Had some fun today. A guy asked for help doing a low level ranger mission so I helped him out.
I gave some advice ... helped him name his pet ... got him set up with gear and armor. Took the hit on the virtual wallet and drained my small hoard of items but it was fun. He did'nt think his character was all that good [Necromancer/Ranger] but when I told him things I have seen done by Necromancers, I could tell by his typing he was getting stoked Also I found a quest I would not normally have found for 2000xp running him around.
Funny thing about it was he's a Canadian too and he lives all the way on the West Coast and I'm on the East Coast.
I say take a day. Find someone who needs help and is new show em around and do the same. Not everything in this game should result in getting an 'apple for a barrel'. Make sure they 'pay it forward'.
Cheers

I help mostly anybody I can, especially people who are just asking directions. All you do is give them a couple sentences of instruction, and they're on their way. besides, I ask directions from time to time, and this is my way of giving back i suppose

Yeah, helping people is fun, though some people act weird when you offer. Oh and what quest was it you found? History of Ascalon was the one I ran across helping someone, was nice and easy for 2k xp

Helping GOOD people is rewarding as you will feel you have accomplished something.
Sadly it's not easy to understand whether a person is good or not without partying with him. I always reward good party members with something. A dye or maybe an item (usually a dye). Thankully good people in GW are not as rare as some think/

That's pretty much how someone kickstarted my character. It's not that hard to find good people, I think my good-bad ratio would be 10-1 by now. Not a bad score if you ask me.
When you help a new hero there's also a big chance he'll do the same in the future for other new hero's. I know I have.

F*ck yeah helping is fun! I tutored a kid (must have been 9 or 10) for 3 hours. He started at L2 and left me so he go to bed at L4. Showed him as much as I could/knew, dragged him around to some of the furthest places you can go pre-sear (although north of the wall was too much for him, and even me), and tried to teach him about a secondary profession (although it took about half an hour total to finally make him understand the concept, broken up into little 5 minute interjections while exploring). He never asked for any items, and I tried to give as little as possible and as little battle help as possible (just making sure that he didn't die) so that he could learn parts of the game on his own.
I wouldn't mind doing it again, but maybe earlier so that I'm not doing it until 2:00AM Sunday morning.
