Hi. I recently found Guild Wars 2, and now I'm curious about the original. Is it still playable? I'm interested in the campaigns -- mostly for the lore and backstory, but in part to understand what people are talking about how things were in Guild Wars 1. It's also relatively cheap.
So, how viable is this plan, or is it a bad idea?
Is this game still playable in 2015?

The game is still playable. If you can put up with the obnoxious no-names that think they are all that, then it's still a nice game.

Anet just blocked about 3k accounts for botting and other things. Lots of angst around.
The game is playable. You should find a guild so you can get help through the harder parts. There are guides for various areas. And we are here if you have specific questions.
Enjoy the game. It 's still lots of fun. And the lore is great. Don't forget about the wiki at http://wiki.guildwars.com/

Don't know how things work in GW2, but in GW1 there are heroes and henchmen: AI followers that you can add to your team. These are sufficiently powerful to allow you to complete the content (all of it, no exceptions) without having to worry about needing to find other people to group with. Anet have been making changes to the rest of the game to ensure that GW1 functions perfectly well as a single player game if need be. They've also stated they'll keep up the servers for as long as people keep playing as the cost of doing so is negligible so there shouldn't be concern there either. If you're interested it's definitely worth jumping in.
@others: If we could avoid dragging ban drama into other threads that'd be great. Thanks.

I'd recommend joining a guild with a strong Alliance if you can. You can usually find people advertising guilds in any of the main areas of the game.
There are more players on than usual with the Canthan New Year celebration going on. The majority of the population is currently on Shing Je Island.

Yes this game is still playable, i would suggest joining a group such as the Facebook group Guild Wars: A New Hope. You will be able to find plenty of people to play with.
In many aspects Guild Wars 1 is actually BETTER than GW2, especially when it comes to gameplay. In GW1 your character is a lot more unique than in GW2, you run your own creative builds (8 skills), not what the game forces you to.
The presence of instanced areas also gives GW1 more of a classic RPG feel (FF12). no complex currency systems, easy quest system, simple crafting system. You won't be overwhelmed like in GW2.

the game is also playable cuz they dont nerf stuff anymore, which i like for pve, that they dont nerf anymore
i play in a nice guild, and its going great, even though we're kicked out of allies cuz they went full faction farm alliance.... maybe its best that way, i know what that could cause
"can anyone please help em with jokanur diggings?" "sorry, busy" x100.... or no replies at all
i'm having a nice time in a game people call dead, while i'm having enough contacts here.... not so dead after all
remember: less people = also less bad people
