Automated Tournaments
  • Automated the distribution of gold trim for the Monthly Automated Tournament.
  • Automated the monthly selection of maps for the Automated Tournaments.
Weekly Bonuses
  • Weekend events are now weekly bonuses, lasting a full seven days and changing on Mondays.
  • PvP and PvE weekly bonuses now run on separate rotations.
  • Added new PvE weekly bonuses that will appear in the coming months.
Codex Arena
  • The skills in The Codex are now on a weekly schedule, changing on Mondays.
General
  • Foreman the Crier has been added to all major outposts to announce currently active weekly bonuses and festival events.

Lots of changes there....not sure what they will 'add' to the weekly events now. (the weekend event for this weekend: lucky...will go until monday and its FOUR times the 'usual' rate!)

Wonder what the new bonuses will be.

Also is it bad that I got excited when I saw it was more than a one-line update?

This movement towards more automation is a nice thing. Perhaps it will allow what's left of the live team to concentrate on more pressing skill-related issues that have long been simmering. *cough*Paragon*cough*

This surprises me. Not the automation changes, but that they actually make real changes to the game. Creating a new form for weekly bonuses, and new bonuses itself.
They even took a bit time to comment:

Quote:
May 16

It's hard to believe that there's been more than eight years of Guild Wars. So much has happened since our release in April of 2005: two additional campaigns, an expansion, two major live story arcs, new festivals, new content, countless new features, and quality-of-life improvements have been added to the game. The change has happened so naturally over time, it's hard to believe how stark the difference is between when the game first launched and how it stands on the live servers now.

Over time, our focus has shifted to updates that not only help maintain Guild Wars but help the game maintain itself. With this focus in mind, we'll no longer be releasing any new content for the live game except in support of automation. Our goal is to get the game to a place where it can continue to run and be available to all of our fans. We have a lot of love for Guild Wars—it's the game that made us what we are today—and we want to continue sharing it with everyone!

I want to make sure that players correctly understand our intentions behind these changes and the overall push for automation. As I've said, we want the game to be in a place where it's able to take care of itself. While we will not be producing new content, the Live Team will still be around to perform critical fixes for crashes or other serious issues. We want to support the players who made us successful by ensuring the game provides the best service possible without constant supervision and attention. Reducing the need for manual intervention makes it easier for us to keep Guild Wars running in the years to come.

i made the suggestion not long ago on facebook, to put pve AND pvp weekends together.... now they did that AND did it for a week

GW wont be dead for a long time eh?

Bonuses for all week vs weekend only has been asked for a long time by those who can't play on weekends, I'm happy to see it come true. And also splits between pvp and pve. Maybe it's the time I can get enough kurzick points to get the elite armor for my ele, since there's no way I can buy all that amber :P

On the other said...how can they say they love the game? After what they're doing to it all this time and while saying they're only gonna put automation in it for the time being? They always make me so sad and angry at the same time...

The "extra luck" event of this week increases by four times the chance to get keys/ lockpicks, unlike the old weekend version which only increased that chance by three.

Reading that they're definately not doing anything else with this game sucks. The week long events imo are a way of speeding up titles people want to do for HoM to get them out of this game into GW2 or just off the server period.

I was really hoping they'd wrap up the Evennia situation and add the final planned content for NF.

what he said.

Its a cop out---'we dont want to do any more work on this, everyone should move on to our great uber wonderful game so we want to make sure everyone gets their HOM's full quick so they arent dividing their time between these games'

I think they should have learned a VERY long time ago, that that just aint gonna happen....for example: pre searing, everyone should move out of it and onto the 'real' game, however, there are people who STILL havent moved out of that area (anet did get the idea and made it more ...er, profitable, to stay in pre), everyone should move to pvp after finishing the final mission ....er, no, I, for one, hate pvp and have no intentions of playing that way, so they created 'end game content'. So you think they have learned that people just arent going to do what anet wants them to do! People are going to continue to play guildwars even with anets new baby that they want everyone to love and play, just aint gonna happen.
I would suggest they try to make those people happier like they did with the pre searing people, the pve only people, etc. (they did nothing for the pvp only people--that should be addressed as well). It would make business sense to keep as many people happy as possible without pissing too many off (that is NOT good for business!).

ah well, they wont read my ramblings, and since they basically insist that there was no game before gw2 I doubt much else will get done, pitty since they dont see the long term.

Actually while I would love to see more development in the game, I do think this update was better than nothing. Depending on what the *new* weekly bonuses might be, it might actually bring a bit fresh air into the game.

And I'm still optimistic that eventually even some ArenaNet staff might get nostalgic and try take up the project again.

Question: If they released a "GuildWars 1.1" where all graphics and sounds have been updated to more modern standard (but still with settings to cater all from vintage computers to powerbrick computers), would you buy this update?

And if they made a restart of Guild Wars using same new engine on new servers, would people want to start out all new fresh? Maybe two new servers.. one old school Prophecies only, and one with all current contents. Either server would be completely isolated from original, but still be the same game just on an updated engine.

There is nothing wrong with the GW graphics or sound. That's not what people want when they're asking for an update, certainly not something I'd expect or be willing to pay for.

There'll probably be an increase of players throughout the weeks for titles but they'll also burn through the events/titles at least twice as fast and then have no reason to return. That's a sobering thought for sure.

I'd love for you to be right and they make a choice to complete content and skill revisions that they stated they would.

Graphical updates... this one was supposed to be in the works as far back as the Eye of the North release. I've mentioned this before about there being a video where a bearded monk is in the burning forest in Sacnoth and they demonstrate the updated graphics with the fire and heat and whatnot. They stated in that video that they were going to go back and put these kinds of updates throughout the existing games.

GW 1.1? If they offered the update for like $10 I might go in for it.

As for a restart on the GW2 engine? I'd have to say no because then all of the new additions I don't care for will be implemented ruining the game we're currently playing. I don't feel the need nor do I care for the swimmimng and jumping. From my understanding the water combat is done poorly at best for certain classes and jumping seems to be centered around jumping puzzles which I don't have an interest in.

The only way I'd fully back any type of upgrade (which let's face it, isn't going to ever happen) is if Anet absolutley kept it the same game with the same classes and skills. Zero tolerance on changes to mechanics or gameplay.

bummed they didnt add heroes or henchies to pvp and that no paragon splits were done for pve. i would have just reverted paras back to their launch skills for pve and kept pvp paras the same. rangers never got any love either? odd. oh well, i saw that they added the events to be week long. people love the HoM rewards in GW2 for sure. People are always rockin that armor and some of those weapons are my fave skins in the game.i'll always miss gw1 after they turn the lights off permanently, but i tried to go back to it a few weeks ago, and i was shocked at how a game i had spent thousands of hours in suddenly felt archaic as far as the controls went. i think it still looks wonderful, but man, i had no idea how old the mechanics would feel after playing gw2 and ToR.

About the engine changes stuff...did you all remember when they said they were discontinuing older OS because they wanted to improve the game in a way that wasn't allowed by supporting those? Yeah it absolutely happened...

About suggestions: may be personal tastes but I find GW2 graphics pretty bad looking and not even advanced, I like this game's ones much more. Starting anew? No thanks, I'd never do that. All those years would be deleted, at that point I don't think I'd want to play anymore.

Also just leaving this here if anyone wants to comment on it

They only said they wouldn't be developing new content, nothing about skill updates in the future. Unless they consider skill updates new content we still have a very, very thin shred of hope they will come through on future skill updates... Please? :P I just wish they'd come out and tell us one way or another.

I think they were quite succinct as to what they meant: we are doing NOTHING NEW for guildwars, unless there is a major bug/crash at which time we will fix that.

I think a lot of the comments are amusing.

I don't find Guild Wars 2's graphics to be bad, but armor and character style I do. Very clear pandering to WoW players.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I'm happy about the announcement.
I never expected any additional content after GW2 came out and I'm happy they kept their word and will leave GW running as long as people want to play it.
Just wish they'd done this before the teleport nerf a while back.
As for skill updates - couldn't care less - dont play PvP, never have, never will.

I don't play pvp either, but what does that have to do with pvp? I'd like my paragon to be any use in pve, and the fact pve is doable with any build is not really a consolation.

Or your reading comprehension is low. One of those two.

It's really sad that there are so many interesting skills in GW but less than half of them are actually of some use. Yes, you can play GW with any empty skill bar, relying on your heroes/henchmen, but it seems like a massive waste of potential.

At least now we know that they won't nerf any other skills into oblivion or delete any more mechanics, like teleportation.

No, it's definitely the first one - the statement makes no sense in the context of the game. But hey, feel free to attack the poster and not the argument.

skill updates are for BOTH pve and pvp--they affect them both!
so even if you dont pvp a skill update (may) change how your pve skills work too.

I am glad they announced this as well, however, I am not happy that they did this is such a fashion, though with their normal way of telling us stuff I guess it was along that same vein.
and yeah....should have done this before the teleportation nerf

as for the graphics of gw2--bleh, the artwork...uhm, guess it was a slight improvement, but the characters, armor etc ---YUK! (some of the 'armor' is just hideous--I mean, one of them looks like a reject from a circus!--and that is one of the better ones!, I thought that they would have made some improvements since the beta--I was wrong, so so glad my computer didnt want to play that game),.

Just did a quick test run, was expecting some kind of buff icon for the weekly bonus as it will last you 7 days, but realized it's just same bonus system as before just lasting longer.
7 wurms outside Boreal Station gave 2 lockpicks, might be worth doing a few runs after all.

will probably do a run or two tomorrow when I have time (though the first 40 minutes of doing eye I usually dont get drops...so I might log in and let my toon sit just outside the door),

I am hoping for an event that will help with chests running--like the golden eggs, as opening 10k chests is something that will take me the next 3-4 years to accomplish (have done 5100 so far...took me 5 years to get that far), not to mention just dont have the cash for all those keys/picks to open said chests....

and everyone has always wanted a triple dye event too...(I certainly dont need it).
so we can hope for some nice new events....though I think they they will just change the names (for the most part) of the weekend events and buff them a bit like the current one.

and thinking about it...I think the reason for the change to weekly has more to do with the players of gw2 possibly NOT playing on good weekend events in gw1 (thats MY opinion )

Skill balance is important in PvE as it is in PvP, but in different ways.

No. Guild Wars looks and sounds fine. The problem is a lack of players, not the game itself. Well, the game has its own problems - massive power creep has killed difficulty - but the lack of players is the main issue. And not even so much because the game is empty, but it's kind of RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOed up some parts of the economy, specifically traders, which now have some pretty weird prices.

the community is smaller in all MMo's now, cuz there's alot more MMO's to try out now
GW2 would've been bigger and GW wouldnt be update-less if there were not so many of em, like when GW was new

they could bring more to GW to make more people happy, and to keep GW as a source of income, if they would give GW more, like expansions without being bridge to GW2, to avoid GW being too much toward GW2

the automated stuff is ok, but a game without bigger updates will lose after a while

so i'd say: enjoy GW as long as you can
and with the automated stuff, we can do stuff with more fun, cuz now we have reasons to be more active, and anet wouldnt need to take a look at that part

lets see how they save GW, or let it die for real from now on

i love being able to get double points or stuff every week, the whole week, so i enjoy GW with that, i just wish for some suggestions to come true (especially proph missions having exploreable versions.... but thats in another topic, check that topic out for that)
