the first day.

Hmm okay. Reason I ask is because I have all of the GW games and was considering playing through it.

Be prepared to "solo" most of the game (that is - you, plus heroes and/or henchmen).
That was true before GW2 was released and is probably even more true now.

Hmm okay...I think I have a few characters already at 20(IIRC that is the cap level) so it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

This game has indeed a lvl-cap (aka max lvl) of 20. But unlike other games that isn't the goal. Getting to level 20 is considered by many the end of the tutorial. It means you know the basics of the game.

The goal is different by many but to become a very good player one should imo:
- Unlock as many skills they can get not only for themselfs but also for your heroes.
- get all heroes unlocked and at level 20.
- experiment and find optimum builds for yourself and your heroes (or get a team build made by someone else on the internet).
- get max weapons with perfect stats for your build for both you and your heroes.
- get a good setup of insiginia's and runes for your heroes and yourself.
(keep in mind many people are content wich getting a reasonable amount of the above, when I say perfect I mean good enough for your own standards and play the game wich near optimum efficincy.

For the rest the goal depends a bit on your personal wishes.
Some people are content in playing through the main storyline in normal mode. Others want to do as many titles as they can. There are also people who want to speedclear certain elite area's to get a special elite armor set (chaos gloves or obsidian armor) or get special weapons like tormented weapons.

A very very good description. Should you encounter missions/things you can't overcome, it is most likely because you haven't paid enough attention to one or more of the things akelarumi mentioned. If that doesn't help, check the guildwars wiki (not wikia, wiki).

You might also want to join an active PvE guild, it is nice to chat around in guild/alliance chat when you are out and about with just your heroes/henchmen. Besides, you can ask them for help and advice (try to check wiki first when you have questions though, I answer 90% of the questions in Alliance Chat with; ''Hey I heard about this new website, it's called google.com, check it out!'').

Furthermore, I advise you to just get going and do whatever you feel like doing. I've been doing exactly that for 6 years and I still enjoy playing every minute.

I too have recently decided to play through all of the titles, a decision made prior to my knowledge of GW2. Regardless, hit me up and we can knock out some quests in Prophecies if you're so inclined. Vairn Monok, M/Me; though I suspect you'll outpace me soon enough when classes start back up in a few weeks.
