How many armor/weapons are there?

Are we talking a decent amount? Or are we talking a huge amount or rare weapons and armor to be found?

There are very very very many different types of items. And some that have the same name but look completely different from each other. I couldn't name each and every armour and weapon piece for every profession. I suppose I could think of most of them for ranger (but I think rangers have the least amount of items cause bows are *always* 2 handed. You can also dye your armour. And there are several types of armours that cost more and look much cooler, but aren't better stats wise (to keep balance).

Would I be correct in saying a huge part of this game is more about getting armor and weapons? Because I mean since the level cap is reached quickly, I would assume that the next big thing is getting the best/coolest armor to show off or help stats... am I right in that assumption?

yes you are for the most part. to find that perfect weapon/offhand and get all the elites is a big part on the PvE in high end. Armor isnt so much. its just collecting the pieces and gold which doesnt take to long. Some people have a few pieces of the same slot for different situations.

The option to change secondarys in the desert area's opens many hours of elite skill farming.

After you have completed your perfect character hit the PVP stuff and open up a whole new world of playing.

There also seem to be alot of items that have different names, but the same look. At least that is what i've been seeing with axes and swords. Maybe it was a bug or something, but I found a sickle, that looked like the same axe I had been using which looked like the same thing as a kythlos axe.

Anyone have an estimate as to how many items/armor there are?
