How do you know what mod overwrites which other mod?

How do you know what the upgrade/modification you're trying to add to your weapon is gonna overwrite WHICH upgrade/modification because it doesn't tell you what one it's overwriting?

Weapon prefix and suffix upgrades.

Swords:
prefix = hilts
suffix = pommels

Axe:
prefix = hafts
suffix = grips

Hammer:
prefix = hafts
suffix = grips

(edit: forgot bows) Bows:
prefix = Strings
suffix = grips

staves:
prefix = staff heads
suffix = staff wrappings

I thought you got a message saying are you sure you want to replace such and such mod? but then again i havent played in 3 months so i could be wrong.

Also, the wording is ADJECTIVE weapon of NOUN, ADJECTIVE mod, and mod of NOUN.

That's a big clue too.
