Hey! From which campaing did u start from?
Most crouded outpost thesedays is kamadan city of istan, which is "main city" in nightfall, and you get there quite quick after u start the game.
Also american district is the one with ppl on it, incase youre european or asian orso..
You should go in kamadan and look for a guild that can help you out!
Also you can search these forums and check gwwiki for helpful facts!
Hope it helps!

posting at the weee hours on a weekend....not many folks are on our site at those times.
Our 'community' is a FAN BASED one--we are not part of the company that own/maintains guildwars and as such, should not be confused with them. We try to help when we can, and whether or not folks view your post and comment has nothing to do with the community INGAME.
that being said.
As Pleikki pointed out, the american districts are where you will find the most amount of players, however, as the game added the ability to basically 'play solo' there are not as many people hanging around in towns or outposts if they are playing.
I would second the suggestion to find a guild and play with them, there are still many guilds helping new players out.
And since it has not been said: welcome to guildwars!

Those that are left are either farmers/traders who can't part with their pixel collection (they don't really play the game anymore), or people who like to run many extra characters. I've known people with 5 accounts with many level 20s. Odd people...
You'll need to find a guild to have any real social contact whilst playing.

Prophecies are quite dead thesedays sadly excluding ones with daily quests orso on them
Eye of north has some living still and you can get there when uve played ur prophecies char to lions arch and lvl ~10
you should take henchs with you and play the game solo like most ppl do
enjoy the lore and graphics that still are stunning for 10year old game imho!

So you're in pre-searing (starter area)??
Pre searing is easy. Just follow the green arrow on each quest (same goes for post-searing too). I get out of pre as quick as possible, other love it and do all the quests etc
I'll be on tomorrow if you need a hand. I've had a necro in pre since 2008 still only level 1 too.

I would say that you'll get your moneys worth... eventually.
There's still a lot of people playing but most of them have already been through the stories and now play through the daily zaishen events. Every now and then as you progress through the campaigns you'll notice that occasionally an outpost will be full of people forming groups for that day.

Welcome! The game is brilliant. There is really no real point of teaming up in pre searing except for few quests and some char farming. After you leave tutorial area (maybe you did it already) you may see quite a lot of places deserted. The issue is that the game is very very big and there indeed not that many players starting it. There will be still bunch of people going through campaign on their new characters but the real crowd you will find in the end-game areas and as the people mentioned during the zaishen quests. Me myself I prefer to play it as a single player game so I rarely join groups. I am in a guild though and being in a big alliance (there are still quite a lot of them in the game) makes the game still feel quite full. So join a big guild and have fun!

Hopefully you have all three campaigns and start characters in all three. That way you get to Kamadan almost immediately in Nightfall and can join a guild.
If you are in pre-Ascalon in Prophs there are enough people in American dist to at least join a pre-Ascalon guild if not a trans-campaign guild right off. Cause joining a guild is the number one thing to do. That's how you learn the game.
Ask in Ascalon about a guild in the chat room. Say your are new and need one where people are willing to show you the ropes. Even by speaking up if you don't get into a guild right away, with patience you should meet a few people there who can show you stuff right off.
But getting to Kamadan and having a character in Nightfall campaign is the easiest access to the game and guilds ... and heroes of your own.
Pretty much everyone has multi-characters and from the very beginning. If you like have a warrior in Proph then make a caster like an Elementalist (they are the easiest casters to use at first I believe, the fire line alone they have will get you through normal mode in almost all places) in Nightfall and in Factions, well the Ritualist is very powerful and only available to "create" (they can travel to all three campaigns and eye of the north of course, in that place. Same with their Assassin which is really easy to play.
Also you can leave your in game name here and people can add you to their Friends List ("N" on your shortcut keys) and some may contact you in game as a result then you can add them to your Friends List as well. Friends in game, even if not in your guild, are just as important if not more so than the guild itself. When you add a name to your friends list if shows up clearly when you are online in the game actively playing too.
Good luck. You just bought a game, IF you have all three campaigns and Eye, that you can play for years to come. Especially with heroes that you can get in Nightfall and the North. And/or make yourself with the Heroes bonus pack, the full one. Yeah it's some money to lay out at the beginning but all three campaigns are really essential I believe and your characters can travel back and forth between them all.
It gives you years and years and YEARS of play for next to no money in the end. With no monthly fees if you get tired of it for months then return, no big deal. Best bang for the buck out there.
PS: Also do NOT forget the GW Wiki site. If you can't find the next quest then look on Wiki. Trouble with a Mission? Look on Wiki. Need a map? Look on Wiki. Where do you get max armor? Look on Wiki. How do you travel between the three campaigns and get to the Eye of the North? Look on Wiki. What builds do you need for that dungeon? Look on Wiki. That site was built and maintained by fellow players before us, no Anet, and is invaluable what they have shared regards tips and details. Don't leave home without it.
PSS: Just want to second that there are still quite a few of us out there and plenty of new people as well. The heroes pack plus heroes in game allow us to play solo a lot. Kudos to Anet for the heroes pack and allowing us to use up to 7 of them at a time (in more difficult areas) so that when the population of the game declined with age you could always still play if no matter what and who else was on or not among live players. And there are those newer and intermediate players. Keep asking in Kamadan and pre-Ascalon for help for a newer player and you will find kindred spirits to share the game with and mentors. If some jackass makes a rude comment, ignore them. There are far less of them since the population fell off and far more helpful people percentage wise.
Good luck to you. I envy you all the incredible things you will discover about this game in the years to come. It is a vast game and you can't learn it all overnight. Or even in a year of play for that matter though you will be a vet by then. But that's good. Again, more bang for your buck.

You should wait until you reach level 20 and achieve the Legendary Defender of Ascalon title to leave pre. LDoA can only be accomplished in pre sear Ascalon, stick around, farm some char, do some quest until you reach lvl 10 and then you can take a daily quest until lvl 20.

I've zero interest in titles. If I wanted titles I'd buy them. Only thing that interests me these days is a max req8 15^50 crystalline (all of which are on dead accounts now). I've always regretted selling mine to a cash buyer. Should have custo'd it like I did with all my OS req 8s.

here is the link for the wiki :
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page
it has loads of information about the game--you can check out quests, look at armors, read up about the lore, etc.
and if you cant find something, gurus will usually answer most questions (albeit maybe not at 2am on saturday morning but we will answer!)
and if you havent figured it out yet, you can make multiple characters, as well as deleting ones you decide you dont like playing, dont be afraid to try things out!

If you want an easy life then get all the campaigns and hero pack, then read up on creating heroes (basically make a pvp only char, talk to the hero registrar, delete repeat until you have 8 of them).
Skills packs are also quite useful, storage expansion and character slots.
It totals to quite a bit (probably about the same as a 'special bonus legendary edition' of a new game) but once you have those you are set for about 2-3 years of content if you play every day.
It's a huge game. I came back after 5+ years away, started a totally new account and have been having a blast.
Joining a guild is a must- I thought the game was pretty dead until I did (joined a couple duds then found Trek, a member of the no1 Kurz alliance, we own HZH), all our allies are recruiting.
American districts if you want to see people.
It's a great game that has stood the test of time, and there is always plenty to do and see.
I have wiki constantly open on another comp, there is so much needed information on there it's your best friend for this game.
Have fun and enjoy your stay.
