"GW vs. whatever" threads closed

I'm just curious what the purpose of these forums is. The very active thread comparing GW to WoW was locked because there happens to be a page summarizing what GW is? If the thread was addressing what GW was, and not comparing it to other games, I suppose I'd agree with that move. But um... anyhow thanks for killing an enjoyable conversation that I thought was promoting GW. How Gestapo.

Yeah, I was going to say... in the over 10 years of MMOGs I have played, I have NEVER, NEVER seen a post or thread locked that PRAISED a game that the forums were about.
LOL. Dang. First time for everything, I guess

Yes, I did post in that one. But to be fair:
Questions & Answers (89 Viewing)
Do not be scared of asking for knowledge, for it is often the only difference between the townspeople and the village idiot. Basic Questions
As opposed to:
The Riverside Inn (69 Viewing)
Gather around, discuss and attempt to remain civilized for knowledge is survival. Community Discussion
Or most likely:
Off-Topic & the Absurd (6 Viewing)
An amalgamation of the inane. Off-Topic.

You have a point there Soul Monarch. Still seemed a little drastic to just lock it without advising people to move it on over to a more relevent section. But then, I'm new to these forums and don't know how they do things. I probably won't do much more posting here though..

An Announcement that is stickied at the top of this board clearly states that if a thread is not Q&A it will be locked. It doesn't say anything about it being moved. Following the rules is a good thing and the admins should be praised for doing so instead of bad mouthed. Too many forum boards allow too many minor issues to slip through the cracks until they build up to major problems. Be thankful that the admins are on top of these issues on a daily basis.
Also, there's nothing stopping anyone from creating a similar thread in the appropriate section. If a thread such as that one was posted in the proper place and was still locked then you might have a legitimate grievance.

Well, barring the fact that it was in the Q&A forum, I have a matter of policy to not allow WoW vs GW posts. They almost always end up degenerating, and at the face of it, who cares about WoW vs GW? Each does their own thing - it is very possible to have both coexist.

The thread comparing GW to WoW was locked because such threads lead only to trouble. All it takes is one pro-WoW fanatic (or EQ or Diablo or any other game you might compare to guild wars) and one pro-GW fanatic and you have a messy flame war on your hands no matter how benign or harmless the original intentions of the thread were. GW is GW, WoW is WoW, they're both good games in their own way, we haven't established these forums to prove the superiority of one game or another and, as a GW fansite, it's pretty much assumed that the majority of people here have a positive impression of the game. We're not out to create or perpetuate any such sort of rivalry, we're here to discuss Guild Wars.
As for the purpose of the Q&A forum, it's a living FAQ - specifically for in-game questions and issues, technical and out of game issues go elsewhere as does anything plot or story related to prevent spoilage. People ask a question, they hope for an answer. It's not a place where much, if any, discussion should be taking place. Instead it's a resource that people in need of answers can turn to and one that's a lot more flexible and rapid - if perhaps a bit less authoritative - than any static FAQ pages we could throw up and maintain.

Those kinds of threads are also utterly pointless. Back before there was a GWG, I made a thread over on The Guild Hall lampooning the silliness of all such threads. You can probably still look it up over there. The title of the thread was "GW vs. Microsoft Flight Simulator".

I just have a quick question. I've posted a number of threads on this forum and two or three of them were closed by the moderator after only a few replies. Why? I want to hear people's different opinions. I'd like to give my thread some time and see if anyone who hasn't found my thread might find it and decide to leave a reply. But with it closed after only a few responses, I then have to reopen it and start over. What's funny is one of my threads which has been out there for a very long time and nobody has responded to is still open. It's meaningless and i can't delete it but the moderator hasn't closed it. I just don't get it. Why close the good threads where people are actually responding a lot? I was getting some really good feedback and now it's closed. Anyway, just trying to understand the inconvenience.

i only see the wow thread closed and that issue has been done to death

If a thread you start gets closed, and you start it back up, you're just asking to get the tread closed.

I just merged the thread you created asking about your closed thread with this thread. Read the messages that come before yours in this thread for an explanation of why that thread was closed.
