I would post this in the above thread but it was long derailed into some off-topic spam.

--------------------

Works like this:

Someone is trying to sell a rare, without much success (repeatedly advertising on the trade channel for several minutes).
The scammer begins negotiating with the trader for a price on the item, and tries to draw the negotiation as long as possible. When the trader is at the limit of patience the scammer agrees to the deal.
Next when the trade window is open the scammer waits for the goods to be submitted, usualy several items so that the total will be a multiplication of the agreed price. The scammer quickly picks and enters a number that looks similar to the total, but significantly lower then it. The trader accepts the deal.

I lost about 100g that way, which was probably a mistake and not a scam, and was alerted to the possibility. Then as I traded there were several occasions when someone tried to pull this trick. The main sign that someone might try this is when you notice that the person is trying to delay the deal, to keep you waiting.
It sounds simple but when unexpected it will work.

A month from now and 100g is going to not be worth picking up off the ground. I know it seems like a lot when you're starting out, but it's going to be zippo shortly. So know that even if you were scammed, the scammer got away with nothing of any real worth.

True, my experience was with an insignificant 100g. However further attempts were for much higher amounts.

If your selling something worth multiple platinum, then this scam can be quite damaging.

P.S. Actualy I'm wrong. Should have posted it on the sticky anyway. Oh well.

London - but Munich was much better

If you were "repeatedly advertising on the trade channel for several minutes" then there is at least one person that is glad you were scamed.

People who get scammed should have their complaining priveleges provoked. Actually I think we should start a thread about "People who are easily tricked and don't pay attention". There are no cheats with trading, pay attention.....well there used to be, but it's fixed....it was a funny one heh

Oh, you mean the dye remover/red dye trick?

I've had people attempt to scam me a few times, accidentally from misreading something they put, and someone tried to pay me less for something, which was about 250g less than we agreed on, I caught it though. It was when money was needed, right after post searing.

I always pay attention, but sometimes people get scammed by not knowing they've just sold something off for alot cheaper than they could have sold it for.

Example: Pre-searing, I've seen people selling dyes for 50g a piece, then there are those that are from post-searing on second characters that are trying to sell them to people in pre-searing for 1000g, which I find funny, since that much gold is hard to come by in pre-searing, it took about seven levels and alot of selling to get that much for me, and it was for my armor in post.

They changed the graphic of the dye remover btw So that shouldn't be an issue.

Relax there buddy, not all traders overspam the chats. There are some decent people out there who advertise quite carefully.

Yes, the person who gets scammed like should blame himself at least in part. You have to be careful and take your time checking the numbers.

But this simple type of scam - agreeing to one amount and trying to pay another - is very common.

I suspect most of the people who do this are simply so immoral they don't even realize they are commiting a crime.
However, I believe some do this with intent and improve their success rate significantly by perfecting their technique. They figure out the right hours to go hunting, and ways to recognize a ripe mark.

The best way to avoid this is just to avoid trading when tired.

I was listening to this radio show where this man was describing various real life scams and how to avoid them. Then a few days ago he told a story on how he was scammed that same day on the way to the show...

This was a very common occurance back in D2. This also included the cancel several times while saying "Oops, my invntory is full!" They proceed to their bank to unload/load up on your item, then show the item you want, cancel saying again "Hold on a sec" or something to that nature. Their goal is to aggravate you into not thinking straight and accepting the trade as fast as possible without checking the trade. So remember for your protection: always check the trade for being 100% like what you agreed to.

Hmmm...funny some idiot tried this scam on me last night. THey asked to see a Gold item I was selling, then asked the price. I told them what I was asking and they entered a number wayyyy lower. I saw it though and cancelled, thought they were just stupid as hell. Sounds like this is a common thing people do though...Lamers!!
