Hello Guru.
As the title says, i'm looking to get back into the game. I have 1 problem though; Which class should I pick?
I'm looking to go all out DPS in general PvE with heroes. I've had a look at my past experiences plus a number of the builds posted under the different professions and came to my own conclusion that it could either be an Elementalist or a Ritualist (Spirits), but would also like your advice on which you think holds the most DPS as a profession.
Thanks in advance,
Nitch.

In addition to what you mentioned I think almost every class can run a good DPS build, except Paragon. If you really want to go pure DPS then the Monk definitely need some help from a second class. Also the necro might be a bit behind in DPS but is still fine imho.

I think it more comes down to how you want to deal damage more than the profession itself.
Anything in melee will do tons of damage (three melee professions, plus Ranger is pretty good there too and Rits have Spirit's Strength). Ranged weapon users work too, though the overall DPS tends to be lower. From a caster point of view, Ele is likely the best choice for direct damage. Necros and Mesmers have some measure of direct damage though this is usually (at least for best performance) mixed with other things like shutdown. Necros in particular tend to be more indirect, doing things like creating an army of minions or using curses to act as a multiplier for other damage sources. Rits can spirit spam, as you mention, which tends to be entirely passive though as a midline profession there's a ton of things you can do with them. Wouldn't recommend Monk DPS-wise; even though they've got smiting they don't really stand up as a pure damage option.
Remember you've got a bunch of character slots so if you're not sure go ahead and make a bunch of chars and see which you prefer. One of the best parts of GW is that you don't have to invest a lot of time into a char before you realise it doesn't work the way you wanted it to.

I agree with Marty above.
I like Ele for a caster cause I can also spirit spam with an Ele easily given the energy pool they have. So I can both nuke or spam depending on how I feel for a mission.
Also I'm an impatient spirit spammer when I do that so I'm usually right out there with my melee heroes with the spirits shielding me quite well thank you. I play a very aggressive Ele I guess. Works great for me with my heroes. Maybe not so good in a PUG but I almost never play in PUGs anymore.
In the end there is no "right" answer to these questions. I concur with Marty about creating several characters. In fact I can't imagine playing just one profession in GW. I got them all though I'm not too fond of the Paragon. But hey I bought more slots when they were on sale so have tons of spaces to use and why not be a completess on professions. Even the Para can run out and kill Fenir for some extra quick ZB loot for me.

ok, this works incredible for any class for dps:
?/w or w/?
- for great justice: broken, the pve version at least
- save yourselves: godmode
- to the limit: to keep up stance+ nice adrealine gain
- dismember: deep wound is always good, its basically 100dmg ish
- soldier's stance: insanely good for balling mobs n shit and not die from them!
- whirlwind attack: splinter weapon is insane with this
- asuran scan: so u actually dont miss when blurred/blind and can keep up save yourselves if needed (also nice dp removal if stuff not going too well)
- any skill u want as last one
All credits go to Divine Galaxa who made me try out this build years ago and it was really impressive.
Best thing is that any class performs well with it.

To stay on topic, i recommend sin for this build ,i was pretty surprised how quickly this kills

Throw in wotA, IAU and strength of honor on a smiter and you will pretty much wreck anything. You might be a bit squishy in HM though

Nobody said hes supposed to do that, just saying it makes this strategy extremely easy if someone wants to do that.
Also it would make save yourselves a waste of a spot if thats all he/she would be doing.
The build you on the other hand show is assassin only so its very limiting if diversity is what the aim is which my build has the perfect answer for unlike later build.

Again , i think your missing the point , your build would be too much focused on Maintaining SY , which we have dragon slash for(which would outdmg your build too) as wel as keeping up SY. Not hating here , just trying to understand

Because it doesn't rly matter if the warrior hits for 10 dmg more than another class since this is pve where dmg is pretty much unlimited/not as significant unlike in pvp.
Warrior also does NOT perform better, au contraire since other classes do naturally have better energy management, either through reduced cost (expertise) and/or faster energy regeneration and paragon gains some energy back from shouts which adds up significantly over time.
The extra armor warrior has is pretty much neglectable since a large portion of the dmg usually taken is mitigated through 75%block and thats up all the time, unless wild blow/wild throw/... which doesnt happen often.
Save yourselves isnt meant to be spammed, its pretty much just used when its needed so u can spam deepwounds/ aoe more instead.
Deep wound is also dmg, the number just doesnt show up since its hidden into the deepwound mechanism, if u need to spam dragon slash on enemies then your dmg output rly needs to be looked at because stuff should pretty much die in 2-3hits and this is where deep wound comes in.
He was wondering which class, he was thinking about ele or rit so this gives him the option to just pick whatever since it doesn't matter.
Anyway, back to dreamhack sweden. LIFECOACH MIRACOLI

Necro=SS/Barbs/EvaS/Necrosis/Kurizk mesmer skill/CoP(focus atleast 9 points in soul reaping+1 SR rune), plus TC builds and IV builds to do heavy damage and Ravenous Feaster can spike/DpS nice against groups(also minion mastering is easier now we have the Y panel to show minions(add MoP if MM)
Mesmer=VoR(or)E-Surge/Empathy/Mistrust/CoP/ some inspiration energy management skills(drain enchantment/power drain) 9+1 in inspration.
Warrior=Take your pick on how to play.
Rit=SoS, Glamour, DwG builds(rit has ST for Pugs n dungeons)
Ranger=Burning Arrow poison epidemic spread(great pressure), Splinter Barrage, ES pet NRA, Magebane pressure.. again take your pick as ranger, can even go dagger spammer/Scythe spammer, wth the ranger bonus +armor vs elemental damage makes it more viable in some spots then Derv or Sin
Ele=again its another take your pick, so many ways to go with an ele to do tons of damage(obsi flesh dmg tank for some harder areas in HM)
Monk=go half mes and use a signet stance out of inspiration(Mantra of inscriptions) use some domination for signets aswell, signet of judgement+2 smite signets and use "smite hex" and smite "conditon",, or you Can Arcane RoJ(will cause scatter in HM)
Derv=Vow of Strength and scythe attacks, or Vow of Silence+scythe attacks+enchantment buffs, dervs do AoE damage alot.
Sin=WotA, Flashing Blades, Critical Scythe spammer, Critical Barrage, even Shadow Form tanking when u need it.
Paragon=can DPS decent, but its more a pressure support class, then it is DPS, but being said, P/Me epidemic condition spread, makes a great pressure whch can equivalate to being on par with DPS, much like a epidemic ranger poisoned burning arrow spreader.
as some1 else suggested, make a couple classes, and see how your play style suits you.
I have all 10 classes, 4 of which have legendary Guardian, the others im slowly taking through HM, 2 of the 4 legendary guardian have master of the north, and of course, so far only 1 has legendary vanquisher, but it doesn't mean i haven't done HM dungeons, Missions, Vanquishes etc on my others.
these are not 'you have to run" bars i mentioned, there just some of the good DPS options we have.
