Serial Hacker Around...
Chelsealuvsya
Hello,
Many of us have watched good friends get hacked and seen their items sold in game by the likes of X and others who are presumably one of his 20+ alts. I haven't seen a thread on this, but I feel like there should be, and this is a general game discussion, so I reasoned it should be here.
The conclusion is that something needs to be done - but I doubt it will.
The one connection between everyone that has been hacked that I know of is they are ALL guru users. I haven't heard of one non guru user. The reason for that is probably that the hacker searches posts that have peoples IGN's in them. And then he has the answer to your security question. If it is possible to hack guru and see your email address (Which I am sure it is for an expert) you're using for your guru account and it matches your guild wars account, now he has your IGN and your email. All he needs to do is generate your password using some program.
Anyways, I just wanted to give this as a warning because this is getting rampant these days. It seems that every week I log in and someone new that is rich (like 1000a+) is getting hacked. And for every rich person, I bet there are 100 not rich people being hacked that no one notices because with the rich person, they likely have items that are 1 of a kind that can be attached to a specific person, like an unded kanaxai.
In my opinion, the solution to this problem is to either:
1. Anet needs a new security question.
2. Guru needs to hide email addresses better.
As I said, I just want to make this a public warning. I am not blaming anyone. I just want people to be careful because many people don't realize. Feel free to turn this into a discussion or to correct my statements if they are wrong.
I would love to hear from anet because me and many of my friends are worried they are next. (yes I am an alt, so I may be your friend on my main, I am using this alt to make this post for security's sake)
Edit: I changed his name to X. But if someone wants to know, it can be reposted or something. Is it ok (Guru mods) for me to post it?

From all my friends who were hacked - NONE of them was a guru user. What does it prove? I think you try to blame the wrong people in the wrong place. Secondly why would someone bother hacking anyone in GW1 at the moment? Is anyone still selling GW1 gold? I doubt it. If yes then people buying are the ones who most probably will get the hack but not for their game gold but for their real money.
There was once something related to one of the fan sites (not this one) losing data and that they were suggesting to change the passwords for the game. Anyway it was like 3-4 years ago and anyone changing passwords regularly is more or less safe. Search for the hacked threads you will find some info in the archive.
BTW a few people got hacked since they followed the links in the spam mails pretending to be from Anet. I get those mails since 7 years already. So they know my game email address and knew it even before I created any account on any fan site. I get those emails for other games too. I never get emails related to the games I do not own. You see? I use bunch of email addresses and never get the spam for the game not linked to it. They know it. How? In my opinion someone just sold the copy of the user database at one moment in time. Or they checked who gets the game newsletter adressees or they do simple packet sniffing or.... etc etc etc...
Just follow a link in such email and your account is done.

They need to have some anti hacking tool but most don't do it game unless they find out your pw and I thought it was agasint The Guru's policy to post your ign.
I would be carefull of what you download for the game.

its an old thing, that hackers are busy getting accounts, which is why i never open mail from Anet or NCSoft
but its good to be reminded once in a while, as its important
and Age: its agaisnt the rules to put other people's names on the forums
how else do people trade from here?

Even though Guru's staff and owners are apathetic to the game, I'm sure they would still patch and keep the database secure.

go to the trade sections, you'll see posts with people's names in the open, who give their OWN names

That is good way for a hacker to find out your ign one of the reason I didn't get any free ecto or shards.I never left me ign and never will post it on forum.
