Thinking about returning...
Aidel
So I first played GW way back when but stopped for several years. I got into GW2 as soon as it came out, and am loving it, but I've really been craving the story from the first game. The problem is I lost my old discs, and can't remember any of my account information.
My question then, is has there been any sign that they might be taking down the GW servers any time soon, or is it worth re-buying? I'd hate to buy it only to find that the game will be dead in a year or so...

-Anet have said that they will keep the servers up for as long as people are interested in playing. I think someone said at some point that they cost of keeping it online is very very low so it's not at all a concern.
-Losing the disks is irrelevant because they have nothing essential on them. Download the client from the official website.
-If you don't have any information whatsoever about your account it's going to be very difficult to recover, as I'm sure you've figured out. You'll almost definitely need your cd keys for proof of identity so unless you have those (which are probably in a box containing your disks...) you'll be out of luck. With regard to buying a new copy, I'd say it's definitely worth it. Obviously the community's view here will be biased but the amount of content you get for the price is incredible. The size of the community isn't what it used to be but if you organise yourself you should be able to find others that want to play through with you.

If you played a few years ago---did you take any screenshots? if you did and kept those it might help you at least remember your characters names...that plus your email (at least a major part of it) could help you remember and then ask anet (if you can get some help from them).
and recently there has been a resurgence of folks wanting to play again---a few threads have been started about people redoing prophecies and such from the beginning....so you are not alone!

Oh, I've pretty much given up recovering my old account. The only thing I can remember is one character's name. The email is one I stopped using long ago, and the info for that along with all my other account info is on a post-it inside the disc box which has vanished without a trace.
But I'm really glad to hear that gw is still going strong. Definitely makes me feel better about re-buying it all. Such a great game!

you dont need to have the email working--just know what it is, they figured out a while back that emails change...so if you have that information along with your character name you can give anet a shot (what do you have to lose?) and see if you can recover the old account (if you havent used it in a while there should be a ton of birthday gifts waiting for you too!)---and if you posted here in the past we might be able to find your old guru account.
welcome back either way!!
welcome back either way!!

if you have the original email name + the original code your pretty much guarranteed your account back (assuming anet responds to your request D

The community is (slowly) growing, find yourself a guild/alliance and you'll soon realize people still play this game how it was meant to, with others and not just bots/trading in Kamadan!

Since everyone was so helpful, I thought I'd come back to say that in stroke of luck, I found my discs and account information while doing some spring cleaning. I logged into my old account with no trouble at all, and I'm so glad to be back in Guild Wars!

(and you have a bunch of birthday gifts too I would imagine to greet you)
